This book is packed with ideas on how to cut grocery bill costs by smart shopping (using co-ops, buying in bulk, clipping coupons) and smart cooking (making your own instead of using convenience foods). About one third of the book is devoted to recipes that emphasize inexpensive but nutritious ingredients; others are simple recipes to replace packaged foods. Also included is a sample shopping list and recipes to feed a family of four for $30 a week (which is less than half the cost of the thrifty plan recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture). The book is low in meat and emphasizes bread products and bean dishes, but it does demonstrate how a family can "eat cheap." In addition, it offers chapters on gardening and canning, eating out, and cooking for dieting and eating problems. Edwards, a social worker, has drawn upon her own personal experiences of shopping and cooking. Her ideas are not new, but this book will inspire many to consider ways to stretch the food budget.

In the economy we have today this book is full of good useful information. A good book to give as a wedding present or a graduation present to those just starting out in life. Down to Earth. love it.

Worth the Purchase and the Library Space

This book is well written, and no I didn't agree with everything she said, however 90% of the book was very useful. You can't knock her for suggesting a smaller pet...as an owner of an English Mastiff I know that she is dead on right. While that is not an option for us, it may be for someone else, so why clobber her over the head for telling the truth? I have read MANY money saving books over the last 20 yrs and was doubtful I would read anything new...but was pleasantly surprised. Overall, it is definitely worth reading if you are SERIOUS about looking for ways to cut back on your food budget.

Not worth shelf space in a library!

No question in my mind why this book is no longer in print! One of the repeated themes in this book is to not shop with your children because they will just whine and beg you to buy all of the snack foods they see on TV. The author then goes on to say that for an entire summer they utilized only kerosene light as they watched TV to save money on their electric bill. DUH! TURN OFF THE TV! There is also a fascinating segment toward the back of the book on how to prepare "shrubs" which can replace the cost of alcohol in your budget. ??? I was waiting for her to tell me how to build the still! Full of sarcastic humor...brownie recipes that contain 3 cups of flour and 5 cups of sugar....save the money you would have spent on this book and apply it to your grocery bill!

About the Author
John Kiriakou is a former CIA officer, former senior investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and former counterterrorism consultant for ABC News. He was responsible for the capture in Pakistan in 2002 of Abu Zubaydah, then believed to be the third-ranking official in al-Qaeda. In 2007, Kiriakou blew the whistle on the CIA’s torture program, telling ABC News that the CIA tortured prisoners, that torture was official U.S. government policy, and that the policy had been approved by then-President George W. Bush. He became the sixth whistleblower indicted by the Obama administration under the Espionage Act ― a law designed to punish spies. He served 23 months in prison as a result of the revelation.

In 2012, Kiriakou was honored with the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage, an award given to individuals who “advance truth and justice despite the personal risk it creates,” and by the inclusion of his portrait in artist Robert Shetterly’s series Americans Who Tell the Truth, which features notable truth-tellers throughout American history. He won the PEN Center USA’s prestigious First Amendment Award in 2015, the first Blueprint International Whistleblowing Prize for Bravery and Integrity in the Public Interest in 2016, and the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence, also in 2016.

Kiriakou is the author of The Reluctant Spy: My Secret Life in the CIA’s War on Terror and The Convenient Terrorist: Abu Zubaydah and the Weird Wonderland of America’s Secret Wars.

Very helpful for interpreting Kolbe profiles

As a high fact finder AND quick start I had difficulty making sense of my Kolbe profile, as they're seemingly opposites. The explanations in this book are very helpful, and astonishingly accurate.

Quite surprised this book isn't more well known given how many hundreds of thousands of people have done Kolbe profiles.

A great resource for furthering your own understanding of the Kolbe Index.

Excellent book for those familiar with the Kolbe "A" Index. Clear and concise explanations to help the reader understand, not only their own index results, but also understand the results of others. With Striving Zones, Kathy helps remove some of the confusion of what it means to have a particular score in the Action Modes.

