You Must Practice What You Read
By Ronald T. Jacobs
I purchased this book primarily because it was referenced by several authors of other Mckinsey books that I've read. I was taken aback by the price of the book but I'm of the school of thought that great ideas need not come in large packages. As like many of the other reviewers, I found this book a tough read and had to break it down into smaller bite size readings. What I did that help me tremedously was build a Pyramid chart capturing the SCQ ---Answer using sticky notes. Once built, I was able to easily see the ideas she was presenting and was able to clarify my thinking and writing substantially.

For years I struggled with getting my ideas out of my head and onto paper coherently. Now, I have a great tool that speeds this process up and get my point across succintly.

Civilian Warriors: The Inside Story of Blackwater and the Unsung Heroes of the War on Terror, by Erik Prince

No company in our time has been as mysterious or as controversial as Blackwater. Founded by former Navy SEAL Erik Prince in 1997, it recruited special forces veterans and others with the skills and courage to take on the riskiest security jobs in the world. As its reputation grew, government demand for its services escalated, and Blackwater's men eventually completed nearly one hundred thousand missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both the Bush and Obama administrations found the company indispensible. It sounds like a classic startup success story, except for one problem: Blackwater has been demonized around the world. From uninformed news coverage to grossly distorted fictional portrayals, Blackwater employees have been smeared as mercenaries, profiteers, jackbooted thugs, and worse. Because of the secrecy requirements of Blackwater's contracts with the Pentagon, the State Department, and the CIA, Prince was unable to speak out when his company's opponents spread false information. But now he's able to tell the full and often shocking story of Blackwater's rise and fall. In Civilian Warriors, Prince pulls no punches and spares no details. He explains his original goal of building an elite center for military and law enforcement training. He recounts how the company shifted gears after 9/11. He honors our troops while challenging the Pentagon's top leadership. And he reveals why highly efficient private military contractors have been essential to running our armed forces, since long before Blackwater came along. Above all, Prince debunks myths about Blackwater that spread while he was forced to remain silent-myths that tarnished the memory of men who gave their lives for their country but never got the recognition they deserved.

He reveals new information about some of the biggest controversies of the War on Terror, including:

• The true story of the Nisour Square massacre in Baghdad.
• The actual details of Blackwater's so-called impunity in Iraq.
• The events leading up to the televised deaths of Blackwater contractors in Fallujah.

Prince doesn't pretend to be perfect, and he doesn't hide the sometimes painful details of his private life. But he has done a great public service by setting the record straight. His book reads like a thriller but is too improbable to be fiction.

Introduction

December 6, 2003

AT ELEVEN P.M., EIGHTEEN CARS, WATCHED OVERHEAD BY U.S. ARMY APACHE and Kiowa Warrior helicopters, as well as by a pair of Blackwater helicopters, known as Little Birds, stormed out of the Green Zone. They turned onto a pockmarked roadway, drove past scorched traffic barriers and burned-out remains of vehicles once used for suicide bombings, and sped toward Baghdad International Airport. A motorcade escorting a head of state and the U.S. secretary of defense doesn’t travel light. Especially not on the “Highway of Death.”

That multilane stretch of asphalt connects Iraq’s largest international airport with the coalition-occupied Green Zone. For years, insurgents had effectively owned the five or so miles, ambushing convoys, diplomats, and American troops roughly once a day. So dangerous was the road that the State Department would ultimately outlaw its personnel from using it at all. And even before that, no one took that road without a plan.

But sometimes Paul Bremer wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Shortly before eleven p.m., Bremer, the United States presidential envoy and administrator in Iraq, had finished a meeting with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld outside the Green Zone. To the surprise of his Blackwater security detail, Bremer insisted he would see the secretary off at the airport.

Frank Gallagher, the barrel-chested head of the detail charged with keeping Bremer alive, quickly recalibrated travel plans. “Needless to say, some of the radio traffic back to me expressed grave concern about doing the mission and questioned my sanity,” Gallagher later remembered. “But I could see the look in [Bremer’s] eyes that this was not open for debate.”

The trip out was uneventful, but Gallagher sensed the worst was yet to come. The show of force had certainly tipped off the insurgents that something unusual was going on at the airport. And Bremer’s Blackwater motorcade would have to travel back to the Green Zone without the Pentagon detail that had accompanied Rumsfeld.

