Great start to a new series!

This book is a great start to a new series. I loved most of Scarlett's Uncovering You series and was excited to see that she had come out with a new dark romance! While Alastair doesn't seem quite as twisted as Jeremy so far, this book definitely has the strong, sexy Dom, non-traditional relationship, and suspense that leaves you wanting more. Looking forward to the release of the next installment in the series!

Unsure of what to write

I don't think I will be going any further with the series. A college student was hired to catalog antiquities for three months--summer. She finds herself being preyed on by the owner of the castle. He has no plans for her to catalog a thing. Acts like she's strange for telling him the job she was hired for. I guess it's cheaper for him to have a submissive this way for three months than hire one. The girl doesn't even seem interested and it ends with him striking her for the third time the hardest. I say go home, girl. So not 50 shades of sexy.

I always take my time writing a review for this talented author..Why? Well..here you go. After I read her first book, ever. I promised my self not to buy any books from her anymore because, I read to scape real life, to life's I will never have, boyfriends I will never meet, life styles I will never enjoy, and I am fine with that, my books provide me with what I need an deeply enjoy. And even tho, I get affected by her writing style, I am also very intrigue, and keep coming back to suffer along with the main character. A vicious circle, indeed.

Interesting Book for Javascript Visualization Beginners

RaphaelJS is a visualization framework written in Javascript. In my quest to do browser based visualizations, I decided to try this book which I got as part of the Oreilly Reader Review Program.

The key selling point for this framework is the fact even IE6 can use it. The lack of cross browser woes would be reason enough to stick with this framework.

This book assumes some prior experience in Javascript. The author gives a brief introduction to Raphael and dives straight in.

What I like about the way Chris Wilson (the author) structures this book the way he slowly builds you up to more advanced RaphaelJS usage. He starts with the basics and always wraps up the chapter with a 'Case Study' where whatever you learnt is put to use. His case studies are actually pretty fun, with the examples being more 'real-world'. They actually give you the idea that your imagination's the limit and encourage you to think beyond 'HTML & CSS' when it comes to in browser visualizations.

He also ends the book with discussions on best practices and creating Javascript applications with RaphaelJS.

I enjoyed this book, especially trying out the visualizations at the end of each chapter.

This isn't a bad introduction to RaphaelJS; and quite frankly there just aren't many books on this framework so it's not like there are any better options. The shame though is that there are so many mistakes in the code. If you know your JavaScript already you should be able to debug the examples and get things working, but if you are new to JavaScript then you should take a pass on this one as there are far too many code mistakes.

This is a great, concise introduction to the topic. I got this book when I started to investigate translation/localization of my technical product content, and this book allowed me to have much more productive meetings with localization contractors. I knew what to look for in a localization contractor, what to avoid, and what goals we'd be pursuing.

I wish I had this book when I worked on translation projects. Seriously, I do. I made a lot of mistakes, and those could have been avoided. Val's book covers everything we need to know, along with those sneaky gotchas that can cause much pain and grief once we've jumped into the process unaware. She writes about how to prepare content for translation, how to choose a translation vendor, what to do if we can't use a translation vendor, how translation memory works, tips on selecting translation tools, how to work with content teams on global projects, and much more. This book is an investment and will save a lot of money in the long run on translation projects.

Great time passer

i found this book very interesting actually. i didnt look at the whole thing because there was so much stuff (some abberviations i would have rather not known). i dont really know how i came across this book, but i am glad i found it beacause this was a very interesting read. its really great if your bored and dont have much to do so you feel like reading it off! :)

Gr 3–6—Alton Ziegler is crazy about maps. He particularly loves the way they can visually display any manner of information in a variety of ways. Surreptitiously, he collects data and creats humorous maps detailing such trivia as the popularity of lunchroom tables (depicted as a topographical map of the cafeteria) or a weather map of a teacher's clothes. Striped tie today? Look out—the probability of a pop quiz is high. He never meant for anyone to see his collection, but when it's "mapnapped," there's no telling where the road might lead. Keith Nobbs is perfectly cast as the narrator. He creates a pensive Alton that fits the mood of the story. Clements's (In Harm's Way) use of subjective third-person narration is interesting in that the listener is privy to the inner concerns not only of Alton but of his teacher Miss Wheeling as well. Rarely is a teacher's perspective presented with such honesty and clarity in a middle grade novel. Though Nobbs's voice sometimes cracks when portraying female characters, his delivery, nonetheless, is still pleasing and believable. observations though mapmaking. With a good heart but few friends, he’s used to being a loner. After

losing a packet of maps that might make trouble for him at school, Alton finds an unexpected ally in his

quest to find them again. Meanwhile, he resolves to square himself with the people whose traits are

represented on the missing maps. In the process, he learns the power of an honest apology. The book gets

off to a slow start, partly because events initially unfold from a teacher’s point of view and partly because

