Worst textbook I have ever been subjected to

First let me say that if you are in a nursing program that uses this textbook, I realize you don't have a choice in the matter and as such, book reviews are of limited utility. That said, I have to be honest and say that this text book is simply horrible. I survived my pediatric nursing course and got a good grade, but it was in spite of this torturous textbook, which I am pleased to now be able to say I will never have to look at again.

Yes, the textbook contains a tremendous wealth of accurate, raw information. But that's the problem also. It's RAW. The organization of the text is terrible, finding the relevant critical info you actually need is nearly impossible, and it is pure torture to try to read. The authors do not appear to understand the concepts of summarization, highlighting, and organization. Virtually every page is a monolithic wall of seemingly randomized, excessively verbose, dry text.

If you have to use this textbook, try to get as much as you can out of your lectures and whatever other learning materials are offered by your professors, because this text is mostly useless.

As a BSN student I really enjoy learning. I have done well in every class up until now and I believe that the text has a lot to do with it. Although I must admit that I have never been excited about pediatric nursing this book makes it even more difficult for me to get through the class. I have never felt like I have wasted so much time in my life reading a textbook. We are assigned a tremendous amount of reading material from this book and I know why, because for the amount of words that the author uses to get their point across very little is actually said and a lot of it seems to be opinion based. I am sorry but a lot of this book is common sense, "don't leave boiling water in a place where a toddler can reach..." The repetitiveness is what really gets to me though. In the nursing program as many of you know, time is critical and should not be wasted, yet the authors of this book feel it is necessary to repeat the same information and most of it is what I call "fluff." "When a toddler goes to the bathroom on their own make sure to provide emotional support..." They never tell you what emotional support means, but at least it sounds good, and to me is common sense. This seems like I may be splitting hairs here but this is only one of numerous examples that is evident throughout this book. The valuable information in this book is so diluted and I get so frustrated with the amount of reading necessary to get so little information. Although this book is a VERY comprehensive book and may be good as reference material, it does not seem to be written with students in mind. If you are an instructor looking for a valuable text that you want your students to benefit from I would look elsewhere.

Fantastic book for pediatric nurses!

This book is amazing. It was a required textbook for nursing school and one of the only books I ended up keeping after graduation. I refer to it all the time and find myself reading the whole chapter just because of how interesting the subject matter is and how well the book is written. If you are in your pediatric clinical rotation or if you have any interest in pediatric nursing I highly recommend this book!

Invaluable if you take your art seriously

I have been studying martial arts for over 30years and this book has shared some valuable information on breaking down our traditional techniques and developing real world training scenarios that have real value. Some of the information is confirmed by my own experience and the writers obviously have shared some of the same experiences and this gives confidence that the information provided has been tested under strict examination.
Discussion's on Evidence based martial arts increase the awareness of your training and force you to evaluate the technique for its true worth. Data provided is clear and well laid out and the graphical representations help to further reinforce the points that are being discussed.
If you train in the Martial Arts and want to develop your training and if you teach then you owe it to yourself and your students to read the information contained within this book.

You might think you know... but you have no idea!

I have Practiced Martial arts for around thirty years. I have been teaching for about 15 years. This book drastically changed my perspective. I now teach and train in a whole different manner. This book gives great statistics which makes several of the " best technique" arguments moot. I highly recommend this book to any serious budo practitioner, and would strongly advise any contemporary martial artist to read it... it may just change how you view your art.

Valuable and complete content, but there is place to improvement

I have been practicing Shito-ryu Karate since I was a child 7 years old, and as a black belt 2nd degree my knowledge on techniques, kata and kumite is extense. Nevertheless, I have been strugling for some years now trying to understand the applicability and suitability of these knowledge in real modern street fighting. With this book I saw the opportinity of finding answers and I did not need a second thought for purchasing it.

It contains lots of data on fighting statistics, history and evolution of martial arts, physiological and psicological aspects in fighting scenarios, explores thoroughly the medical outcomes resulting from the typical streetfighting techniques and finishes with a evidence-based reinterpretation of some kata bunkai. At the very end a curriculum of the knowledge needed for each belt rank based on traditional karata and street injury data is provided.

All the information and data in this book is of extreme value and usefulness and it has helped me to answer some of my doubts, and I would encouragely recomend this book for any karate practitioner. Nevertheless, I have missed a more extensive description (with photographs perhaps) of specific street-fight-oriented karate applications. In other words, explain more deeply and show with pictures or graphs what has been nicely summarized in the curricula examples.

Simple recipies, very funny stories.

This is a very short and simple book. But when it comes to cooking fish it is better to keep it simple and short anyway. So the recipes in this book are all winners.