Once Bremer had said his good-byes to the secretary, the Coalition Provisional Authority leader and his right-hand man, Brian McCormack, climbed into the back of an up-armored Chevy Suburban SUV. Gallagher gathered his Blackwater team. “I explained that getting back to the Green Zone was going to be an adventure, and made sure that everyone was aware of the dangers,” he said. “We promised to have a cup of mead in Valhalla later that evening.”

Contractor humor.

Around eleven twenty p.m., Bremer’s pared-down convoy pulled away from the airport. The nimble Blackwater helicopters darted out front, providing top cover and scanning the roadway for threats. Gallagher, in the front passenger seat, wrapped his fingers around his matte black M4 carbine and stared out into the darkness that enveloped the roadway. Bremer and McCormack chatted about meeting schedules for the next day.

Suddenly, a call from a Blackwater bird above: “Be alert—a vehicle ahead is backing down an on-ramp onto the road.” The driver of Bremer’s SUV pulled into the far left lane, closest to the highway median. The lead and follow armored cars maneuvered to flank Bremer on the right.

There was a jarring crack against the bulletproof window on Gallagher’s door—what he later learned had been an AK-47 round that had marked him for death. And then, with a horrible flash of light, an improvised explosive device (IED) rocked the armored Humvee behind Bremer’s SUV, destroying the Humvee’s axle with a deafening blast.

Bremer’s driver swerved and battled to keep all four tires of the SUV on the ground. From the darkness, insurgents opened fire with AK-47s, rattling machine-gun fire off the right side of the car. There was nowhere to hide; flames and headlights provided just enough light to grasp what was unfolding. “We’d been ambushed, a highly organized, skillfully executed assassination attempt,” Bremer later wrote. “I swung around and looked back. The Suburban’s armored-glass rear window had been blown out by the IED. And now AK rounds were whipping through the open rectangle.”

“Tuna! Tuna! Tuna!” shouted the voice from the radio in Bremer’s SUV. It was Blackwater’s shift leader, limping along in the battered armored vehicle, calling out the code for the SUVs to drive through the ambush: Leave the Humvees, he was saying; get Bremer out of there now.

Contractors in the two helicopters above unloaded enough ammunition to repel the attack, while Blackwater’s drivers ignored the burns on their feet from the heat of the blast and stomped on the gas through the fog of smoke on the roadway. One of the trailing Suburbans pulled immediately alongside Bremer’s car, shielding it while speeding down the Highway of Death so close together that the cars’ sideview mirrors touched. “I asked for a casualty report and learned that two of our four vehicles were damaged, but limping along,” Gallagher said.

The stench of explosives lingered in the ambassador’s vehicle as they made it to the Green Zone. And soon, the Humvees and helicopters made it back as well.

Miraculously, no one was injured.

Since I first enrolled in the Naval Academy after high school, my life’s mission has been to serve God, serve my family, and serve the United States with honor and integrity. I did it first as a midshipman, then as a SEAL, then—when personal tragedy called me home from the service—as a contractor providing solutions for some of the thorniest problems on earth. The business of war has never been pretty, but I did my job legally, and I did it completely. Too well, perhaps, growing Blackwater until it became something resembling its own branch of the military and other government agencies.

During my dozen years as company CEO, we filled contracts for the State Department, the Department of Defense, the CIA, elite law enforcement agencies around the world, and many others. We did everything from protecting heads of state to delivering the mail. Blackwater expanded from a simple training center in the North Carolina swampland to encompass dozens of business divisions ranging from surveillance blimp development and construction to intelligence services to K9 operations. We became the ultimate tool in the war on terror, pushing a thousand contractors into Iraq and hundreds more into Afghanistan under the Republican Bush administration, then continuing a connection to Democratic president Barack Obama that was closer than he has ever wanted to admit. My company’s history is a proud tale of performance excellence and driven entrepreneurialism.

The public relations battle at home, however, was very different from a firefight on the front lines. Those conflicts my men and I were trained for. Stateside, though, thanks to endless waves of frivolous lawsuits, congressional hearings, and inaccurate press reports, Blackwater was slagged as the face of military evil. Gun-toting bullies for hire. We were branded mercenaries and murderers, and were made the whipping boy for the public’s fury over the Bush administration’s policies in the Middle East. After failing in their multiyear effort to win hearts and minds in Iraq, the bureaucrats decided a company that had repeatedly answered this government’s pleas for help was suddenly more valuable as a scapegoat. I was strung up so the politicians could feign indignation and pretend my men hadn’t done exactly what they had paid us handsomely to do.

