Amy Gillett has taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in Europe and the USA. Ms. Gillett holds a Bachelor’s degree in Slavic Languages and Literature and a Master’s in Russian and East European Studies, both from Stanford University, plus an MBA from Cornell. She is also the author of Speak Business English Like an American, More Speak English Like an American, Speak English Around Town, and Speak Better Business English and Make More Money. She was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal for her knowledge of American English slang and idioms.

Great book for ESL student!

I purchased this book because I want to improve my English skill and communication with the native speaker. Well, it is not a disappointing book. Turn out, it is a great source for ESL student like me to help me know when, how and where to use these idioms in the right situations. Moreover, the CD's pronunciation is perfect! Couldn't say anymore. If you practice these idioms daily, I am sure you would see how well it works. I would recommend to my friends and people whose English is the second language. Good luck!

Amy Gillett produces the content in an easy readable form for everybody. It's a great resource for those who want to know more about American lingo, and a good reference for those who are savvy but need a confirmation about a certain meaning from time to time.

About the Author

Lisa Fridsma has long loved the process of teaching others to use Adobe products. She has written, edited, and designed over thirty books in the Classroom in a Book series over the last decade and a half (including books on Photoshop and After Effects), going back to her time on-staff at Adobe. She’s currently the owner of Darlington Hill Productions (Informational illustrations and publishing). Lisa lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with her family and two above-average dogs.

Brie Gyncild aims to make technical information accessible to those who need it. Brie wrote The Photoshop CS5 Pocket Guide and The Photoshop Elements 8 Pocket Guide. Not bad, but not comprehensive-- and inferior to past books

Is this a bad book? No. But is it good? Is it complete? Is it comprehensive? Can you easily find specific information? Well... that's where the problems come in.

First of all, let me say this, so that anybody reading the review has some idea of where the reviewer is coming from. I used to use AE quite a bit several years ago, but I basically haven't touched it since at least 2014. So there's a LOT I don't remember too clearly about exactly how everything works, and it's a complex program, obviously. And just as obviously, there have been a lot of updates (even though the basics are the same.) I always used the Trish and Chris Meyer books in the past, but the last published edition was in 2010. So, as far as books... there aren't a lot of choices. There are a lot of random videos out there, and there's also lynda.com (more about that later), but there are just not many selections at all for the old school analog book.

First, the good: This book is well-written, and the examples are clear. The tutorials are fun and well-paced, also well-explained. The basics are... well, KIND OF basically covered (shape, text, animation, layers, masks, puppet tools, rotobrush, color correction, 3D features included the camera tracker, advanced editing, rendering.) The problem came in when I started thinking about how well this would all work for someone who was a REAL beginner rather than a past user who just hadn't picked up the new edition for a few years. Because the truth is, the basics aren't really covered, and here's the proof.

Look at an old copy of the last Trish and Chris Meyer 2010 book, *Creating Motion Graphics With After Effects.* I have a copy on the desk right now. It's 752 pages. The Classroom in a Book is 399 pages. Yep-- 752 pages to cover the OLDER version, and 388 pages to cover the NEWER version, with all the added features. Lots and lots and lots of the essentials have been cut out. Look for a list of keyboard shortcuts-- it's not there. Look for the older, much longer chapters going into detail about fundamental concepts like layers and keyframes and editing-- not there. Look for xyzabc etc etc etc... not there. In 388 pages, it CAN'T be there.

So why not just go to a source like lynda . com, you ask? I've had that membership for a long time, and I think I might even renew it again. THAT is where Trish and Chris Meyer went, and their instructional videos are there. But here's the problem with a video lesson format: you're tied to the pace and teaching methods decided on by the people who *made* the videos. There is no reference manual. And that's what the Classroom in a Book desperately needed to be. I do not have a lot of patience for going through videos and spending literally ten or twenty times the amount of time I would spend to look up something in a true reference book. Sometimes, we need specific pieces of information easily and quickly accessible and put together in an understandable way rather than having to sit through several twenty minute videos to try to figure out something very specific that we want to do. (The Adobe help and user forums are absolutely not a solution either, which is too bad.) What really needed to happen is for Trish and Chris Meyer to keep coming out with books, whether in print or online format. That's really what they should do-- online editions of updated AE books-- instead of 100% sticking to videos That is the strongest aspect of the Classroom book, btw-- when you buy it, you can go online to peachpit press and use the online version. But I don't think it's enough. I haven't decided yet if I'll be returning this book, but that might happen, even though it isn't exactly bad... it's just not good enough.

Does not cover the basics very well
Does not contain comprehensive information about the nuts and bolts of AE in the way that the Trish and Chris Meyer books did
Not a reference book, which it needed to be
Not long enough
Emphasis on tutorials rather than constructing the "building blocks" of the basic knowledge you need to use AE as a tool.
WAY too expensive for what it is.
Overall, this isn't a bad book to have in your library... but I would seriously also buy Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, 5th Edition. Even though it doesn't have info on the most recent updates, it comprehensively covers the basics, and the new CiaB does not. For $56.50, the new book needs to offer more than it does.