In between the recipies are some smatterings of writing and some drawings. They are even better than the recipies. This book is perfect for short quick reads, so it ended up in the toilet (but not in a bad way).

M. David Egan, Hon. AIA, is a consultant in acoustics and Professor Emeritus at the College of Architecture, Clemson University. He has been principal consultant of Egan Acoustics in Anderson, South Carolina for more than 35 years. A graduate of Lafayette College (B.S.) and MIT (M.S.), Professor Egan also has taught at Tulane University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Washington University. He is the author of Concepts in Architectural Acoustics, Concepts in Thermal Comfort, Concepts in Building Firesafety, and Concepts in Architectural Lighting (two editions). In addition to consulting, teaching, and writing, Professor Egan is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, member of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, and an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished Professor.

I'm a architecture student and I think this book is like a bible of acoustics in architecture. It brings detailed info for designing places with good acoustic performance whit various technics and for the most different type of places like a simple residential to auditoriums and concert rooms. I have other acoustics books (like William Cavanaugh's) and they always make mention to David Egan's book. If you're in search on books about architectural acoustics, I think that must be the first one to buy. It's a must have in any architect biblioteque.

Since first encountering Egan's text a little more than 20 years ago, I've continued to return to it for solid information. Complex material is presented in a way that allows me to apply it to unique conditions at hand. Some of the world-class acoustics consultants with which we've had the privilege to work rely on Egan to help communicate complex ideas. Without compromising too much real technical nuance, the ideas are so clearly communicated that I was able to offer the book to members of a church in eastern Europe working to improve the condition of their worship space.

Niall Ferguson - The killer "apps" or cultural arrogance; you decide.,

While I suspect that David Starkey would violently object the two current giants of television history in the UK in terms of providing a worldview are the left leaning Simon Schama and the combative neo conservative Niall Ferguson. Their dust up at last years Hay Literary festival in Wales was a colourful sparring session between two big intellects firing verbal potshots at each other and a joy to behold. Schama concentrated on providing a robust defense of Barack Obama while Ferguson spent much of his allotted time dissing the President's now famous speech delivered in Cairo in 2009. Indeed he has described it as "touchy feely nonsense" and has in recent weeks sent out lurid warnings about Obama's failure to anticipate the demise of Mubarak and to come to terms with what Ferguson sees as the potential rise of the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt and the possible "restoration of the caliphate and the strict application of Sharia". Strong stuff, but Ferguson does like a good row. (see his feud with the nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman)

These themes above are the heart of this new book "Civilization: The West and the Rest" since Ferguson comes from the controversial standpoint that Western dominance has on the whole been a progressive force and that on the basis of a cost benefit analysis the good outweighs the bad (it is a constant theme in all his books). He recently argued that "the rulers of western Africa prior to the European empires were not running some kind of scout camp. They were engaged in the slave trade. They showed zero sign of developing the country's economic resources....and the counterfactual idea that somehow the indigenous rulers would have been more successful in economic development doesn't have any credibility at all." This is a bold, confrontational, contentious and provocative thesis and his new book reinforces these arguments postulating that there were six killer "apps" which propelled the West to a position of predominance. These were competition, science, property, modern science, consumption and work ethic all with a dedicated chapter in the book.

Space precludes a detailed debate on each theme but for example he contrasts how China was the world's most advanced civilization in the 15th century but stagnated and was overtaken by Dutch mercantilism and the rise of capitalism employing his six "skills". He will equally generate a furious response to the view that scientific development was "by any scientific measure, wholly European". Other ideas that the spread of the market was as influential in the rise of the West as the role of force tends to neglect that the often were inseparable and rather evil twins. Just look at the bloody history of German East Africa prior to the First World War, But even more close to home Ferguson has himself previously recognized in another part of his prodigious output that "When imperial authority was challenged - in India in 1857, in Jamaica in 1831 and 1865, in South Africa in 1899 - the British response was brutal".

That said all Ferguson books, whether you love or hate his arguments, are immensely readable and his historical sweep is vast. There is little doubt that he relishes the big strategic themes and his tone is one of super confidence and often compulsively provocative not least in his view that the West must relearn some of its old tricks to maintain its position. His ability however to take a small example and write it large often leads to accusations of research selectivity and the fact that the successful Chinese business city Wenzou also has 1,400 churches is used to tie some of his "apps" together in what is a very unconvincing argument. The title for this narrative is oddly lifted from another very recent book by the conservative philosopher Roger Scruton albeit the latters theme was Islamic terrorism. Similarly other historians such as Ian Morris, Eric Ringmar and John A Hall have covered these issues with much more subtlety and nuance. Yet Ferguson's strengths are his readability, populism and his headlong assault on some sacred cows. His weaknesses are the employment of the sweeping generalization and a strong streak of cultural arrogance. You can clap loudly or boo vehemently at Niall Ferguson when the television series to accompany this book commences on US television.

