Blade lives

Blade is an ultra rarity in the comic world. The only time he's ever really worked in comics is when Marv Wolfman created him in the 70's for the original Tomb of Dracula, yet the character has translated to a trilogy of films (ranging from excellent to average) with Wesley Snipes in the title role, and since then, a number of new Blade comics have been started; all of which winding up getting cancelled. Things appear to be different this time around, with promising screenwriter Marc Guggenheim (Wolverine) at the helm and Howard Chaykin (American Century, Bite Club) providing the artwork. Make no mistake that there's nothing bad at all about this new take on Blade, which finds the seemingly invincible vampire hunter doing what he does best, while flashbacks to his past are shown intermediately as well. As a whole, Guggenheim's story works, but the breakneck pace of his storytelling makes it easy to get lost in the action. There's appearances from Spider-Man, Dr. Doom, Wolverine, Morbius the Living Vampire, and even Dracula himself to boot as Blade runs afoul of vamps, body jumping demons, and even S.H.I.E.L.D. as well in the midst of the Civil War. Howard Chaykin's artwork however is the definite lowpoint of Undead Again, as the veteran writer/artist appears to be on somewhat of a downward slide, but hopefully, this isn't the case considering the body of work he has under his belt. All in all, there's nothing really special about this first TPB of the new Blade series, but considering what's come before it, this new take is quite refreshing.

Best Blade in years

I've read several different incarnations of Blade from the early 90's onward, and this series is by far the best. It combines the best aspects of the Blade character from the earlier comics with the best aspects from Wesley Snipes' screen portrayal to create the ultimate Blade. The storyline and dialogue are great, and there's plenty of suckhead killing action to satisfy fans of the films. I love the artwork as well, just be warned that the cover art looks completely different from the art inside, although both are awesome. I highly recommend buying this and Vol.2 to finish the series. It's a shame it only ran 12 issues. Overall, it's the best Blade in years and a great read.

BLADE the vampire hunter

This is one of the best stories I've read featuring the character Blade, but the action is kind of minimal. I had no idea Blade could be so versatile. He runs afoul of Dr. Doom, Wolverine and Spiderman himself and by the end of it all finds out who his real father is: a ruthless vampire named Cross. A nice sequence featuring Blade's mother giving birth and the now infamous Deacon Frost interrupting the birth to bite his mother.

Very good, but only buy it if you are a blade fan.

A very useful text about a truly fascinating saint

This book presents, in English translation, three different lives of the fascinating late Roman saint, Simeon the Stylite. Simeon was the original "pillar saint"--a type of Eastern ascetic who took up his station between heaven and earth on a high pillar and never came down. In Simeon's case, he was atop the pillar for nearly 40 years!

The accounts in this book offer an interesting glimpse into this form of Christian asceticism that, frankly, strikes the modern reader as bizarre. Some of the anecdotes about Simeon recorded in these lives are awful--in the literal sense of that word--meaning that they fill the reader with a sense of awe that a man could actually suffer so much. He was afflicted by horrifying illnesses and his flesh eaten by worms. Because he was always standing, his feet became ulcerated. Yet, through all of this, Simeon trusted in God and never even considered coming down from the pillar even when urged to do so by his disciples. However, when ordered by a bishop to come down as a test of his obedience, Simeon showed himself willing. (He was stopped before he could do so.)

Because Simeon was such a holy man, he was able to work tremendous miracles through the power of God. Simeon's biographers offer a litany of dozens of such miracles--from curing cripples, to bringing rain, to saving Christians in distress hundreds of miles away.

This bulk of this book is made up of a translation of the anonymous Syriac life of St. Simeon which was written right after his death. It also contains two much shorter lives written during the life of the saint or immediately thereafter--that of Theodoret of Cyrrhus and of Antonius.

My only problem with the work concerns the introduction which is lengthy, highly theoretical, and dense. For a general reader or someone who wants to read the work as a spiritual exercise, it can be offputting. The author also goes on an extended tangent in the introduction comparing the ascetic practice of Simeon with that of the so-called "phallus climbers" who existed in Syria several hundred years before Simeon's day. The author concludes that Simeon almost certainly had never heard of this pagan practce. So the question is, why discuss it at all, then, beyond a passing mention?

Overall, however, this book is good and useful for comparing the Lives of St. Simeon on a scholarly level and putting them all together in one package. If you're looking for a life of St. Simeon Stylites to read for devotional purposes, however, I suggest The Life of Saint Simeon Stylites: A Translation of the Syriac Text in Bedjan's Acta Martyrum Et Sanctorum. Though an older translation, this work has the virtue of presenting in English the most complete recension of the Syriac Life.

An indispensable guide to the pharmaceuticals used in a clinical setting. A must for any clinical health care worker, especially those who dispense on doctor's orders. Each drug lists type of drug, family, class, type of patient who might receive drug, off-label use of the drug, form in which drug is manufactured, how to dispense, cautions, contraindications...all in a simple, easy-to-read format. Expensive, but you get what you pay for!!!

Great for nursing students!

I am a nursing student and constantly need to reference a drug guide. This book is perfect because it explains the drug, what class it's from, nursing considerations, how it works, dosages, black box warnings, what you need to assess the patient for before administering, etc... I recommend this book to all my peers!

My daughter is taking a CMA course and needed info for class not in her class book. I found Mosby,s and ordered her the newest edition and she finds every thing she need for class. Its good to be able to go on line and find exactly what she needs. Of course it is also good for me because I don't have to go looking and drive allover. I just order and it is delivered. Very Useful Sample Programs

As an embedded programmer, I bought this book for the sample programs to show me different, and possibly better, ways of programming the PIC microcontrollers. I was not disappointed; the book contains dozens and dozens of sample programs, in Assembly and C, for almost all of the peripherals available for the PIC18 series. However, there was no information on programming for the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus.

While this book appears to be aimed at beginners, I think you must be somewhat familiar with the PIC18 series in order separate out the many errors and mistakes from the wealth of truly useful information.

Warning! This book contains many inaccuracies. I've only finished the first two chapters but I already have serious concerns about using this book. As someone who has worked with PIC microcontrollers for over twelve years, I was taken aback by the fictitious history presented. About the only things that are accurate here are the dates.
Terminology is sometimes inaccurate (the term file register references each eight bit RAM location within the data memory). I have never seen any Microchip document that refers to built-in EEPROM data memory as RAM.
I'll reserve final judgment until I've finished reading (I'll submit and update), however I thought persons with less experience should be warned.