There is much the government doesn’t want told about the work we did: the truth about our State Department–sanctioned operational tactics in Iraq, for instance, including our rules of engagement; or Blackwater’s crucial involvement with President Obama’s ever expanding terrorist-hunting tactics in Pakistan and beyond; or even the depth of government reliance on contractors today and the outsourcing of its war machine. Government agencies don’t want that spotlight being shone on our work, nor to applaud the greatest advantage Blackwater offered them: increased capability. They want increased deniability.

For years my company’s work was misconstrued and misrepresented. At the time, our government contracts explicitly barred Blackwater from responding to the public broadsides. We were never allowed to explain things such as how we secured the contracts we did, or what really happened during a bloody Baghdad shoot-out in September 2007, or the way shifting political tectonic plates crushed my company as an act of partisan theatrics. Or how the one job I loved more than any other was ripped away from me thanks to gross acts of professional negligence at the CIA.

So now I’m done keeping quiet. What’s been said before is only half the story—and I won’t sit idly by while the bureaucrats go after me so that everyone else can just go back to business as usual. The true history of Blackwater is exhilarating, rewarding, exasperating, and tragic. It’s the story of men taking bullets to protect the men who take all the credit, a tale of patriots whose names became known only when lawyers and politicians needed to blame somebody for something.

Our critics have spoken. Now it’s my turn.

Great story, great insight into one of Iraq's most closely guarded chapters from the man at the center of it
By Alex
Just typed up a couple pages, computer crashed, can't retrieve it, so here now goes a quick summary from the top of my head:

Erik Prince, real Man of Mystery speaks. Portrayed by some as archvillain, thought by others to be some kind of modern day Knight Templar, this real life Navy Seal and entrepreneur tells all about the founding of Blackwater and their role in Iraq.

The book starts off as a mini-biography of his dad, a man who started off as a salesman making forty cents an hour to founder of a billion-dollar company. Prince makes it clear that his father instilled in him the foundation that led to his later success.

It was as a Navy Seal in the Balkans that Prince first realized the need for private training facilities for special operations and highly focused training. Previously, Seals and their elite counterparts often had trouble getting sufficient training time on military training facilities that were over capacity from general use training by others.

Columbine becomes a turning point for the Blackwater team as law enforcement brutally realizes the need for more specialized training. Several years later Iraq explodes and the need for highly trained security teams draws Blackwater into its largest conflict and most controversial affair. While under government contract, Blackwater was forbidden to speak out publicly in its defense, especially against one high profile lawsuit that eventually tarnished its reputation almost beyond repair. Now free to speak, Prince effectively reveals The Other Side of the Story, and it's clear that Blackwater was often a scapegoat for others' ineptitude and politically driven agendas.

Many interesting stories are revealed, such as a huge ambush of the Polish Ambassor. Unlike Banghazi, this has a happy ending as Blackwater and Polish security valiantly band together and keep him alive. In a later ceremony honoring the fallen, the Polish ambassador gratefully credits Blackwater for his survival. Lesser known stories of BW's involvement providing security in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans are told. A sweet love story between him and his beloved wife Joan is interwoven in between them all.

The book is all meat and no filler whatsoever. Fact-dense with so many footnote links that it becomes hard to turn the page without accidentally touching one.

Perhaps the best summary comes from the book itself:

"There is much the government doesn't want told about the work we did: the truth about our State Department-sanctioned operational tactics in Iraq, including our rules of engagement; or Blackwater's involvement with President Obama's ever expanding terrorist-hunting tactics in Pakistan and beyond..."

Blackwater Wife
By EK
As the wife of someone who has worked for Blackwater for 9 years, I can attest that this book is 100% genuine. Finally a realistic and factual light has been shed on this company and it’s heroes. The men KIA and the men and women who risk their lives everyday for our country are getting the respect they deserve. It’s an informative read and I highly recommend it for anyone familiar with Blackwater and for anyone who would like to know the truth.

