Stands the test of time

Galileo is, I believe, the first of Heinlein's celebrated juvenile books. I know I first read it shortly after learning to read. I could not have been older than seven. Holy cow. While the idea of Nazis on the moon is ludicrous these days, the story itself continues to compellingly engage the mind. The dialogue and situations, if you are old enough to remember anything of those days, still has the ring of truth. Heinlein was just beginning to hit his stride as a full-time, for-real author when he wrote this. It is sublime to read him as he stretches his wings and finds he is very comfortable. This book is comfort food for the mind, sort of like a meatloaf dinner.

Classic Science Fiction at it's best, technically accurate for it's time, inspiration to engineers and scientists.

This was Heinlein's first novel published in book form, and the first in his excellent "juvenile" series which included Space Cadet, Time For The Stars, Starman Jones, The Star Beast, Tunnel In The Sky, etc., and it is still my all-time favorite. Heinlein manages to make believable the tale of a scientist (Dr. Cargraves) organizing three 18-year-old boys of a rocket club to build a nuclear powered moon rocket. If you have an interest in space travel you'll get sucked in and won't put the book down until it's over, no matter how dated and unlikely the premise at first appears. It is written with Heinlein's usual skill (that earned him four Hugo awards), and the characters are easy to identify with, especially for any young space enthusiasts. This was also the basis for the 1950 classic film Destination Moon, although about all that remains unchanged in the film is the name Dr. Cargraves. In the book there is a veiled threat from unknown enemies that turn out to be Nazis (this was the first thing Heinlein wrote after the war) - in the film there's just a veiled reference to a communist threat. I suspect the film also draws from Heinlein's more sophisticated treatment from the same period, The Man Who Sold The Moon.
On 6 October 1988, after Robert Heinlein's death, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded him the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal:
"In recognition of his meritorious service to the Nation and mankind in advocating and promoting the exploration of space. Through dozens of superbly written novels and essays and his epoch-making movie Destination Moon, he helped inspire the Nation to take its first step into space and onto the Moon." -- James C. The first Heinlein

Rocket Ship Galileo was the first Heinlein book published initially in novel form. (Later some of his magazine novellas would be published as novels). It shows some rough edges and a plot full of unlikely coincidence. It is also full of the spunky Heinlein characters and love of engineering and technology for which we all came to appreciate the man.

As you read the first of the book, you'll almost wonder why NASA went to so much trouble in their moon shots when they could have done it much more easily had they followed the tech blueprint in this book! LOL Heinlein had a knack for making his fiction seem reasonable and real, and even this early effort is no exception.

I first read this as a kid, and I'll have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it again almost 50 years later. I never read it in between, and the interval was so long that I didn't really remember a thing about it, giving me the pleasant sensation of reading a new Heinlein book for the first time ... something I sadly can't really do anymore.

This is a short read with a dead-simple, almost na�ve, plot. While it won't fascinate you as his later novels did, it will give you a nostalgic feel for what first led you to love Heinlein's writing.

Highly recommended.

this is a softcover book, and was surprised to find it had been wrapped in a plastic bag, which was taped to secure it closed. it was boxed! with air bag padding, before they shipped it! usually the large soft covers are put into a plastic bag to ship, and so do suffer some damage, even if minor. this is a beautiful book, arriving in pristine condition, and is a perfect gift! thank you!

I have all four of Scape's books, this one is a great follow up to his first one! Very well done and all of his books have terrific illustrations. He is a highly talented artist and if you are interested in graffiti art, his books won't disappoint!

