A favorite book for my kids when they were young, I am now buying a copy for my grand-daughter. The illustrations are literally out of this world, the storyline is a simple mystery, enhanced by the sense of wonder evoked by the interesting visual perspectives. If you wish to encourage imagination and comprehension, this book is a good pick. The picture accompanying this item does NOT do justice to those within the book.

Don't bother with this book

Just like everyone mentioned, this book started out well, and I had great expectations. I also had many questions and most of them remained unanswered for me (well at least not to my satisfaction). Also, the way Nikos left Sophie 4 years ago and his reasons sounded so fickle. To be honest, the book became really depressing! I wish i read the reviews fisrt.

too much monologue

The whole premise of this book seemed well thought out. Nikos running into Sophie who appears to be a hired escort. What happened to her? Where was her rich father? What happened to her piano playing career? How could she have fallen so far down from when he had known her four years ago? These are all great questions and it would have been nicer to have these answered with more dialogue between Nikos and Sophie and less introspection on the character's behalf. These characters do a lot of flashback but I didn't get to see them fall in love. I was told that they were in love and Sophie in her innocence had set Nikos up to be her knight in shining armor, a role he clearly didn't want to be! If there had been more interaction/dialogue between the characters this book would have been better off. All the flashbacks and mental meanderings detracted from the story itself.

Good start, but it fizzles

I bought this after reading the first chapter online. I thought Nikos and Sophie had great chemistry and I enjoyed the beginning of the story. But, as I got to the middle, it felt like the conflict between them was too large for them to overcome (and when they do, it feels stilted). Another thing about the conflict (he left her four years ago, and broke her heart) is that we don't find out what happened, exactly, or why, until almost the end. Once I found out what the conflict was, I was disappointed in the reason why Nikos left Sophie. Accepting what the author offers as the reason why this hero would leave his true love after their first time together made me think less of him. I felt too much time was spent on flowery dialogue and not enough on developing the characters.

Following an introduction, the book goes on to discuss the methodology, before treating synthetic and industrial applications. Figures, tables and schemes provide useful aids to help the reader understand the chemistry behind this important reaction.
A must-have for organic, natural products and catalytic chemists, as well as those working in industry, or for lectures in chemistry.

About the Author
Junzo Otera was born in Hyogo, Japan in 1943. He obtained his PhD degree in 1971 from Osaka University, and then became a research chemist in Central Research Laboratories of Juraray Co. In 1979, he moved to Okayama University of Science as Associate Professor and has been Full Professor there since 1986. In the meantime, he served as a visiting professor in many universities in Japan, USA, France, Spain and Australia. his research interests are focused on Lewis acid catalysts, heteroatom chemistry, fluorous chemistry, and green process chemistry.

Joji Nishikido received his M.Sc. from Kyushu University in 1970 and joined Asahi Chemical Industrial Co., Ltd. in the same year. He moved to The Noguchi Institute in 1997 and returned to Asahi Kasei Corporation as chief chemist in 2004. His research interests are in the area of synthetic organic chemistry, Lewis acid catalysts, and green chemistry.

There is room for improvement

The only book exclusively on the subject, it has room for significant improvement.

1. The very first reaction scheme is entirely wrong.
2. The description could get messy at times due to material organization
3. It is good some real experimental procedures are available for ready adoption
4. Some compilations of esterification are nice: in natural products and flavors etc
5. Coverage of new technology in esterification seems too brief, same for new trends.
6. Key issues of esterification is catalyt, either chemical or enzymatic - these are covered heavily and nicely
7. Chiral resolution is strong in the book, the industrial aspect weak.

Overall it is a quite useful book for practitioners in chemical industry.

Good book, the quality is weak though

I loved the content of this book but the cover of it is a bad material. After a semester of use the cover was thrashed and I made sure to keep the book in good condition so I could resell it. If given the option to get this as a hard cover go for it!

Prior to this (1991-6), he was full Professor and head of School of Information Systems at the Queensland University of Technology (QUR) in Brisbane, Australia. he also held senior academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of Koblenz, Germany, Fern Universitaet Hagen, Germany, and was principal research scientist at the National German research centre for Computer Science (GMD) in St. Augustin from 1983-9.

Papazoglou serves on several international committees and on the editorial board of nine international scientific journals and is co-editor in charge of the MIT book series on Information Systems. He has chaired numerous well-known international scientific conferences in Computer Science. These include the International Conference on data Engineering (ICDE), International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS), International Conference on Digital Libraries (ICDL), International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS), International Conference on Entity/Relationship Modelling and others. He is the founder of the International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS) and more recently of the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC).

Papazoglou has authored or edited 15 books and approximately 150 scientific journal articles and refereed conference papers. His research was/is funded by the European commission, the Australian Research council, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and Departments of Science and Technology in Europe and Australia. He is a golden core member and a distinguished visitor of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Science section.

Pieter M. Ribbers holds the chair of Information Management at Tilburg University, The Netherlands, where he also is head of the Department of Information Systems and Management . From 1991 till 1994 he held a position as affiliated Professor Information Management at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His interests span management of information technology (in particular question related to alignment and information economics), inter-organizational Systems (in particular electronic commerce), and the strategic and organization consequences of the use of information technology. He is active as researcher, lecturer and consultant. he has supervised more than 20 PhD theses and has contributed articles in this field to national and international professional journals and has (co)authored several books. He is active at international conferences in information systems (ECIS, HICSS, ICIS) and is a member of the editorial board of Information and Management - The International Journal of Information Systems Applications. He has also participated in research programs of the European Commission. As a consultant he has worked with companies such as Brunel, Nolan, Norton & Co., and ING Group especially in outsourcing, scenario development and information economics.

Out of date and poorly written.

I purchased this book only because it was a required text book for my Business Information Systems course. This book is probably the worst book I've used in all of my bachelors program. I agree with the other negative reviews completely. I'm very interested in the subject but this book is worse than "reading a dictionary" as another reviewer commented. It's like reading a phone book; specifically the white pages. It's outdated by today's e-business standards and uses almost zero real-world examples. The few case studies presented are terrible and very general.

It can provide some theory to get your mind headed in the right direction but that's only if you can stay awake past the first two pages. I'd recommend getting a book that has been more recently published and uses some recent practical examples to help the reader apply the knowledge.

Also, the section on the product page that says "Editorial Review" is incorrect. The review describes the details of a different book and does not summarize key points you will learn from this e-Business book. It's a mistake that Amazon has not yet caught.

Very good academic work but...

If you are new to e-business don't start with this book. The book present a very good investigation and strong academic work in general. The issue I have with it is that it's not practical and not written in a way that helps to understand and learn the concepts; it's like reading a dictionary or specifications documents. The case study material is minimun and no actual implementations are covered.
I guess it makes great reference material for someone who is developing/modifying e-Business tools.

Not worth the money and time

The books is not worth the money and time required to read it. Some valuable information is there, but in general - buying it was a big mistake.