Eye opening and candid, well documented and troubling book
By J. M Ullman
well, like most people I had a negative opinion of Blackwater. First of all the name was ill chosen and reeks of evil. Second, of course, all I ever saw were the pics online and on TV of these massive guys cradling sub machine guns. Who were these mercenaries, I wondered?
Well, of course, like most people I was grossly under- and ill informed.
Prince has his flaws, of course, let's not be naive. My wife passed away from cancer too but i never was unfaithful. Could I understand why he was? Maybe? Maybe not. But at least he owns it. This was a book about blackwater, not about him, and he could have tried to cover up his foibles. He briefly mentions his family life throughout the book perhaps to show some of his humanity. I found him likeable and candid, and eminently believable.

He supports almost everything he says with documentation, and refutes most critics with equally valid documentation - e.g. when the government tries to accuse him of overcharging them. He contends they actually under bid most of the competition (which still is there, by the way - Triple Canopy, for example. Why isn't Hillary and Henry after them.?) and can prove it.

As far as Blackwater he does an excellent job explaining how this type of contractor is a time honored factor in warfare. Oddly most of their work was security, as opposed to combat. Our own nation was founded with the help of flat out mercenaries - LaFayette, von Steuben, etc. In addition, we fought against mercenaries - the Hessians. And he shows beautifully how biased and grotesquely ignorant, naive, and opportunistic people like Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and Henry Waxman are. The fact that Obama still employed Blackwater, the fact that Blackwater RESCUED Biden, Hagel and Kerry from the Hindu Kush and they were too stupid or naive to realize it wasn't the Army....the fact that lawyers tried to destroy them and never prevailed....were all eye opening examples of gross hypocrisy.
I overall thought it was an excellent book and the thing that bothered me the most was the subplot - the fact that our military is so bloated, so awash in regulations, bureaucracy, compliance, and so unable themselves to field a complete army - they NEEDED these type of contractors. For example, historically he says that it used to be for every 10 soldiers/military they needed 1 contractor. By the present day in Iraq, it is one contractor for each soldier. And part of that is the fact that the supposed Obama drawdown in Iraq is actually, like much else in this fraudulent administration - really isn't, because every soldier who is leaving Iraq is being replaced by....a contractor! So the amount of Americans or American advisors and contractors is staying the same. The number isn't changing; just that they are hired help instead of Army, Navy, Marine or AirForce. The government, army and State department simply do not have the personnel to do what they need to do. Partially this is because they are spread thin. Partially because they are inefficient. Partially because they are grossly (and willingly, btw) encumbered by absurd rules - rules of engagement in particular, but also rules about staffing, behavior, compliance, etc. What I took away from this is that our great army isn't so great. It is small and constrained by idiots - witness the entire idiocy of the Fort Hood shooter trial. Our soldiers are terrific but they are working for politicians, even their officers (if you don't believe me, read Honor and Betrayal next). And as a result, contractors have to step in and fill the gaps. They can do it faster, better, and more efficiently. That thin military....with nations like China and Mexico, North Korea and a resurgent Russia....who don't have the same rules....augurs not well for us.

Harmonic Experience: Tonal Harmony from Its Natural Origins to Its Modern Expression, by W. A. Mathieu

An exploration of musical harmony from its ancient fundamentals to its most complex modern progressions, addressing how and why it resonates emotionally and spiritually in the individual.

W. A. Mathieu, an accomplished author and recording artist, presents a way of learning music that reconnects modern-day musicians with the source from which music was originally generated. As the author states, "The rules of music--including counterpoint and harmony--were not formed in our brains but in the resonance chambers of our bodies." His theory of music reconciles the ancient harmonic system of just intonation with the modern system of twelve-tone temperament. Saying that the way we think music is far from the way we do music, Mathieu explains why certain combinations of sounds are experienced by the listener as harmonious. His prose often resembles the rhythms and cadences of music itself, and his many musical examples allow readers to discover their own musical responses.