Instead of the using the word "Resistance", later changed to "Prevent", in the results (which can bring about a negative perception to a person who is not familiar with the Kolbe index), Kathy explains her use of the new terms "Act", "ReAct" and "CounterAct". A CounterAction more fully (and positively) describes how a person makes a contribution in a particular Action Mode where they score in the CounterAct range.

It is also a great resource for describing CoActions - where a person leads with two strong Action Modes. When an entire team has taken the Kolbe Index, this book helps further describe how to help each team member contribute at their highest level.

From the great covered arcades of the 19th century to the museum displays of grand department stores to air-conditioned suburban malls, the book examines the ecology and life cycles of retail space the world over. Latest Design Accessory for the Bubble Economy

For a volume that purports to be scholarly research from Harvard University, it incorporates preciously little hard facts or empirical data from the commercial retail industry, aside from the colorful graphics, it represents, at best, an amateurish take on a global economy in the form of bumper stickers rather than any form of serious analysis.
Mr. Koolhaas' customary "Firehose" approach to editing - massive amount of unedited images and unaccredited charts and information featuring slogans sufficiently amorphous as to allow readers to draw whatever conclusion they want. Harvard GSD (Graduate School of Design) students would tell you that the whole book is a somewhat cynical exercise for Mr. Koolhaas to use his academic assistants to produce "research" that attempted to justify intellectually what he was designing for the Prada stores in NY, LA, etc. (a "cash cow" for Koolhaas' architectural firm according to his chief assistant) But since Koolhaas is an established and bankable star, none of the participants are complaining. In the end, most of the essays managed to emphasize an approach to architecture that happened to coincide with projects by Mr. Koolhaas.
For example, while the essay "Depato" give a reasonably detail account of the development of Japanese department stores in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, but then it focused on design features such as the "Bunkamura" or cultural village, art galleries and roof gardens that some stores had added in order to attract customers to shore up declining business. (Koolhaas advocated adding lecture hall in Prada stores but was vetoed for taking up too much valuable retail space). The essay never examined, let alone proposed solutions to, the real cause behind the decline of department store sales - the rise of discount shopping during the decade-long economic recession).
"Captive-Airmall" amiably speculates on the pros and cons of spaces designed for efficiency and what it meant to operate in an highly impersonal environment. However, it failed to mention the real reason that gave rise to such environment - airline de-regulation that began in the United States which eventually turned airports into corporations responsible for generating their own revenues and thus jump-started the airport retail business.
Much like a fashion product by Prada, this book is very useful if you want to brag about how intellectually curious and, at the same time, up-to-the-minute-Wallpaper-hip you are at home or the office - it's the latest design accessory for the 1990s bubble economy. It is disappointing to see that even a respectable institution such as Harvard has succumbed to the forces of the marketplace.

The language of retail

I'll start with the bad first: this book is too long, the essays are of uneven quality, and the layout is poor (if you are trying to read it, that is, and not just look at it). That being said, I think the overall product is excellent. This authors do not seek to answer questions but, instead, to raise them. Why is retail facing a crisis? How will advances in IT affect retail? What is changing about how we buy, what we buy, and why we buy?
The authors' premise is that shopping is a living entity, one with survival on its mind. Retail, they claim, has evolved as other beings have evolved: Some advances are foreseen while others come through chance, but all advances are in response to external forces. In the case of retail, the dominant relationship is between the shop and the shopper. As the shopper changes, so must the shop evolve, write the authors.
That this work is not a completed whole, but rather a piece where some assembly is required by the reader, is important in making this book work. The authors do not and cannot answer all their questions. The idea of "ulterior motives" - which teases at the implications of increased use of IT in retail and urban planning - is, to me, the central issue. The authors note the shift from "how does spacial design affect people" to "how does information design affect people". They note the importance of this shift for the future of shopping and present a history of retail as the vocabulary for which readers can begin to discuss these questions.
Because the authors have taken on the task of teaching the language of retail, readers may feel as if they are back in grade school English class - slogging through page after page of seemingly useless information that is not neccessarily connected to the next bit of information. However, if you spend some time playing with this information - looking at each bit of knowledge as building blocks that can be moved about and repositioned next to other bits of knowledge to uncover new and different patterns - this book comes alive.