Before she became a Franciscan, she lived in Kent in the south of England and has ridden horses since her childhood. She trained with Col. Hume Dudgeon in Ireland before running the Benenden Riding Establishment where she trained a horse for the Olympic Games and successfully competed in Three Day Eventing herself, being one of the first women to ride at the Badminton Horse trials in 1952.
After her marriage she worked with her husband to start their own Moat House Riding School and among their many pupils was HRH The Princess Anne (European Champion in 1971), who rode with them for five years, and Virginia Leng (World Champion in 1986).
When her husband died, Chiara entered the convent and subsequently was able to get involved with the Riding for the Disabled Association in 1980. Since that time she has been responsible for training at all levels in the United Kingdom and as the International Liaison Officer for RDA, travelling to a number of countries to help with setting up groups and encouraging volunteers to know how worthwhile therapeutic riding is for disable people.
Hatton Hall trained a horse for the Stockholm Olympic Games, was one of the first women to ride at the Badminton Horse trials in 1952 and taught both HRH The Princess Anne (European Champion in 1971) and Virginia Leng, (World Champion in 1986). Her personal memoir recalls the trials and tribulations of setting up a riding school (more than once), the mishaps (Princess Anne going missing at the chip van), the triumphs at horse shows and the tragedy of her husband’s alcoholism.
Chiara Hatton Hall is one of the pioneers of Riding for the Disabled and the second half of this book is a record of the international growth of the riding for the disabled movement, with reports from all around the world. This is the movement that has most recently hit the sporting headlines with many thrilling equestrian performances at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Chiara Hatton Hall’s request to her convent ??head?? to help out at Cranleigh Club in 1986?? A lifelong love of horses and God

Sr. Chiara loved and lived a full life centered around God and horses. Married, in between a husband who battled depression and alcohol, and a Dad who wanted control of her life, Chiara became a beloved riding instructor. When her husband died, she took all that prayer straight into the convent and God answered back with a call to horse riding therapy for persons with life challenges.

The only drawback to this book is that the story was hard for me to read due to the detached style, and the time meandering beetween years in the telling from one part of her life to another. However, I appreciated her honesty in the pain and struggles both outside and inside the convent. Also, the photographs are a good piece of history, chronicling a faithful soul out of the 60's and 70's who stayed faithful in more than one area of her life.

I am glad that it is on Kindle Unlimited. Blesssings to Sr. Chiara and her congregation.

a no-nonsense approach to performance appraisals

I found the book very easy to follow, and the principles and concepts were down-to-earth. The author gives a no-nonsense approach in performance appraisals, using common-sense and throws out all the other HR mumbo-jumbo. He also lays out a good argument for tying the PA to the company's objectives and missions, ideas on employee motivation (forget the "employee of the month" ideas), how to deal with difficult reviewees (those who just don't understand how their performance is bad), and the best way to handle performance planning meetings at the beginning of the year and the importance of these.

Questions, Answers, and a Great Deal More

Although this book was first published in 2002, I only recently read it and, as my rating correctly indicates, I think it is an outstanding piece of work. Performance measurement is one of the most important and yet least understood business subjects and it is certain to become even more important during the next several years as organizations become more "virtual" and many of those involved with them become "free agents" or are at least more independent. Also, on average, people now make 7-9 job changes during a career. The average for those in my generation is half of that, if not less. Grote wrote this book primarily for managers who are responsible for measuring the performance of others.

A relatively recent and (in my opinion) promising trend is that, increasingly, one of the metrics used for evaluating the performance of a manager is how well she or he measures the performance of others. That is the subject for another book which Grote, perhaps, will one day write.

Given the substance of the material in this book and how Grote wishes to organize and then present it, the Q&A format seems eminently appropriate. He adds a clever variation: The inclusion of "Tell Me More" comments after his initial response to each core question. I greatly appreciate the personal, conversational tone which Grote establishes and then sustain in each of his three books, the other two being Discipline Without Punishment and Forced Ranking. He comes about as close as a business thinker/writer can to seeming to interact directly with his reader.

Obviously, this book will be of primary interest and value to supervisors but I also highly recommend it to those who are supervised. Now more than ever before, it is imperative to make crystal clear what expectations are and how performance relative to those expectations is measured, especially during interviews of candidates and then, once hired, during their orientation...which few organizations do well. (That is another book awaiting someone to produce it.) As Grote would be among the first to point out, the results of countless research studies which examine employee satisfaction concur that feeling appreciated, believing in the value of the work done, and having one's performance evaluated fairly and consistently are among the attributes which participants in the research studies considered to be most important. Also revealing is the fact that, depending upon which results are consulted, compensation was ranked anywhere from #9 and #14 in importance.