Clements tends to “tell” rather than “show” in many passages. The narrative becomes more involving

when Alton takes center stage, and the mystery plot thickens. Were the maps lost or stolen? Who is the

blackmailer? Though some will find the story’s ending unsatisfying, Alton is an appealing character in an

My 7 year old daughter and I loved this story

My 7 year old daughter and I loved this story. The main character is a boy of considerable character who (SPOILER ALERT) solves his challenge courageously through honesty and sincere apologizing. I think this is a great book for imparting values. Alton is a very likable, gentle boy, but he isn't perfect (tells some lies, thinks and writes some meanish things about others). He is, however, very self-aware and self-correcting, which is perhaps unrealistic but at least relatable to our childrens' "best selves." We learned so much about maps and incidentals along the way, which is a bonus.
Not a purchase; we borrowed it.

Maps, Maps, Hundreds of Maps!

Alton loves maps. His bedroom is wallpapered with them! He loves drawing them, too, but his own maps are different than road maps. He drew a map of his teacher's brain by noticing how often she talked about dogs, or the metric system, or her little brother, or vacations. He mapped the popularity of various brands of athletic shoes among his classmates, and he made a smell-map of the school: where you would find each of 29 different smells in the building. He made a popularity map of lunch room seating, and dozens more maps, and he kept them all secret, because he did not want to make people mad when they see how much he watched them. Then someone stole his secret folder where he kept his maps, and is making demands that Alton knows will get him in trouble. How can he get his maps back?

Although not many kids love maps and charts, they all can relate to noticing how often someone says "um," or how many days in a row a teacher wears the same tie. They might not make a mountains-to-plains chart of the tallest and shortest kids in the class, but they do notice them. And they all will be curious about how Alton can extricate himself from an embarrassing situation.

Another great story from the popular middle-grade author of Frindle and No Talking. Ages 8-12.

A Great Book For Any Clements Fan

This is a great, original book that will surely make any fan of Clements absorbed for ages. This book is set in the view of Alton Ziegler, A fifth grader with an obsession for maps. He makes his own maps, but some show information besides location. They contain personal and even embarrasing information about other people, like a map that showed the inside of one of his teacher's brain, which was largely allocated to Golden Retrievers. But when someone steals these maps and starts sending him blackmail orders that say "Do it or your maps go public", it's up to him to get them back from the mapnapper before it's to late.

Outstanding intro to Object Pascal/Delphi

Although I got a free electronic version from Embarcadero, I still purchased a bound copy. This is a great and up-to-date introduction to Delphi/Object Pascal that can still teach a few things even to the more experienced users. If you Master this book's contents, followed by Chris Rolliston's Delphi XE2 Foundations (an incredibly well conceived book), you will be well on your way to maximize your productivity with Delphi. Further complementary reading could be Nick Hodge's Coding in Delphi and More Coding in Delphi books.

It's what should have come from Embarcadero

Delphi 5 came with a 1 1/2" thick Developer's Guide. Later versions came only with a help file. This book is what should come with each version of Delphi - a easily readable definition of the language. There are a few shortcomings, however. One, it is full of grammatical errors - very poor editing. Second, it does not clearly specify what versions of Object Pascal it applies to. But there are very few other options available. Why is there no manual from Embarcadero Technologies?

Extensive coverage, good depth

These days, we see only a few books published on Object Pascal (Delphi), though it remains my favorite language tool. This volume brings together old material from Marco's earlier books on Delphi, and adds good coverage of more recent features in the language. The lack of downloadable source code is increasingly a disappointment, and detracts from the value of the book, which clearly was written to use the source code as a complement. Topics discussed are of less value when in some cases, the context of usage is missing.

This book introduces the principles of remote sensing from an Earth resource perspective. It describes a) the fundamental characteristics of electromagnetic radiation and how the energy interacts with Earth materials such as vegetation, water, soil and rock, b) how the energy reflected or emitted from these materials is recorded using a variety of remote sensing instruments (e.g., cameras, multispectral scanners, hyperspectral instruments, RADAR), and c) how we can extract fundamental biophysical or land use/land cover information from the remote sensor data. The history of remote sensing, the principles of visual photo-interpretation, and photogrammetry are also presented. This book is a companion to "Introductory Digital Image Processing: A Remote Sensing Perspective" (Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1996) which introduces the fundamentals of digital image analysis. It is ideal for undergraduate or graduate courses in airphoto interpretation and remote sensing.

Best overall coverage of the topic I've found

This text found its way into my collection during my undergraduate career as required for a Geography course in remote sensing. I ejoyed it as an introduction to the topic but later found myself returning to it time and again in graduate school working on a remote sensing thesis. I keep on finding new reasons to open it up in my business, at Terra Prints. It's exhaustive while not exhausting. Worth buying.

excellent!