Hits the Niall on the head! Pun intended.

Wow, what an amazing, exciting and insightful historical analysis of how we all got here! By "here," I mean to say, at Amazon, browsing books on line, reading the reviews of anonymous readers with wildly divergent opinions!

Before I write anything, remember this: Comparative Culture is, by definition, based on human opinion, and its study can be polarizing and emotionally sensitive. This book will get your back up, one way or the other.

There are many detailed reviews already written on this controversial volume, so I'll just cut RIGHT to the chase: If you're a conservative American (or European, for that matter), and you think we are "by God, the strongest country on earth, never been stronger, and all you foreign hordes coming from Asia can love it or leave it!" then this book is NOT for you. If you're a Tea Partier or a Rick Perry supporter, this book is going to rankle you, maybe even offend you, because Dr. Ferguson recognizes that the United States is an empire in serious trouble. But he doesn't leave the story there.

On the other side of the coin, if you're a staunch "declinist," a radical environmentalist, an Occupier, or a gloom-and-doom jeremiah, this book will ALSO put you off. Niall Ferguson is far too sophisticated a social critic to be easily labeled. He's not a flag waving patriot, and he's not a red-hot revolutionary. He's an enormously accomplished historian who believes that our times are BAD, that civilization is dangerously close to rapid disintegration, that the loss of standards and civility in life are creating a world of unimaginable selfishness, that fear and greed rule the WORLD, not just the markets, and that mass consumerism leads to boredom, loneliness and depression. There's just one catch: He believes we can fix it. He believes we NEED to fix it, quickly, URGENTLY!

So who will actually LIKE this book? Political scientists, intellectuals, and liberals with enough time and money to contemplate BIG issues will love this book. Your typical suburban professional, with a mind inquisitive enough to wonder what the hell is going on will love this book. Anyone living in the "West" with the feeling that we're muddling through a decade-long malaise will appreciate this book. Your political persuasion is really not important.

Dr. Ferguson gets our attention by first dispelling the historical misconception that strong empires tend to fade away with time, due to internal stagnation and external competition. Well, he wants us to know that empires don't fade away, they CRUMBLE, usually within a generation. He supports this view with historical evidence. In other words, we live in a world within which many great civilizations have come crashing down due to [the same] internal stagnation and external competition in a matter of a few years. He thinks the "West," and the United States in particular, are dangerously close to falling off the cliff. The Eurozone, too.

He wants to "save" the "West" from this outcome by 1) sounding the alarm and 2) offering recommendations on how this might be done. This is really, REALLY important and amazing stuff.

The book centers around a metaphor of the "West" using its "killer apps" to rapidly advance economically from the "Rest" over the past 500 years. He sets up a beautifully effective structuralist argument that the "West" adopted an "operating system" which became the world standard, and that six "killer apps" were designed for that operating system that completely marginalized the rest of the world. Dr. Ferguson is quite specific about the six "killer apps" around which he constructs his argument. You'll have to read the book to learn what they are! He dedicates a chapter to detailed discussion of each of these killer apps, and explores how the "Rest" are catching up to the "West" because they have simply learned how to download these apps, and make them work within their own "operating system."

The "Rest" adopted an "operating system" that may have been technically superior, but became marginal because it was not pragmatic or expedient. Here, he's referring to the great Asian and African civilizations, and he's stuffing (and generalizing) the comparative political analysis into a "Beta vs. VHS" or "Apple vs. Microsoft" metaphor. I love it!

Here's the punchline: The six killer apps of the West have become corrupted by viruses and are losing there competitive advantage due to COMPLACENCY. We need to refocus on the continued development of our killer apps, and then "reboot" the entire system. We'll become the better performing, restored machine after this, moved back from the brink by own our effort and skill. We'll need to accommodate a new operating system too, because Asia is rapidly advancing.

If we fail to recognize the problem, our killer apps, and our entire operating system may be replaced by another more aggressive and adaptable standard. The world will become one-sided. The metaphor refers here to the emergence of Asia, once again, supported by historical trends. For those of you who rave that Dr. Ferguson's thesis is racist, I offer this: He's not comparing RACE anywhere in the text, but he is comparing CULTURE. Once again, we're talking about comparative culture, which is an extremely sensitive topic. And, if anything, he is praising the enormous advancements of the civilizations OUTSIDE the "West."

I think this is a brilliant thesis, told with powerful insight, strong historical references, and a lovely post-modern allegorical structure.

Niall Ferguson doesn't know everything, but he is smart enough to know when things are bad enough to take notice. And he's optimistic enough in the tools he learned as a "Westerner" to believe that there's much more good work to do. The West is too young to die. Our apps work. They need updates... now.

