Inspiring and practical read!

If you want to rethink how you spend your time, in order to pursue work that matters, then read this book. Jocelyn helps us understand why we're so addicted to email, and then shares steps we can take to break out of it. She even provides templates to help us write more effective emails. Once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down. And, even better, you'll walk away with at least three things you can do right now to get out of your inbox and back to work that matters.

Tame your greatest time suck so you can do important things again

In these info overloaded days, a book should not be any longer than is necessary, and this book is also mercifully short saving us and the author time and hits the point immediately. Much of the techniques stated in the book, you may already know, but to be put into a concentrated form and delivered with urgency and concision, just might get you to take action to tame your inbox this time. Two of the biggest benefits to me personally, so far, have been to set up VIP inboxes and to give up the unachievable goal of "Inbox Zero". I felt my life improve almost immediately afterwards and asked myself "Why didn't I do this sooner?" The parts about email etiquette didn't help me as much, but they are still excellent advice. This book is well worth the attention you give to it, and I think the writer has great respect for the busy modern reader. Recommended!

Much is common sense, smack-yourself-in-the-forehead-why-didn't-I-realize-this-before? advice, but here it's concisely organized and geared toward truly improving your communication.

The pragmatic "Cheat Sheets" in the closing chapter give clear examples of the psychology, strategy, and style points she covers in the first three chapters and put you on an immediate path toward better email. This is the user manual that should have come with every email application.

This book helps to understand design and its many forms...

This book is one of the most comprehensible, intelligent, and clever books I've read in a long time.

Deyan Sudjic has an non-American perspective which is refreshing and presents a style devoid of capitalistic or consumerist undertones. Sudjic's statements are often quick and to the point and his citations from the works of prestigious designers and architects reinforce his perspectives. Sudjic cites John Berger's Ways of Seeing: Based on the BBC Television Series to support his assessments frequently and often. Sudjic identifies several attributes of design that seem to be overlooked or forgotten in modern products such as consistency, redundancy, and a lack of durability while proving that the product cycle of each new version of a device is too quick to ever foster a meaningful and lasting owner/object relationship. Overall, Sudjic does a great job of transposing design into commonly available forms and communicates what design is not.

I finished this in one day because I was enamored with it's brevity and precise thoughts. Sudjic's thoughts are clear and once you've completed this book, perhaps your thinking of what design is and isn't will be clear too....

Deyan Sudjic starts his book oblivious of the real world and in this book oblivious of the real world.

I searched this book for some sort of social value or usefulness. Unfortunately with the exception of a few buzz words and concepts that are secondary to what he's trying to say, there is nothing of any meaning in this book.

The author Deyan Sudjic starts his dissertation with the complaint; he bought an Apple Computer because it was cute and fruity. Later he finds that the cute and fruity is not functional. So he buys an Apple because it's black and flat. Later he finds that the black and flat doesn't mean it's functional.

Throughout the book he cites other people that buy things because they're fruity or black and flat. He makes the point that people are duped into things because they're fruity or black and flat such as money, cars, lamps, clothing, and whatnot that they are usable. He suggests that people collect things because they're either kitsch or have nostalgic value or have some other elusive quality that is irrelevant to the function.

He wraps up the book written in late 2008 with "what depression?" Everything seems as though it costs just the same, everybody still buys just the same stuff, and who would ever dream of a car company shutting down for 30 days over Christmas. This goes to show that he is still living and a fruity, flat black world.

We learn nothing of any value from this book. Even his speculation that the red around the radiator a black car is based on the red dot on a Walther PP K is stretching it a bit.

I thought this was a brilliant book. I borrowed it from a friend and now have ordered one of my own. The writing is witty and clear. The history is understandably compressed and excerpted but seems strong and analytic. And Sudjic's comprehension of how "high" design functions in contemporary society vis-a-vis art and the art world is exceptional. He skips over what I would think are some serious concerns and concepts in art, art criticism and art history, but as his focus is on design, that makes perfect sense. I'm not terribly well read in design, so perhaps all this is old news. But from what I have read and understood, Sudjic takes on a subject and clarifies it, turning it into a fine way to look at design, both in the world most of us function in and in the high end world of collectors and art museums.

