Didn't Work as a Pain Reliever but Great for Hair and Nails

After a failed back surgery, a neighbor recommended MSM for my severe back pain because I won't use narcotic pain medication. I have a lot of allergies and sensitivities, so I wanted more information before I started ingesting something that might cause an allergic reaction. I am allergic to sulfur drugs, and MSM is a sulfur derivative. But after reading the book, I learned that MSM is not the same as the sulfur prescriptions that I had an allergic reaction to. I also learned that MSM is supposed to be effective for relieving many types of ailments. I was skeptical about a product that claims it can cure or treat almost everything. But I was suffering from chronic, debilitating pain, so I started taking MSM. It's supposed to reduce inflammation which causes of pain, but it didn't help my pain. That might just be because I have herniated discs that are pinching the sciatic nerve. However, my boyfriend swears by it, and claims it relieves his various aches and pains. The one thing that I do love about MSM, though, is that it makes my hair grow really fast and more hair is growing in thicker, even in places where it used to be thinning. Also, it makes my finger nails grow really fast, and they are stronger, without the ridges I used to have in my nails. So the sulfur in the MSM has a good cosmetic effect for me, but no medicinal benefit. It did not relieve my pain. Nonetheless, I have been taking it daily because I like the effect on my hair and nails. The book is good because it tells you how to take MSM. You won't have any adverse effect if you overdose on it, but if you take too much, you'll get loose stools. You have to start with a really small amount and gradually work up to a larger dosage. Your body will let you know when you're reached the maximum amount that you can take on a daily basis. I've been taking it every day for almost four years now. I buy it at the animal feed store. One time I was out of state and tried to buy it at the same chain store where I usually shop in my state. The price was considerably higher. I asked the store manager if the price was marked wrong on the product. He told me that he would lower the price for me, and the reason they charge so much for it there is because people use it as a component to make illegal street drugs. One last thing--it tastes terrible. I heat about an eighth of a cup of water in the microwave, then stir in the MSM until it dissolves, hold my nose and chug it. After taking it every day for a while, I wasn't bothered by the taste any more. But if I stop taking it for a while and then start using it again, the taste is as bad as when I originally started using it.

MIRACLES STILL HAPPEN!

This book was a life saver for me. I have had chronic back pain caused by a fall, for many years. I had been scheduled for surgery, but I have had surgeries for this in the past, and they did not relieve the pain. This surgery had the potential of leaving me paralyzed from the neck down, so I figured I had nothing to lose by getting the book. The information was very clear and easy to understand and offered me hope. I ordered from one of the pure MSM suppliers recommended and within days of taking a pretty high dosage, MSM became the miracle I needed. I cancelled the surgery and just keep taking the MSM. I take a much lower dose now that things are under control, but it the pain comes back, I just up the dose for a few days again. And, this was over 3 years ago. My recommendation is read the book, and try it, you have little to lose, but perhaps a lot to gain.

Great gift idea for anyone suffering with chronic pain

This is a very helpful book. I was blessed to read it and I have benefited greatly by taking MSM. I have less pain in my joints and more energy. Also, I gave this book as a gift to my father in law who suffers from chronic shoulder pain. I packaged it up with some Jarrow MSM powder + Solaray Vitamin C. He loved it and he's been taking it daily.

a jejune effort

I have an old paperback edition of the Penguin Dictionary of Geology, originally published in 1972; I don't know when my copy was printed. It's showing its age and I thought I would replace it. Glad I didn't pitch it before this one arrived. The old one was full of illustrations and many of the entries were fairly long. I've spent a lot of hours just browsing through it. The new one has no illustrations and the entries are as short as they could get away with. I'll hang onto it; in 42 years a lot of new terminology has appeared but this is not a book I will pick up and read just for the joy of it. My advice: buy this one if you must and keep an eye out for older editions.