Review
"Mathieu's books are worth reading for anyone in any field of music--jazz, classical, gospel, or any other. He's found the words to tell the power of music." (Pete Seeger, folksinger)

"This book goes beyond what most textbooks offer, and its highly original pedagogy deserves the attention of every teacher of harmony. Above all, this is a book for anyone who would like to acquire harmony as a lived experience rather than as mere memorization of unyielding rules on paper." (Chien-Chang Yang, Quarterly Journal of the MLA)

"Mathieu is consistently proving himself to be one of the best in musical theory." (John Coltrane in Downbeat Magazine)

"This volume offers experiential keys to help unlock the mystery of how music works its deep affect upon us. Harmonic Experience extends any reader's understanding of music and is a user-friendly, elegant and graceful work. It is a technical treatise about the inner workings of music." (Daniel Atesh Sonneborn, Smithsonian Institution)

The best harmony book I've ever read
By jawdfs
While i can't say i've read everything on the subject, far from it, i have read Schenker's and Hindemith's books on harmony, Forte's book and a number of others commonly found in University libraries. (My BA is in Music Theory & Composition - fyi) I've found that many of these authors are genuinely interesting and insightful (Schenker in particular, much to my own surprise) however none come close to Mathieu's book in terms of illuminating the essence of the modal/tonal universe for me. Beginning with the actual physics of sound, Matheiu's book builds a theoretical framework like no other, with fewer assumptions and on a more solid footing than anyone else i am aware of. More excitingly, he has helped me to expand greatly the harmonic universe within my own compositions.

As one who has been involved all his life in the field of music (40+ years), i can say that this is the most important book i know for anyone interested in music theory, improvisation and composition.

Simply amazing - a real "ear-opener"!
By A Customer
What a great book! This should perhaps be the very first required reading for any music education. Mathieu first steps back from our usual musical assumptions and examines how sound works. The physics of sound is integral to our experience of it and western music uses a tuning system which is arbitrary (if advantageous in many ways). This is the book that answers so many questions I couldn't even identify - Why does music 'work' the way it does? How do overtones work and what implications do they have for music as a whole? Why does a minor third sound 'sad' and a major third 'happy' (is it all cultural conditioning)? Mathieu definitely addresses the spiritual side of all this, of sound and music and intervals, but never presumes to have answers to such questions. I've only explored a part of the book - it goes on to look at so many facets of the structure and possible organizations of sound and music, really advanced theory. Oh, and throughout, exercises are given, singing the pure intervals at hand, for instance, which serve to hone the ear and the voice and to make all of this sink in to where it counts. Anyone interested in music and theory should check this one out, a definite classic!

The No Breakfast Plan and the Fasting-Cure, by Edward Hooker Dewey

This volume is a history, or a story, of an evolution in the professional care of the sick. It begins in inexperience and in a haze of medical superstition, and ends with a faith that Nature is the all in all in the cure of disease. The hygiene unfolded is both original and revolutionary: its practicality is of the largest, and its physiology beyond any possible question.

About the Author
Dr. Edward Hooker Dewey was a physician ahead of his time. Ignoring the medical practices of his time, Dewey used his keen observational powers to develop a "no-breakfast" approach to health and weight loss. These universal principals hold true in every culture and in every age of man.

Gave me great ideas
By J. Cass
As a woman, turning 60 is creepy. You don't look 60, but you just don't feel like your old self. I personally need to lose about 30lbs. It's been a real struggle (young girls...if you think you're having trouble now, get it together. The 50's are coming and it ain't no picnic).

Somehow this book inspired me to re-look at fasting and it's benefits. When I was young I loved fasting. It made me feel energized and light. Helped keep me skinny. I didn't think I could go full fasting anymore. Food is just so delicious (another thing that changes with age) So a semi-fast was just the jump start I've been looking for. I do my own thing but this inspired me to really think what I could do to incorporate this into my lifestyle.
I'm now semi-fasting Mon-Tues till dinner. At dinner I eat a small meal of protein, usually grilled chicken legs or thighs. I can eat as many as I want but usually end up eating about 2-3. On Wednesday I start a regular diet of healthy foods and lower my calories to about 1200. I make an allowance for a weekend cheat meal with friends or treat like ice cream or chocolate. Come Mon-Tues, I start the fast again until dinner. On Wednesday mornings I weigh myself. So far in two weeks I've lost almost 7lbs.

Now remember, this book was written in England in the early 1900's and might sound a little crazy. But fasting and semi-fasting has been around since cavemen couldn't find a burger king. So this is a history book as well as a way to build knowledge about the body and disease. Newer books are out like Dr. Joel Furman's Eat to Live and Videos like "Sick Tired and Nearly dead", all are inspiring as well but they focus on their way of eating/fasting. there is also the Book by Beth Christian "Easy Alternative Day Fasting" also a good read and filled with ideas.