Practice tests galore

This is a great LSAT practice guide. It contains 71 REAL and RECENT LSAT tests. Great resource and gives you plenty of practice. But, it does not explain strategies as to how to tackle different types of questions, you really need an additional study guide to learn the best strategies to tacking the test. I didn’t have any issues with the reading comprehension or logical reasoning sections, but I really needed extra help with the logic games sections. I got the Powerscore Logic Games Bible, an amazing resource and it really helped me get over the hump with the Logic Games. Powerscore also makes the same guides for the other sections of the LSAT if you have issues with those sections. Another great study aid that really helped me with the LSAT is Neutropix – Support Brain Function, Memory, Attention Span, Concentration & Clarity it is an amazing supplement that enhances your memory, focus and cognition, great for studying.

Essential for LSAT prep. The 10 most recent preptests.

If you're studying for the LSAT, you need to get this book. There's not much else to say. There are 71 official LSAT preptests. This book has the ten most recent preptests. The LSAT has changed over time, so these are the most representative tests you'll find, anywhere.

Other prep books often do not use real LSAT questions. This book has nothing but real LSAT questions. Practicing using the real thing is the best way to get ready for test day. Along with this book, you should also get:

10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests
The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests (Lsat Series)

Those two books contain LSAT preptests 29-38 and 52-61. Between the three books, you'll have 30 official practice exams, which is more than enough.

This is a great supplemental resource, but it shouldn't be used alone.

This book is a great resource, however, it is only effective once you know how to tackle the questions. When I purchased this book I was unaware of how to go about studying for the LSAT and I figured the best course of action was to expose myself to the actual test. Within a few days of using the book I realized that unless you know how to solve the problems presented, you're just spinning your wheels. I ended up buying the Powerscore LSAT Logic Games Bible which really helped me to understand the questions and how to solve them. Only then did this book become effective. Overall, I don't feel that anyone studying for the LSAT should buy this book alone and feel that they will be prepared for the exam.

In a class of its own ...

This is the first review I write on a chess book. The reason I write this review is that this book is, in my humble opinion, in a class of its own. The writer writes in a way that reminds me of writers like Chernev and Purdy; writers with a love for the game that shines through on every page of the books they have written. And the physical quality of the book is, like that of all the books from Quality Chess, outstanding. Like other primers on chess it teaches you the basics of the game, but after the first two chapters it gets really serious. From there it teaches you about subjects like tactics, strategy, techniques of calculation, combinations, and positional chess. When that was all that there was in this book it would already have been the best chess book that I have ever read, but besides all these topics it als contains three great chapters about the three stages of the game - the opening, middlegame, and endgame. Thanks to this book I look at the chessboard in a totally different way. I have read it once but to really let all the information sink in I have to read it at least two times more I think. I have read books from Seirawan, Silman, Lasker, and Capablanca. All good books, but this one is much better. Trust me on this one; if you are looking for one book that gives you a solid foundation in the game of chess, go for this one.

Destined to become a classic in The West

This was a classic chess training manual in the Soviet Union, and is now destined to become a classic in The West. The book is endorsed by three former World Chess Champions - Lasker, Karpov and Kasparov, as well as the eminent Russian chess trainer Mark Dvoretsky. While the book starts off treating elementary chess basics, it quickly becomes very challenging and advanced for the beginner-novice. In this respect it is really more suitable for the experienced player, intermediate level and above. It is designed to take one, with diligent (!) study, to at least Expert level, and perhaps beyond. If you don't yet have "Master" in your chess title, but have aspirations (or fantasies) in that direction, and are looking for a chess course to help you along the way, this would be a great one to consider. Kudos to Quality Chess for publishing this exceptional work.

For the beginner-novice player, two good choices for a first chess course would be "Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess: Basic to Advanced Strategies with America's Foremost Chess Instructor" by Bruce Pandolfini, and "Winning Chess Strategy for Kids" by Jeff Coakley. (Regardless of the title, the latter is not just for kids!)

Best Chess Book I Ever Read!

It was empowering and added muscle into my game--which became markedly stronger, including in my opponents' observations, This book breaks subject matter into logical sections and order. I love that much of the thinking process is shown in the writing or narrative, which helps the reader really understand where the teacher is coming from. Photos of variations are shown along with reasoning why specified alternative moves were not made instead. Although it doesn't go into detail to teach one to memorize a ton of variations, the book lays out a practical approach for planning, evaluating, etc. Most enlightening to me were the Strategy and Tactics sections, showing brilliant moves and highlighting psychology in the game.