This book covers broad area of remote sensing; nature, physics, photogrametry, history, various types of sensors (multispectral, thermal, Microwabe..), earth resource perspective(vegetation, water, urban landscape, soil&mineral...). So if you want to learn how remote sesning are employed in this world, I strongly recommend to buy this book. if you want to learn digital image processing, you should buy the sister book "Introductory Digital Image Processing: remote sensing perspective".
All sections (especially vegetation) contains alot of infomation and easy to understand with nice figures and pictures.
Only one fault of this book is this price...

Cutting edge, but needs work

This text book is extraordinarily detailed, and provides not only the concepts, but the theory and nuance for beginning in remote sensing. While studying this book, in detail, I have run into the following complaints, though:

1) The glossary and index are so incomplete, they're desolate. Important and conceptual terms that are used are not in either - it makes using the book quite difficult.

2) There is WAY too much minutia - the text is very informative, but I've found that the explanations of most things are excessively verbose.

3) Remote sensing is a very visual field.... and this book doesn't utilize diagrams and images nearly as much as it could/should. I realize that generating diagrams is time-consuming, but it would help this book immensely.

4) Chapter summaries and concept-based questions at the end of the chapters would probably help students a lot, too (perhaps even teachers).

5) There's not nearly enough talk about which EM bands see what, and what they help with. That's the entire basis of remote sensing, and it isn't explored in the detail that it could be.

So, while I recommend this text, because it is one-of-a-kind, I do so with the warning that it is obviously not a fine-tuned text yet.

Bolotin is president and partner of The History Band, where he is involved in book publishing, museum consulting and selling american historical objects. He has written award winning books on the Civil War and developed the Young readers' History of the Civil War series. He has been working with historical artifacts and other collectibles for over three decades.

very interesting

I found this book quite fascinating. I have been reading Erik Larson's wonderful "The Devil in the White City" but since that comes with virtually no illustrations, I bought this book primarily for the photographs, of which it has a great many and which go a long way to conveying just how huge this fair was (there were 735,000+ visitors on the day that had the highest attendance rate).

It also fills in information Larson's book lacks about the exhibits themselves, the individual state and country buildings and the Midway as well as statistics on how much food was served every day and how many bathrooms were available plus it shows pictures of the moving sidewalk that took visitors who arrived by boat to the fair itself; the Xerxes telescope; many displays and decorations made out of corn and oranges; the foreigners who were part of the Midway attractions; the Wooded Island; the first automated paint sprayer (with which a crew of three was able to paint the interior of the entire Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building in only six weeks); a lifesize statue of a wooly mammoth, then thought to have been the largest animal to have ever walked the earth; and several pictures of the Ferris Wheel under construction. It also has a table showing what attractions were available and how much they cost and one indicating which architect designed which building (something Larson's readers will appreciate).

The only real problem I had with the book (and the reason for four stars instead of five) is that it's printed on regular paper stock and not on glossy paper so the photographs are somewhat blurry and grainy and not as crisp as they would have been had the publisher used different paper. Also the book provides a copy of the map of the fairgrounds given by Montgomery Ward to it's customers but this map is too small plus it's printed so that part of it lies in the book's center crease. I think it would have been better if the publisher had had a map drawn and used that or had found one that provided more information. There is a three dimensional map of the Exposition available on the Web -- it would have been nice if something like that had been included as well since it's impossible to get a comprehensive, birdseye view of the Fair (nevermind one in relation to Chicago and the surrounding community) from just the photographs. There is also a bibliography and a somewhat incomplete index. I don't know how this book compares to other pictorial books on the Exposition but it was fine for what I needed and had lots of bits of interesting trivia besides.

The White City revisited

I purchased this book after watching a two hour PBS special on the Columbian Exposition. My imagination was captured, and I wanted more. I purchased the excellent The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson (which I also recommend) and this book at the same time. They compliment one another quite well. I believe I enjoyed both more by pairing them than I would have enjoyed them individually.

The photos contained in this book are astounding. Even living near Chicago, and having been to the location of the Midway Plaisance and having seen the few architectural remnants of the fair (most notably the Science and Industry Museum), it is hard to imagine the scale and overall aesthetic of so many Greco-Roman buildings in one place. The book was very useful for making the fair come alive in my imagination, and for giving a general sense of scale.

As an aside, if you ever visit Chicago, take the time to visit the location of the fair. You can take a walking tour of the area, and begin to create your own internal map of where the buildings stood. Finish up at the Museum of Science and Industry (which remarkably doesn't have an exhibit on the fair, one of the most important events in Chicago's history!) You will not be disappointed.

Devil in the Details

Our book club reviewed Devil in the White City about the Chicago World's Fair, and our leader brought this book to show us pictures of the locations and scenes mentioned. I was especially impressed by the pictures of the Ferris Wheel. This book was indispensible for background, setting the scene and adding flavor to the book we reviewed. I thought it did a thorough, informative job in depicting the Fair, and enriched our reading of Devil in the White City.