The difference for me? I took what I needed from all the information gathered in this book and made a lifestyle change I can live with. It includes semi-fasting days, diet days, and a few cheats for my occasional glass of wine or a treat. I'm willing to workout hard at the gym, but giving up pleasurable foods at my age just isn't going to happen. Been there, done that and I want to enjoy life not be a slave to it.

We all have to find something that works for us...For me, I never really felt hungry until late afternoons and was just eating because every other book tells you, you need to eat your biggest meal in the morning or breakfast. Three times a week I work out with a trainer at 7am. Because I never eat breakfast before working out, fasting hasn't affected my workouts. I wake up, go to the gym, come home shower and have tea or coffee, water and 4oz of fresh OJ, Lunch is water, Iced tea, 4oz OJ and sometime a bit of broth or miso. A snack, is more tea and if I really feel I need something a slice of watermelon. By dinner I'm finally hungry (true hunger) and eat 2-3 chicken legs or thighs. Sometime if I'm in the mood I'll try a grilled steak instead of chicken. 4 times a week at 7pm I have interval workout classes (think bootcamp) and I eat my protein at 5pm. I have more energy on my semi fasting days then I do on my regular eating days, most likely because I'm not weighed down.

So this book get's 5 stars because it inspired me to take a look back and do something for the future. It wasn't until some funny language came in that I even realized it was written in 1900. Like "(talking about a patients fast after three weeks) "he felt he should like some pigs' feet jelly." So Thress consumed two slices of the jelly and one piece of gluten bread, with butter. He say's he enjoyed it and felt well afterward. Do they even sell such an item anymore. Maybe on Amazon. lol Plus, you can't beat the kindle prices.

Intermittent Fasting, New Solution to Health, Copyright 1900
By Querulouse
First, I'll highlight a few quick facts that you can learn from reading this book. Next I'll cover some of the details and the science. Then, I'll connect it to topics of interest 114 years after the book was written and make my own subjective appeal to action.

Factual highlights from the book:
1. Doctors used to force-feed whiskey and cow's milk to deathly ill patients. They continued to do so in the face of vomiting and weeks and months of no improvement in patient condition. This was considered normal. (Not unlike modern-day prescriptions of high-carb diets for diabetics...)
2. Frequent food consumption is not needed to maintain mental energy or function. The brain functions beautifully in the fasted state. Later work on ketogenic diets confirm this, though the author fails to anticipate misguided theories of glucose as "brain-fuel." He notes awareness of 6 cases of improvements in epilepsy, a surprise to no one familiar with modern epilepsy treatment.
3. Eating in the absence of hunger is probably harmful, much more so in a state of illness.
4. Doctors are lousy at preventing and treating chronic disease, at least in America. 150 years after Dewey started his practice, little improvement is evident. As he puts it, the typical doctor "does no more to prevent bodily ailings than other people, and is just as liable to become the victim of bad habits."
5. Sleep is essential for the brain.
6. Morning hunger is (mostly) unnatural. (A "cultural disease" is essentially what he calls it, comparing those who "need" breakfast to alcoholics. His concept is similar to a common term today: "diseases of civilization.")

The author, a Dr. Dewey, appears to be writing from Pennsylvania, USA. His medical career started at the beginning of the Civil War, so he of course saw many deaths and was able to observe differences in treatment philosophy between doctors. This traumatic experience led him to believe that many interventions were useless and lacked good evidence of efficacy. He noted that similar outcomes were evident under wildly divergent treatment protocols, and thus came to doubt much of the conventional medical wisdom of his day. He particularly opposed harsh treatments (which he termed barbaric) that lacked evidence of efficacy.

The book is mostly a compilation of case studies, interspersed with commentary and anecdote. In the sixth chapter, the author recounts his own long experience with chronic indigestion and how he eventually applied the logic of fasting, which he had for years used on his patients, to himself. By skipping breakfast he discovered he had could ditch his Omeprazole (which hadn't even been invented yet) and was cured of his condition. He eventually came to believe that most or all chronic diseases could be prevented or cured simply by skipping breakfast. His patients reported improvement in many conditions, such as eyesight, hearing, headaches, immune function, sleep, asthma, sinus and skin ailments. He also came to believe that fasting would allow the body to heal itself from pretty much any disease, if survival were even possible.

