About the Author

John White is teacher of Film, English and Media at Parkside Community College and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. He is co-author of AS Film Studies: The Essential Introduction, A2 Film Studies: The Essential Introduction, and co-editor of Fifty Key British Films, also published by Routledge.

Sabine Haenni teaches Film and American Studies at Cornell University. She is the author of The Immigrant Scene: Ethnic Amusements in New York 1880-1920 and has published widely on popular theatre, early cinema and realist fiction.

A Great Collection

This is a cliche, but this book will be useful to both an amateur approaching film studies and to film experts. The essays are so varied and rely on so many different critical modalities that a sweeping survey of both the history of American cinema and the plethora of approaches to film is created. It is pretty astounding how intricately some of the writers in this anthology approach their respective films. The essays on Psycho, Chinatown, Aliens, Casablanca, and Se7en are just a few that stand out as wonderful. The best part about this work is that it shows what really good film criticism looks like, which is an engagement with even the most minor points of the film's composition in relation to certain hermeneutics. Paradoxically, the critics write with such an assured sense of conviction that one can easily enter into a dialog with any essay and explore problems of methodology, critical framework, or the writer's basic understanding of the movie in question. I think this is a very good thing. Negotiating with writers that we assume to have authoritative voices is how criticism progresses. For example, I'm very intrigued by the posits of the Aliens essay, but I can also think of ways where the author's logic can be brought into question. Rather than negating the value of the essay, a dialectic is made. For first-time film students, acknowledging that these essays, though extremely provocative and well-written, can be questioned will allow a fledgling film critic to engage in a discourse with a critical approach to a work--helping the student find their own voice and learn how to both read and use critical sources.

Also, the book is to be admired simply because it disregards the trite pop-criticism that is spewed all over the web from critics who only approach a film from a singular, subjective approach of what a "good" film should be. There are many films that, while not classics (whatever the hell that means), that can be considered extremely important for a number of other reasons. I think this book subtly dismisses the popular criticism in order to create truly intriguing works about a wide variety of film, and that said films should not be limited to an exploration of one perspective.

Not up-to-date and spotty information

This short book of 45 pages begins with the F-16A Block 01 model in 1979. The latest model mentioned is the F-16 C/D Block 50/52 (delivered in late 1991). The cutaway drawing is the F-16C version. Specifications are spotty.

Some why and how questions are answered, such as why a lightweight fighter, why the wing choice and other innovations such as the canopy and pilot’s seat. The most interesting part of the book is the F-16’s combat capabilities (how well the F-16 flies) and front line operations (reliability and performance in real combat) by the Israeli and Pakistani air forces. Published in 1990, this book does not include the Iraq and Afghanistan combat assessments.

It's taken me a long time to read a book by Laurie Halse Anderson....but she's definitely going on the must-read list.

In Wintergirls, Anderson does what gives me toe-curls when I'm reading fiction-- an arresting, fascinating unreliable narrator who gives you entryway into what its like to experience the world outside of the "norm."

Lia's best friend, Cassie, died alone in a hotel and now Lia's parents are tip-toeing around her, checking up on how much she eats, and forcing her to go to therapy sessions early.

Lia plays the dutiful daughter, but Cassie's ghost is haunting her, taunting her about how much she eats. Soon Lia is nuking food in the microwave so the kitchen will smell, but burying the food so her parents won't know she isn't eating.

She's painfully aware of the calories in even a tablespoon of cream cheese, and only feels in control when her weight gets closer and closer to her ideal of 95.0 pounds or she's letting loose all the bad feelings and hateful words through slicing her own flesh with razor blades.

Wintergirls is written in Lia's inner monologue, crossed out words and all she won't even let herself think (she crosses out "mom" and substitutes "Dr. Marrigan" instead). It's a disjointed, haunting view of seeing the world through a self-hate lens, and Lia's voice will stay with you long after you put the book down. I was fascinated by the ring of truth behind Lia's strategies to fool her parents and also the voices of the other girls online.

Probably not a book you'd want younger YA readers to attempt without some talk about anorexia, and self-destruction beforehand. Probably not a path you'd want to walk down if you're feeling emotionally vulnerable, either, as Lia's pain and that of her family is real and un-tempered.