A Must Read

If you are a young adult facing the crushing news of a cancer diagnosis, you have to read this book. A big obstacle for many young adults that are going through cancer treatments is a feeling of isolation. Upon reading this book, you will quickly understand the fears, struggles and pain that each and everyone of these people felt when they heard the words, you have cancer. As you get into their stories more you will see, in the written word, what strength looks like. If your day needs a boost and you feel that you are stuck in a woes me mood, read these stories and you will gain inspiration from these people. I had the privilege of meeting all these amazing young adult cancer survivors and was honored that they allowed me to share their stories in this book. The stories are their own, written by each and every contributor with no changes - these are their feelings, emotions, attitudes and words. This book will be a valuable resource to other young adults as they embark on their own cancer journeys.

Such a work deserves - and has duly received - ample critical attention from scholars on both sides of the Pacific, resulting in a plethora of secondary literature, to which contribution of a truly original piece of scholarship constitutes no small challenge. Professor Reider's study not only fills numerous lacunae, but presents many interpretations that will be new to English-speaking audiences. Among these are her astute analysis of the role of "obsession" (shunen) in the stories, and her recognition of Akinari's bunjin portrayal of an ideal world in which social justice ultimately prevails as mirroring a strong social consciousness. Throughout, Professor Reider's arguments are presented in cogent terms. Tzvetan Todorov maintains that literature of the fantastic - which includes tales of the supernatural - succeeds as art only to the extent that it is able to present events and characters to the reader suspended in a state of uncertainty whether all is a product of illusion or of reality, for "once we choose one answer or the other, we leave the fantastic for a neighboring genre, the uncanny or the marvelous." The attainment of this state is no mean stylistic feat for a writer, but its efficacy depends on a readership capable of entertaining such a temporary suspension of judgment. It must be a readership whose imagination is hobbled neither by a crude credulousness nor by a sterile positivism.

One of the best resources on kaidan ever published

I first encountered these articles in the academic journal of Asian Folklore Studies, when I was writing my Master's thesis on yurei, the Japanese ghost. The two main articles, "The Emergence of Kaidan-shu" and "The Appeal of Kaidan" formed the backbone of my research, and I am thrilled to see them collected here in book form.

Noriko T. Reider probably knows more about kaidan, Japanese strange stories, than any other person around. When I was doing research for my MA, I read through literally hundreds of books, both in English and Japanese, and it was Reider's articles that I kept coming back too. She has a way of writing that is concise and readable, academic without drowning in its own language like books like Civilization and Monsters: Spirits of Modernity in Meiji Japan which is so dense as to be almost unreadable.

"Tales of the Supernatural in Early Modern Japan, Kaidan, Akinari, Ugetsu Monogatari" has four chapters, each with a different focus. "The Emergence of Kaidan-shu" is a history lesson on from its beginnings in early folktales to the kaidan-boom of the Edo period. Next, "Belief in the Supernatural in the Edo Period" discusses the attitudes towards the supernatural in Edo period Japan and how they created the atmosphere in which the kaidan genre could arise. "The Appeal of Kaidan" discusses people's fascination with gory and grotesque stories, and what is it that drives people to tales of the unknown. The last chapter, "Akinari and Kaidan Ugetsu Monogatari" discusses in depth Ueda Akinari, author of Tales of Moonlight and Rain, possibly the best kaidan book ever written.

While the pure history of the first few chapters is interesting, Reider's focus on the concept of obsession and the role it plays in Akinari's celebrated book brings her collection to a higher level. She clearly has a passion for Akinari's work, and it shows as she dissects the nine tales in Akinari's book, looking into the driving nature of each character to focus on and pursue what obsesses them.

There is a dearth of good material writing on the fascinating world of Japanese kaidan, and it is a real shame. But of what is available, Reider's work is definitely the cream of the crop, and if I was a professor grading a paper that discussed Japanese supernatural in any way, and Reider's name and "Tales of the Supernatural in Early Modern Japan, Kaidan, Akinari, Ugetsu Monogatari" was not in the bibliography, you would need a pretty good excuse to get a passing grade.

Not only because they were good friends but because they shared an astonishing good life in the C�te d'azur in the best of moments for Picasso's creative activity. And he contacted all of his best friends. For he was a surrealistic painter as well and he knew about all the art intrigues at the time. You can get every detail on Picasso's life and his way of living, all of his tips, even the cars he had, his life with his relatives who came to visit him.