The Retail Experience in 800 pages

If you work in retail management or are just curious (like me) about why and where folk shop, invest in this 800-page visual extravaganza. The key to survival with "Shopping" is page 27, where the contents are, and I suggest you turn over the page corner so you can find it easily. The rest of the book is text mixed up with a kaleidoscope of color photos, charts, maps, text panels, black pages, and color photos with white copy, etc, etc. The pace never slows down! Actually, it is not as bad as that because each of the 45 chapters starts on a spread and the right-hand page is always bright yellow with black type.
Naturally, the text covers all the big subjects, like Victor Gruen versus Jon Jerde (these are the guys you can blame/praise for all those malls) and everything else to do with shopping past, present, and into the future. I found very intriquing a chapter called Replascape, about companies that make artificial trees and shrubs for your local mall--and to keep up the pretense, in some locations, they are watered regularly. A large part of the book focuses on the U.S., but the rest of the developed world is not ignored. Shop till you drop in Europe, Japan, South America, Asia....
I would have liked an index in a book this size, but I still think the publishers should be proud that they have produced such an amazing book at a very affordable price.

About the Author
In addition to his work on elasticity, Augustus Edward Hough Love (1863–1940) studied wave propagation and was awarded the prestigious Adams Prize in 1911 for his development of a mathematical model of surface waves known as Love waves.

A very complete book on elasticity...

Though the original print goes back as far as 1927, the foundations of the theory of linear elasticity aren't changed so this book is still up to date.
Though this book is an introduction text, as it devellops the theory from the very basics, it covers a wide range of applications that are hard to find elsewhere. For example, the equations of Hertz for contact stresses are develloped, the elasticity of a gravitating rotating sphere(earth), torsional deflextion of thin beams in bending and shell- and plate theory. This all in considarable detail.
The style of writing is not oldfashioned at all and is easy to read. Not as easy is the amount of math and time you have to invest to really understand this book. It's does not use tensor represantations but still demands a ready knowledge of advanced calcus (determinants, multivariable calcus, line-integrals, etc.)
It's text only and has no exercices, it's a very enjoyable and rewarding book. It even has a brief chapter on the development of the theory through the centuries.

Beware the hardcover version!

[[VIDEOID:mo2EB6SS0104UR2]]I bought the hardcover version of "A treatise on the mathematical theory of elasticity", assuming it would be the same as the paperback version, but it isn't!

It actually is a Volume II of, apparently, the first edition (1893). The most "recent" edition is the fourth edition (1927), first printed in America in 1944.

I asked the Customer Support if there was a Volume I, but they said that this hardcover version announced is the only one they have. So Amazon is selling the hardcover version as it had the same contents of the paperback edition, but that isn't true!

Just to be clear:
The hardcover version is a reprint of Volume II of the FIRST edition.
The paperback version is a reprint of the 1944 edition, which itself is the FOURTH edition of the book. This edition is a unique volume edition.

As you can see in the video (sorry for the lousy English and mistakes), it starts from chapter XIII (13), and there is a page in which you can read "Volume II". However, nothing is said neither in the cover of the book, nor in Amazon's description.

The saddest part is that it doesn't worth returning it, as I would have to pay the "return postage costs", which can be more expensive than the refund itself, as I don't live in the USA.

absolute bible in elasticity, every professor who teach elasticity would list it among the reference books. But you have to invest much time to understand it.

Book was really good. i read it in 3 days

Book was really good. i read it in 3 days; i loved it. many plots and twist i wanted more you can almost envision the characters. the only downfall about the book was when he revealed Pharaoh and the story behind it, i dint care for it too much. (i will not give it away). i wish he would do a spin off book because i would like know what happened when face got out of jail and what happened to Omega and whats gonna happen to with persia and the football player. what happened to monk. all and all the book was very good

I loved the first 2 books in this series but this 3rd one has my mind blown! This book was EVERYTHING!!!! The gang's all back and I hope not for the last time. In this installment revelations are made... Lines are crossed... And nothing will EVER be the same. Strap up and take the journey with them... I promise you won't regret it.