His etiology of disease is dodgy. His thinking really predates modern genetics, so we should not be too surprised. Even so, he clearly fails in discounting the role of infectious agents, though he was obviously not ignorant of the importance of sterilization for something like surgery. His hypothesis is, essentially, that localized structural defects are the cause of chronic disease, and these defects are present at birth. Then, when the brain experiences stress or reduced energy, circulatory dilation ensues and debilitates those defective structures (sinuses, joints, etc.). He is probably incorrect to say that energy is diverted from the brain to the digestive system after a meal, but regardless, he is correct that meal timing is important for human health, and that sleep is critical for the brain's self-maintenance. He is definitely incorrect in calling epilepsy a disease of "surplus food." His contention that alcoholism is initiated in infancy by on-demand breastfeeding is absurd. While extended fasts are probably beneficial for many diseases, I know of no reason to believe, for instance, that pancreatic beta cells can be regrown in this manner, so Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is at least one disease outside the scope of his proposed panacea.

Despite the scientific shortcomings, he correctly anticipated modern research into circadian rhythms, which confirm the hormone-disrupting (and other) effects of eating at inappropriate times. While he noted the importance of food timing and quantity, he mostly failed to note the importance of composition and quality. (Writing prior to the all-out industrialization of the food system, it is fairly unsurprising that his only dietary villain would be sweets like pies. He did restrict sugar for at least some of his patients.) He distinguished true hunger from the urge to eat, calling the concept "a new study in dietetics" and relating it strongly to timing of meals. Scientists have since then been able describe in much detail circadian/endocrine relationships and their effect on, among other things, hunger. Research on calorie restriction and fasting also align with Dewey's prescription of intermittent fasting. His lack of attribution to infectious agents, however, is stark, because they are now known to be involved in at least some chronic diseases, and inconclusive evidence is present for many others.

Dr. Dewey apparently endured much criticism from the doctors of his time. After 115 years, however, his basic hypothesis of meal timing has gained much scientific support. From personal experience, I can concur with another of his observations: it is very difficult to overeat when you only have one meal each day. While today's nutritional and medical experts continue to pursue a failed discourse of calories and overeating, you can avail yourself of an ancient solution to a contemporary problem. Time your meals in accordance with your biology and skip breakfast now. Intermittent fasting is not a fad, and it is not new. The book's prescription, "to give the stomach a long rest of sixteen hours or more," is healthy and in accordance with biology.

Finally, I'd like to muse on a quote from the book. "As an abnormal condition overweight has received a great deal of attention in the way of misguided effort to both prevention and cure. These efforts are such conspicuous failures that even the patent medicine man has not found his 'anti-fat nostrums' the happy means to fortune." Stunning words from only 114 years ago. Much scientific knowledge has been gained since then, but no miracle fat loss pill has been able to stand the test of time. For all our learning, where is our wisdom?

Read it for the prose!
By TJ
The science might be a bit dicey at times, but you can't argue with the author's experience. And it's great advice to eat only when you're hungry--we're seeing that today in the increasing popularity of "intermittent fasting". But the real pleasure of this book, which was written in 1900, is the old-fashioned and beautiful prose.

Organizational Behaviour In Construction, by Anthony Walker

The core of all successful organizations is the effectiveness with which people work together. Individuals have differing characteristics and personalities, and the manner in which they interact is the key to meeting organizational objectives. This is the case for all organizations, but particularly so in construction, which is distinctly different from other industries. Construction is complex and highly differentiated, with a wide range of specialists with disparate professional skills working in a highly integrated way to deliver projects successfully. Understanding how the people involved in construction behave and work together is necessary for projects to have successful outcomes.

Organizational behaviour is an established field in mainstream management literature but general treatments cannot reflect the specific issues and idiosyncrasies of the construction industry and the people who inhabit it. Organizational Behaviour in Construction addresses the behaviour of individuals and groups within the different organizations which come together on construction projects and within the organizations created to manage projects. It describes how their behaviour impacts on the performance of construction organizations and their contribution to the project as a whole. Drawing on mainstream organizational literature but putting it into the specific context of construction, and containing many illustrations drawn from the industry, this book will be required reading for all senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of construction, as well as middle and senior management in the industry.

"The book would be appropriate for undergraduate and postgraduate students in construction as well as middle and senior management. While the author employs mainstream literature on organizational behavior, he effectively makes it relevant specifically to the construction industry." (Book News, 1 October 2011)
