When seven-year-old Dave Lowell was camped out at his father’s mine in the hills of southern Arizona in 1935, he knew he had found his calling. “Life couldn’t get any better than this,” he recalls. “I didn’t know what science was, but wisps of scientific thought were already working into my plan.” So began the legendary career of the engineer, geologist, explorer, and international businessman whose life is recounted in his own words in this captivating book.
An Arizona native with family roots in territorial times, Lowell grew from modest beginnings on a ranch near Nogales to become a major world figure in the fields of minerals, mining, and economic geology. He has personally discovered more copper than anyone in history and has developed multibillion-dollar gold and copper mines that have changed the economies of nations. And although he has consulted for corporations in the field of mining, he has largely operated as an independent agent and explorer, the architect of his own path and success.
His life’s story unfolds in four stages: his early education in his field, on-the-job learning at sites in the United States and Mexico, development of exploration strategies, and finally, the launch of his own enterprises and companies. Recurring themes in Lowell’s life include the strict personal, ethical, and tactical policies he requires of his colleagues; his devotion to his family; and his distaste for being away from the field in a corporate office, even to this day. How a keen Intellect created enormous wealth for the world, while overcoming physical danger and bureaucratic obstacles.

J. David Lowell is a hero directly out of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, but in real life. This little promoted book is an inspirational account of a life built on the American dream, a questioning and active mind, physical courage and achievement that enriched the entire world. The book is a true life adventure novel. It was hard to put down. I read longer into the night than I should have.
It was impossible for me to read the book without a sense of sorrow for the freedoms that the United States has lost over the lifetime of the author. David was born in 1928. As a child, he recalled his father buying dynamite at the local hardware store, and loading it into their truck. Safety was assured by keeping the blasting caps on the side of the truck away from the dynamite. You could legally buy explosives over the counter in Arizona into the 1990's.
Crossing the border with firearms was not a huge problem. David and his new wife transported firearms down to Mexico without a hitch or question. While guns are not a central theme in the book, it is clear that they have often been an everyday working tool for David Lowell. Hunting was his primary recreation at his first job as a mining engineer in Mexico. He was a member of his college rifle team, and later in life, he shot a marauding mountain lion with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver.
The central thesis in the book is how David Lowell created great wealth for the world with his mind and courage. He was able to understand and, importantly, act, on the information that he perceived, to convert useless rock into enormous wealth. He became wealthy in the process, but his wealth was a tiny fraction of the wealth that he created for the world. Make no mistake, in spite of David Lowell characterising himself as a "Treasure Finder", he created the wealth. It was his knowledge, ability, drive, and organization that turned useless rock into valuable ore and metal to keep our industrial civilization going.
What were David's primary enemies? Ignorance, stupidity, corruption, fraud, and irrational bureaucracy. Physical danger, while significant, was a smaller obstacle to overcome. Fortunately for the world, David's several brushes with death were near misses.
Disclaimer: I have a degree in mining engineering, was on my college pistol team, worked in a military bureaucracy for 30 years, and own a couple of mining properties.

Bury this mine

No doubt Mr. Lowell is a courageous hardworking professional and probably one of a kind, but this book was really lame. Unless you are a miner or geologist you are not going to understand anything in this book. I guess the book was not really written for the general public. I would have liked to have seen a glossary of mining terms and procedures for reference. Also, descriptions of various minerals and their use. About the only thing I learned is that mining business is cutthroat and it's hard to find a profitable mine. The book is littered with stories of his adventures and you get tired of reading about all the times his jeep got stuck in mud. The worst part is the text. It's as if every paragraph could have been a new chapter. He starts telling a story and you go to next paragraph thinking he will tell you what happen but now he is in a different country discussing something totally different. Did anyone actually edit this writing? I would love to sit down with him one day and interview him on the procedures and techniques for discovering mines and making them profitable because I sure didn't learn any of that from reading this book.

Fun book full of great application of intellectual fortitude and straight-on courage.

Great book that recounts the life and times of a great geologist and explorationist. The story is fun, the trials and travails impressive, and the spirit of "well, let's do it" that made America what it is today was really refreshing and invigorating.
