Insightful, well-researched, actionable ideas on personal communications

Tame The Primitive Brain is an insightful book with lots of actionable ideas.

I read Mark Bowden's previous 2 books, and this one is my favorite. The content is extremely well researched. He goes into a great deal of detail on brain science, and how the brain influences our physical communications. And at the end of each chapter he shares a short coaching tip to apply the ideas into real life.

This book functions well as a personal coaching and leadership book. Mark has taken his expertise of body language and public speaking, and applied it to day-to-day communications. It's a really neat angle, and one I hadn't considered before.

The structure is accessible, and works well as a reference guide. I've found myself looking up specific chapters after the fact as I come across relevant situations at work. This is definitely a book I'll keep around, and refer to regularly.

Solid advice for managing emotional situations based on science and reason

I've already learned and applied strategies from this book and I'm only 3 chapters in. Money well-spent.

The author bases his content on neuroscience and the evolutionary development of the human brain. If you don't believe in evolution you're likely to disagree with much of Bowden's reasoning, you'd be stupid to ignore his advice. Our behaviors are informed by the unconscious workings of the 'primitive brain' (also known as the reptilian brain - hence the lizard on the cover.) By understanding what's going on in your brain, you can better deal with your impulsive behaviors (and those of the people around you.)

I love the way that the author has organized the content. The book is organized into 28 content chapters - one-a-day for four weeks (plus introductory and wrap-up chapters.) You could read the book front to back or jump around to the topics that most interest you. I suspect that I'll read it front to back, then return to the "days" (as mentioned in the subtitle "28 Ways in 28 Days to Manage the Most Impulsive Behaviors at Work") that offer me the best ideas, or even flip it open to a random page and read that day's ideas.

Great reference guide for understanding and handling impulses (by you and others!)

Each year I always end up finding one or two key books that have the most impact on the way that I think, act or say. It's great to find not just a book that fits that criteria so early in the year, but I know it is one I am going to be picking up and again and again, referring to on a regular basis.

Biology was never one of my strong subjects, my teacher even had me labelled as an idiot - perhaps that was his primitive brain talking! So when I started to read this book my fear was this was going to be too science based, I started to come out in cold sweats again, just like cramming for an exam.
Almost immediately Mark Bowden puts the reader at ease. You do not just realise that deep down we all react in the same predictable ways when it comes to our reptilian brains, but also that there is nothing wrong, it's just good to be aware of the impact.

The book breaks down in to punchy, workable chapters, looking to tame one reaction or impulse. There is always an example or story to kick off, followed by clear explanations and suggested actions, circling back to the story and highlighting how things changed or might have been different.

Mark uses an excellent balance of neuro-science, humour and practical solutions that will appeal to a wide range of readers. This ensures that the message gets heard, appreciated and acted upon.

Perhaps not immediately evident that this is a book about your personal brand. But once you have clearly identified what your personal brand is and who needs to know about it, then you have to get on with living and communicating that brand.

As Mark writes in his Introduction "Anyone who works with other people - which is pretty much everyone - has to deal with all kinds of challenges involving human nature. Chances are that at work one of your biggest challenges is handling the most basic behaviors of people - such as impulsive decision making, tunnel vision, and resistance to change. And that's just you!"

Being more conscious and proactive with your personal brand means stepping outside of your comfort zone on occasion, something the primitive brain is trying to avoid at all costs. That is why this book is going to prove so useful to you. As you try new things and do not get the results or reaction you expected you can dip in to the book to understand why, and then take a suggested approach or action.

The overall concept I found able to quickly to grasp, no biology cold sweats, and the actions fairly easy to initially implement. Because the default for the reptilian brain is to go back to several hundred million years ago I can see the challenge for most of us will be to stick to new approaches.
With many books these days there are additional resources to access and what might be useful in this case would be a quick glance reference guide, perhaps even in pocket style format.

The relationships you have at work are critical to getting your own work done, projects completed and ultimately your longer term success, so this book will prove to be a useful, constant reference guide. For leaders in particular I can see this being invaluable.
The bonus is that while the book is focused on work situations this is obviously equally applicable in all other relationships too.

The reptile brain is the most basic part of our brain. Because this subject on the surface appears so simple there is a danger that people do not see this as remarkable. That would be a shame. We do not have to complicate or over think things to have them make us more effective or successful.
I would recommend a read through of the book in logical order first time and then after that you can refer back as needed to handle specific situations.