The Personality of a Wintergirl

This is a great book on a tough topic. The selfish, paranoid, chemically imbalanced, unfathomable and miserable voice of someone struggling through an eating disorder comes through loud and clear. LHA once again demonstrates she is an excellent writer. The only issue I have with the story, and perhaps it is a substantial one, is the relationship between the two girls – if they made that pact, they knew they needed each other, even if they had been distant. Cassie called 33 times and Lia mentally registered most of the calls. The friends since grade school had already both been to rehab over the eating disorders. They must have known a lot about what the other must be going through. Why didn’t Lia answer the phone? Or even listen to a message? It seems to me that struggling with an eating disorder is a terribly lonely/interior condition and the self-loathing is much bigger than disgust or ill-will towards almost everyone else around you. So I didn’t quite get on board with this one important fact because I believe a real, rather than fictional Lia, would have picked up.

I lost major points with this purchase because when I received it the top corner of the cover and many of the front pages were already bent over from shipping.

As far as the book goes, it's great. It can be triggering, but includes a very good plot line. As far as the ending, it kind of rushes and some parts of the book or the character's thoughts. Many parts also didn't get explained later on, and this book touches many disorders with just one character. Not only is the character anorexic, but has psychotic issues, bulimia, depression, and minor entirety. While the book is overall good, I also think it can be triggering and confusing.

Author: Hunkin, Galumalemana Afeleti;
Galumalemana Afeleti Hunkin was born in Fale‘ula, Western Samoa, in 1945. He became the foundation tutor of Samoan language and culture at the Pacific Islanders’ Educational Resource Centre, Auckland, in 1977. Four years later he was appointed director of the Wellington Multicultural Educational Resource Centre. He is now a senior lecturer in Samoan studies at Victoria University.

Audio samples & Flashcards available

The audio samples are available for free on the University of Hawaii Press website.
Just search for gagana on their site and it will show you legitimate and free links to mp3 and realaudio recordings.

If you are going to learn this stuff you have to do the exercises. Recommend doing them on paper, not by typing them into a computer. You will learn faster that way.

As additional aids to study:

Flashcardexchange has online flashcards for this book. You can either review them on the web, or there is an iPhone app called Mental Case that will let you download the flashcards. Flashcardexchange also appears to have flashcards for the Samoan Word book that is also available on Amazon. Even though Mental Case can support audio samples in flash cards unfortunately none of the Flashcardexchange cards have them.

Also search on google for two documents:

To gain more experience learning from native speakers I recommend tuning into local radio stations that stream over the Internet.

Another newer dictionary is: Tusi`upu S'moa by Papa'li`i Dr Semisi Ma`ia`i. This is printed by Little Island Press and can be ordered directly from them (also from New Zealand).

Last but not least there is also an iPhone app which is very helpful now that the bugs have been fixed.

CD not included

The book has a lot of good information but the CD or CDs were not included with the purchase. I have tried several times and several different ways to find the CD that is supposed to accompany the book but have not been able to find it. The chapters have a CD symbol by the sections that offer CD assistance with pronunciation which would make a huge difference in the effectiveness of the book but without the CD it is impossible to know if you are pronouncing the words correctly which defeats the purpose of trying to learn the language. The Samoan language has several words that are spelled the same but the way the word is spoken is what determines its meaning...without the CD it's hard to learn how to use them in the proper context.

I lived in Samoa for two years as a missionary teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. There is learned how to speak the Samoan language. This was over ten years ago, and I have since forgotten quite a bit.

This book is perfect for refreshing and learning the Samoan language. It has lots of examples and vocabulary you can practice. I am remembering so much. This is a Great Book!

About the Author
Leanne Simpson is a researcher, writer, and educator of Mississauga and Scottish ancestry. She is a member of the gidigaa bzhiw dodem and a citizen of the Nishnaabeg nation. Leanne holds a PhD from the University of Manitoba and is the past director of Indigenous Environmental Studies at Trent University. Her research interests include Indigenist theory and methodology, Indigenous political cultures and traditional governance, Nishnaabeg women, Indigenous Knowledge, and Indigenous philosophies on land and the environment. Leanne currently teaches at the Centre for World Indigenous Knowledgeat Athabasca University and has previously taught at Trent University, the University of Victoria, the University of Manitoba, and Tampere University in Finland.