Great for a beginner and an awesome reference for the experienced.

My fiance & myself are freelance designers currently working for several companies & organizations. I cannot overstate how important understanding & performing in the motion graphics department is. So we got this book and neither of us can put it down so far lol. We are already pretty good with After Effects so we went ahead and read through the first couple of chapters pretty quickly. However, nothing beats learning the formality of how it all works and really understanding your tools and exactly how capable this software actually is. This book is great for a beginner and an awesome reference for the experienced.

Meet the Sample Apps
This small suite of sample web applications is offered to you as a way to illustrate use of the Twitter API, the collection of web service methods that bring Twitter data into third-party programming. These applications explore some common reasons to access the API:
Administration Tool
A master account is needed to do things like send direct messages and conduct data mining on the backend. Unlike most of the user-driven tools, the master account must be available even when the account holder (you) isn’t around to log in. This simple tool allows the master account’s password to be saved to the database in a safe way. Only you will use this tool. In fact, without knowing the password attached to the master Twitter account, others shouldn’t be able to do anything with this application.
Tweet Publisher
This application is a straightforward status updater. To publish to your own timeline, enter your Twitter account information and a short 140-character message. After doing so, you will see a link to the new tweet.
Auto Tweet
Each member account can be associated with a single RSS or Atom feed, from which a new tweet will be automatically generated. There is an automated task associated with this application that checks each registered feed for new content in six-hour cycles and posts the most recent article.
Tweet Broadcast
This is an aggregation tool, where you can collect daily tweets from a handful of other Twitter members into a single RSS item. An RSS feed is generated that contains information for up to 20 days of activity, collected by an automated task that checks for new tweets once a day. Each member account can have one aggregation feed.
Tweet Alert
Tracking tweets based on keywords is made easy with the Twitter search API. Each member can list a few keywords in Tweet Alert and receive a notification when any of those terms appears in a public tweet. The content scans are performed every 15 minutes. If a match is found—and the member is following your master Twitter account—a direct message is sent to that member with a link to the search results.
Network Viewer
Probably the most useful among the suite of tools, this web application allows Twitter members to see the profile images of all the people they’re following. Private accounts are outlined in red, and (in most modern browsers) mousing over each picture reveals additional detail about that member.

About the Author

Kevin Makice is currently a Ph.D. student at the Indiana University School of Informatics, the first such doctoral program in the nation. His research interests center around local use of technology and the application of relational psychology to complexity and design. Prior to completing his Masters of Science in Human-Computer Interaction in 2006, Kevin was the primary Internet programmer for TicketsNow, a clearinghouse for sports, theatre, and entertainment tickets available in the secondary market. Along with three others, he won the CHI 2005 student competition by designing a concept for ad-hoc volunteering system for elderly residents in assisted-living centers. Past research includes political wikis, tangible interfaces for children's games, machinima, and network analysis of ball movement in basketball. Much of his blogging and academic efforts over the past year has focused on exploring Twitter as a means of community building.

Good, but could be better

This book provides a nice overview of the Twitter API with a few examples, but the organization of the book could make learning a little more engaging. There is a lot of up-front description of the disparate features, with no working examples presented until the latter chapters of the book.

I'm also not sure if the author had a clear idea of the intended audience. It seems odd that there are things like detailed walkthroughs of how to set up a Twitter account, but no thorough discussion of data parsing.

An excellent book on working with the Twitter API

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service where users send and receive very small text-based posts. The short length of these messages and the simplicity of the service causes the message traffic to be labeled descriptively as tweets. However, even a very simple messaging service requires programming these days, and that is where this very accessible book comes in.

This book is an introduction to build web applications via the Twitter API. This book has three main parts: an overview of the Twitter social issues; background information on the languages and environment you need to create your applications; and finally code for sample applications that will get you started. Anyone familiar with computer programming and web applications should be able to just read the PHP scripts used to create the sample applications and understand how the underlying syntax works.

The reader needs a basic understanding of how applications are built and hosted on the Web. However, strangely enough, you don't need to be a professional programmer. The XHTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL code necessary for building the example applications will be provided and explained.

Chapter 1, "Hello Twitter", is not your usual intro chapter on a basic Hello Twitter program. Instead it is a chapter on the culture and social aspects of Twitter. Anyone can pick up this chapter and understand what Twitter is and where it is coming from in a social and historical context.

Chapter 2, "Twitter Applications", reviews third-party Twitter apps. The purpose, however, is not to present you with a directory of the world's best Twitter applications. Instead, the purpose of this list is to show you some of the things that can be done with a web application using the Twitter API. These applications may provide some inspiration for your own projects.

Chapter 3, "Web Programming Basics", provides an overview of the basic knowledge and tools needed to create the applications described later in the book. Although the Twitter API can be used to create desktop and mobile applications as well, this book focuses on the web platform built with PHP and MySQL.