I like Marks relaxed style, (the English humour helps!) he is constantly using personal and real life work and client examples to get his points across. With the short, yet informative and practical chapter make up it easily gets that one key point for the day across. This makes for easy reference and pick up again stickiness. Each 7 chapters focus on one area and are collected in to weeks, week 1 focuses on You, week 2 Relationships, week 3 Tribe and week 4 the New You. Unless you are Mark, I am not sure it will ever be ingrained so it's certainly one you will want to keep on the bookshelf next to your desk!

A compelling, relatable and hilarious novel with substance, drama and intrigue

Scared Scriptless is a compelling, relatable and hilarious novel about what life is like behind the camera for a closet hopeless romantic that loves quoting movies. Sweeney’s novel is a girly romance type of book, but with real substance, drama and intrigue.

Maddy’s character is a Type A individual that’s surprisingly down-to-earth, from her annoyance with LA traffic to her perpetually messy knot of hair and avoidance of high heels and too much makeup. Her job as a Script Supervisor on The Wrong Doctor perfectly utilizes her compulsive attention to detail and need for organization. I connected with her being a self-professed ‘list person’ and I love that she uses actual notebooks, rather than just an iPad or laptop. “I feel energized by the organizational tools-there’s nothing a girl can’t do armed with Post-its, markers, and a fresh notebook.”

Maddy underestimates her own talents and abilities and holds herself back from the job that she really wants. “There are the creatives and there are the worker bees. I’m a worker bee and that’s fine. I love my job; it’s what I want.” She claims that she’s not creative, but she’s always itching to be in charge and would be an amazing producer, if she just got out of her own way. Everyone around her knows that she can do anything she sets her mind to, if only she would stop being her own worst critic. I loved the notion of not second-guessing yourself and the importance of believing in yourself.

Her “Never trust the actors” mindset influences her control at work in keeping meticulous, detailed notes and serves her well in her professional life. However, it also extends to her number one rule of no dating actors. When a gorgeous new actor comes into her life, will she be able to avoid his attention and ignore her own attraction to him? To ultimately be successful, Maddy must determine what she wants out of her personal and professional life and realizes that sometimes it’s difficult to keep those two lives separate.

“”Living in the present?” I think about how much time I spend mentally making lists of all the things I need to do and remember to do in the future…I should try living in the moment, I think. And then can’t help but laugh at the thought…”I wouldn’t last five minutes without trying to plan something.”” Can Maddy learn to let go a little bit, open herself to the possibility of falling in love, and loosen the reigns on sticking to the script?

Another fun behind-the-scenes-in-Hollywood novel by Ali Sweeney!

Ali Sweeney has really taken to writing like a fish to water it would seem. I absolutely loved this 2nd novel! In a very fun twist, she's introduced completely new characters and opened up a whole new world to explore, while also bringing back two lovable characters from her first novel, The Star Attraction -- which is great because people who read the first book get a little extra insider feeling, but people who haven't read the first book yet won't feel like they're missing anything.

The novel revolves around a few months in the life of Maddy Carson -- script supervisor for a major, primetime drama. The first few chapters have a little bit of a slow, but educational, start as we learn all about the different jobs on set - who's who and what they do. Some other reviewers felt like this was too much, but I have to say I really liked learning all the ins and outs of show production. Later in the story, Maddy works on developing a new show concept and pitching it to the network execs - again, I thought all the Hollywood insider bits were fascinating. It's a lot to cover to make sure that readers aren't lost by the industry jargon - and I think it was better to cover it all rather than leave any readers confused. So I give a thumbs up to that where others might just find it tedious.

Other than the behind-the-scenes tidbits, you've got this completely relatable main character, Maddy. She's detail-oriented and ultra-organized. She's from a small town but totally settled (at least physically) in Hollywood now - so you get to see both of these worlds and how they mix (or don't mix). You've got the personal journey that she goes on throughout the novel. And you've got the romances - which I won't say anything about so as not to spoil anything! Oh, and there's a genuine, feel-good family side story too - loved that!

I found myself wishing that this had been a much longer book because I sort of thought it ended too soon - so many more moments that could have been written about. Not that it ended abruptly, just that I had come to know these characters and wished I could stay in their world a little longer. Perhaps in book #3...

Oh - and any Days of Our Lives or Ali Sweeney fans will love the little Easter eggs she throws in - just for fun!

Engaging feel good read.