Will we heed the call to fix things, or will we let stagnant gridlock, selfish intolerance and complacency destroy our civilization? Niall Ferguson believes the choice is ours. WE can work for a better society, or we can continue to go our own way, knocking down anyone and everyone who stands in our way to... what? More debt, more stagnation, and more Lexapro?

This book is, obviously, highly politically charged, and it does NOT respect the decorum we would generally describe as "politically correct." It's an easy read about weighty issues, but it's going to make you either mad as hell or thankful for such a penetrating mind. But if it moves you to action or, at least to contemplation, it's a successful book.

Masterful, Thought-Provoking and Compulsive Reading

This book is for anyone who loves history. It is an eloquent defence of our civilisation's values, and also an impassioned and compelling argument for why the study of history is so important and is a vital discipline. It is not a matter of agreeing with every point Professor Ferguson makes, although his arguments are very convincing and it is hard indeed to see how to disagree. This book raises a question, which is how the West has achieved predominance over the rest of the world, and, by extension, how it can possibly maintain that predominance if it loses the features which made it so successful and which are being adopted by its rivals. It is a cultural analysis backed by historical evidence, and it is deliberately provocative even in terms of the question posed, not to mention the answers provided. The main value of this book is not, however, its all-encompassing sweep of world history and rich collation of stories and anecdotes, although that is what makes it so much fun to read and saves it from being boring (which many good books are). Professor Ferguson's virtue is that he does not sacrifice intellectual rigour in order to engage the interest of a non-specialist. As an economist as well as an historian his analysis is underpinned by serious scholarship that is not easily accessible to the layman, yet he vigorously challenges the established conventions that are characterised by complacency, presumed even-handedness, and relativism. Professor Ferguson is magnificent at marshalling a wide range of knowledge to support his opinions. It is what history should be all about. This book is an incisive analysis of the past which aims to stimulate debate. It is a reassessment of our assumptions that have a profound impact on the present, and of course also on the future.

USEFUL MATERIAL CONNECTING TYPE WITH WORK

This is just one of the books that shows you how to use personality/psychological type at work and is worth reading. It covers nearly all issues we face in the modern workplace like communicating with co-workers, handling stress in the workplace, ethics, time management etc. all from a Type perspective. Kroger and Thuesen do a good job at explaining how Extroverts handle things differently from Introverts, Sesates from iNtuitives, Feelers from Thinkers, & Judgers from Perceivers. Apart from this, in between it gives various tips on how people with different preferences can better understand and work with each other. It also tells interesting tales about the happenings in the workshops they conduct and how they explain to people that its because of their personality differences that conflicts arise and what they could do to prevent them. It even has some jokes at the end of the book.
I thought that the cream of the book was the descriptions of the 16 personality types. My type description was extremely accurate and insightful and three or four of the points mentioned in that seemed shocking to me because they described what went on in my mind and its something only I knew about.
But beware - It isn't so good on finding out what your type is.
Overall, a good read!

Better tool for self understanding than controlling others

Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate level in the personality theory world. The explanations of the four preferences and how to look for them in one's own self or in others is reasonably well done. I particularly liked how they borrowed from Keirsey's theory and delineated the NT/NF/SP/SJ categories. They do not delve far into the dominant/auxilary/tertiary/inferior functions.

Type Talk at Work explains how people of different types set goals, manage time, hire and fire, resolve conflict, solve problems, and deal with other workplace issues. The range of topics was pretty comprehensive, although by necessity a bit superficial. Given the length of the book the explanation of how different types interact was well done, and had some case studies also. I was not very impressed with the 'Z Problem Solving Model', but it may benefit someone else. The best part of the book is the last part, entitled 'The Sixteen Profiles At Work'. The Sixteen Profiles section details how all of the types tend to think and behave in a workplace setting. I'm sure many people will be amazed at how accurate it can be for them. Type Talk at Work is defintely meant to promote self knowledge, which the authors stress is the first duty of the reader: know yourself well, then try to figure other people out.

I have two criticisms: firstly, the authors are NFs, and in my view did not altogether avoid unconsciously writing the book for other NFs. That is a minor criticism, as the book overall is well done. I also believe that Kroeger and Thuesen did not warn readers to properly use type theory, in other words use it in a very careful, ethical way. The book is very dangerous in the wrong hands and misuse of knowledge and information about someone can and does happen in the business world. The reader needs to know that sharing this type of information can be very risky.

I don't mind recommending the book, particularly because a type book regarding the workplace is badly needed and I'm not aware of any others. econ

Can't we all just get along!

This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc.

Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area.

To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases.

Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this.