Chapter 4, "Meet the Twitter API", introduces you to the building blocks for your future application - the ways that you can send commands in Twitter. This chapter describes these specific request methods available through the Twitter API. Each section, presents one of the 40 existing API methods and explain what is needed to get data from Twitter using that method. These 40 methods are grouped into seven categories: Publishing, Information Stream, Follow Network, Communication, Member Account, API Administration, and Search.

Chapter 5, "Meet the Output", takes a close look at the information Twitter sends to you in response to your requests for data. It goes hand in hand with the previous chapter on commands.

Chapter 6, "Application Setup", shows what you might find under the hood of those Twitter applications mentioned in chapter two by having you build one of your own. In this chapter, you prepare your web environment to run a suite of sample web applications built to illustrate different interactions with the API. The setup includes establishing a Twitter account, creating tables in a MySQL database, and making a directory for included files. Chapters 7 and 8 contain descriptions of the applications and automated tasks

Chapter 7, "Sample Applications", is where you examine the sample web applications that can serve as a base for your own projects. There are seven of them that all illustrate a different aspect of the use of the Twitter API. Detailed code is included.

Chapter 8, "Automated Tasks", examines the code that performs the behind-the-scenes operations that give the tools their functionality. As in the previous chapter, the descriptions of the code in this chapter build on each other. The first application will be discussed in more detail than the later ones because they share a lot of code structure and logic.

The appendix provides a basic look at the Twitter API, listing the method path, whether it requires authentication, if it is charged against your rate limit, the HTTP method type, and any required and optional parameters.

This first book (as far as I know) on the Twitter API is a very good one, and highly recommended for those of you who are interested in writing your own applications.

Interesting Hodgepodge

The author did a pretty good job of explaining the Twitter API, some basic Web programming techniques (PHP, CSS), a whirlwind tour of current and past Twitter-related websites and some more or less useful sample applications.

However, the editor at O'Reilly should have talked the author into whipping the book into better shape before publishing it. First, in a book that has more than 400 pages on a pretty simple API, one would at least expect a section that explains how Twitter actually works. A sample flow of messages, responses, direct messages with illustrating screen shots. A bit of history maybe? Was Twitter like that from the beginning? What changed? When? Also, the publisher should have looked at the index and said: "Dude, this is okay for an auto-generated index, but if you want people to actually use the book to find something, put some more effort into it". Again, not the authors fault, that's the editor's responsibility.

I'm giving 4 stars because the author's writing is solid, but, man, a big minus point for O'Reilly to let this slip into the open without stricter review.

45 Beautiful Designs based on Dragon Age – printed one side of the page

This is a gorgeous illustrated coloring book with iconic scenes from Dragon Age. The designs are quite detailed and some contain intricate and small areas to color. You don't have to be a fan of the series to absolutely enjoy coloring these beautiful designs but fans will almost certainly want to add this book to their collection (we bought two, one for me and one for my husband.)

The designs include the characters I hoped to see from the game. The illustrations are by a group of artists (Pablo Churin, Juan Frigeri, Gabrield Guzman, Fernando Melek and Facundo Percio.) Their styles mesh well and provide a well-thought out and beautifully put together “story”. The designs are on the front of the page with quotes on the back of the page. The quote applicable to a design is on the opposite facing page to the design (left hand with design on the right hand side.)

This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:

Designs merge into the binding area

I could get the book to lay fairly flat for coloring by breaking/creasing the spine.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page. If you use this medium, I suggest using a blotter page to keep ink from seeping through. I use card stock but a couple of pages of paper should work as well.

Water-based markers, India ink pens and gel pens do not bleed through the page. Some do leave light, colorful shadows on the back of the page.

Colored pencils worked well with this paper. It has good “tooth” and allowed for applying layers of the same color to get rich pigment. I could also layer multiple colors well and I could blend both oil and wax based pencils easily with a pencil style blending stick.

The artwork is fantastic and consistent in style and quality

The artwork is fantastic and consistent in style and quality. Some of the characters do look a little off (Alistair and Zevran come to mind), but overall, the lineart is clean and perfect for coloring. I'm partial to using markers for coloring books, so I appreciate the one-sided artwork faced with a quote on paper with a decent thickness. The companions (and advisors) from the main games make at least one appearance; even DLC Sebastian shows up. DA2 does seem to get more attention overall, but I think it's decently balanced.

I'm deducting one star, however, because the cover on my copy is defective. It looks like it wasn't cut properly and ended up getting bent further as a result.

Awesomely perfect

For someone who likes to color for relaxation, and loves Dragon Age, this is perfect! I was pleasantly surprised by the spread each main character gets from Origins to Inquisition and quotes from the characters too! The pages are thicker than your normal coloringbook and smooth, so I think markers could be used potentially, but pages would probably warp with too much liquid like watercolor or ink. My coloring method of choice are prismacolor pencils. Great artwork! Thanks, Bioware!