Alison Sweeney offers the reader a fly on the wall look at the nuts & bolts of Hollywood through the eyes of employee Maddy Rose Carson as she goes about her daily work on a popular TV show as a script supervisor. How Maddy navigates the pitfulls & positives of her work & personal life. The author has interweaved a system of support for Maddy to draw on.

Maddy gets to meet Sophie Atwater a publicist through her work colleague / friend Billy Fox both from The Star Attraction and Adam Devine a new character.

The novel has a genuine feel good vibe about standing up for what you believe even if it leaves you a little shaken. Rule driven by nature Maddy learns that you never now what’s waiting for you around the corner.

Maddy the main character deals with the pressures associated with bringing her ideas to fruition, actor fan reaction, those that will do anything just to get noticed, trusting your self in matters of the heart, being true & respectful to your family & friends.

Scared Scriptless is an engaging feel good read that has the reader experience many emotions and leaves you smiling with delight as you turn the last page.

I've heard it said that finishing a good book is like leaving a good friend. I look forward to revisiting these characters in Alison's next novel.

In his latest book, investigative journalist and anthropologist Carney (A Death on Diamond Mountain: A True Story of Obsession, Madness, and the Path to Enlightenment, 2015, etc.) expands on his 2014 Playboy piece, “The Iceman Cometh,” in which he profiled Dutch fitness guru Wim Hof and experienced Hof’s strenuous training methods, some of which involve exposing the near-naked body to snow and icy water. At first skeptical, Carney became convinced by the changes he experienced in his own body. The narrative is filled with personal details that will engage, astonish, and even repel readers. Expanding on his unnerving close-up account, the author also examines the research being done on the role of brown adipose tissue in the body and a variety of military and sports medicine training practices. He cites the anecdotal evidence of people who have placed their faith in Hof and are convinced that his techniques have changed, if not saved, their lives―e.g., sufferers of Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. As a climax to his account, Carney describes how, stripped to the waist, he accompanied Hof on a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. In the epilogue, the author asserts that his experiences showed him that “exposure to cold helps reconfigure the cardiovascular system, combat autoimmune malfunctions, and is a pretty darned good method to simply lose weight.” Hof provides the book’s foreword.

Scott Carney is an investigative journalist and anthropologist whose stories blend narrative non-fiction with ethnography. His reporting has taken him to some of the most dangerous and unlikely corners of the world. The New York Times says "Carney writes with considerable narrative verve, slamming home the misery of what he has witnessed with passion and visceral detail." He has been a contributing editor at Wired and his work also appears in Mother Jones, Foreign Policy, Playboy, Details, Discover, Outside, and Fast Company. He lives in Denver, CO.

Ground Breaking Research into the Limits of Human Endurance with Practical Applications

I really enjoyed the way that this book combined leading-edge research in exercise physiology with a gripping narrative about probing the boundaries of human suffering and endurance. Unlike most journalists today, Scott Carney approached his story from an objective standpoint and was actually brave enough to experiment with Wim Hof's techniques on himself. The author has a nice, tight writing style and took the time to actually engage in some research that runs beyond a typical Google search While some of the activities described are quite dangerous, those items are appropriately red-flagged. I'm actually trying some of the breathing and cold exposure exercises myself, although the thought of cold showers and standing in the snow makes me shiver.

Cold as Ice

Oh man, this book.

It made me want to climb Mt. Everest, strip down to my skivvies, and let out a primal scream proclaiming my dominance over my own physiology.

Granted, I haven't done that, but I did sign up for my first ultramarathon feeling significantly more confident than I did before reading the book.

Cryo chambers might be the cool, new thing for recovery, but some recent research has shown that good ol' fashioned ice baths work just as well if not better for reducing inflammatory responses after a workout. Wim Hof may just be on to something with his breathing techniques and winter warrior ideas. Scott Carney and the other converts that he meets throughout the book are engaging and they made me wonder where I might be able to find a pool that I could use to train like Laird Hamilton. I take cold showers after I go on a run because of this book, and it's winter in Chicago right now. I won't say that I believe 100% of what wound up in the book, but Carney is a perfect foil for Hof and he weaves a convincing tale. The writing was entertaining as hell, too, so I'll give this book a solid two thumbs up.

Fantastic book!

The three pillars of health – diet, exercise, and environmental training.

For at least half a century the conventional wisdom about maintaining good physical health has rested on the twin pillars of diet and exercise. While those are no doubt vital, there’s an equally important, but completely ignored, third pillar – environmental training.

If you're interested in health, read this book.
