Some Exercises Seem Helpful - BUT USE WITH CAUTION!!!
By Ben Franklin
I think there is something to the techniques described in this book. I've been using them for just over one month. However, I would caution against many of the more agressive techniques promoted. In particular, the "eye rolling" and "clock rotations". These two methods seem to put stress on the retina and I would not recommend them. I began to see an increase in the amount of floaters in my eyes, which straining the retina can do. I would suggest streching the out eye muscles only within your useful visible range and not trying to roll your eyes at all. You can get the same effect with a more careful approach. I only share this out of concern that people might damage one of their most valuable assets - their eyes. I think the Pumping exercise is especially helpful to my vision and incorporates what you normally would use your eyes for.

Be careful of which reviews you believe
By Tiff
I'm sorry to say that this didn't work for me. I did the exercises for about 6 months. I was so excited because I self diagnosed my own eyes using eye charts and measuring how far I could see until things became blurry and I really felt like I made a lot of progress. I used to be only able to see 3 inches away. Now I can see 4 inches away from my face. Yesterday I was excited to go to the optometrist so I could get evidence of my improvement. Without even looking at my previous prescription (it was a new optometrist), we did the eye test and she handed me a prescription that was exactly the same as the one I had 6 months ago. Needless to say, I was disillusioned. I wish this worked for me and I have no idea why it worked for the people in those video testimonials, but I learned that there is a psychological factor behind diagnosing yourself and I would recommend only heeding reviews that saw an improvement after having actual checkups with an optometrist.

Has helped my vision when diligent with the exercises
By celeste
I enjoy simple and easy remedies to issues, and this book is one of them for me.

As with anything that usually is beneficial, the best way to get results is with regularity. Whether or not the exercises will need to be a lifelong practice is still to be determined. But what I have observed, with the time I used some of the exercises that I found beneficial, I can have vision improvements immediately afterwards.

I basically went through all of the exercises and then determined which ones seemed to work best. So those were the ones I continued doing. It did not take but a few repetitions for each -- nothing strenuous. One of the basic results for me was clarity with seeing smaller type in the distance or images without squinting. And also, seeing small type with books at a normal distance without squinting. I have come to notice that one eye is better with close up and the other eye with distance -- which makes for an unusual viewing combination at times. However, I get more cooperative vision instead of opposing vision with the exercises.

It also helped my mom who dish washing soap issue that now resembles macular degeneration (as far as optometrist are concerned). Although there was not problem with her vision until an undiluted soap bubble popped into her eye as she was pouring soap into the dishwater. It has appeared to resemble more of a trauma to the eye, and has improved gradually over the years, but is not completely remedied.

I wondered if this could help her vision since now she was also using her other eye more strenuously to compensate for the injured one. So I took her through some of the exercises. Near the end of the book is a series of lines of type in a variety of sizes from large to micro (really small). They do not repeat the lines of type, so that they cannot be anticipated. I had found that I could read the smallest line after the exercises and without it, I stopped somewhere well before that size -- so it was one of the tests of whether the exercises were helpful for me.

I took her from the point at what she would think was too small to read (about 1/3 of the page to the end). She would read a line and was surprised because automatically she would have thought by the size, it would not be readable normally. She read it. I kept saying, "Try the next one," and on and on until she had completed the entire list. The last two lines she missed a word in each but otherwise, she read through the entire list.

The exercises have been helpful and I will work at becoming more diligent with doing them to see if they can have a prolonged effect, or if it is another routine to continue.

One of the best things about the exercises, is that they can be done easily while standing in line at a store, sitting at home, relaxing. As long as there are signs or items with words that can be read at a distance it can be used for exercise. One just takes moving the eyes center focus to outward as if moving around a clock, and the other is similar to what people used to do with moving the finger away from the eyes and bringing it close until focus is lost.

These are some of simple exercises that have helped me achieve better vision results. If an exercise made my eyes feel strained or left me dizzy, then these are not the ones I use.

From the Inside Flap

Companies enter into mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in order to grow their businesses. This seems like an obvious point, but a look through the annals of M&A reveals that companies and executives disregard this basic principle surprisingly often. Whether through faulty analysis, poor organizational decision-making, or getting caught up in the heat of the deal, even the best businesses and their leaders find ways to fumble these high-stakes transactions. Yet many M&A debacles could have been avoided through a better understanding of exactly why past deals have and haven't worked.

Maximizing Corporate Value through Mergers and Acquisitions cuts through the hype surrounding M&A to take a calm, considered look at the many strategic growth options available to businesses. Utilizing the large body of research in this field, author Patrick Gaughan walks readers through both the risks and the benefits associated with different kinds of deals. In so doing, he offers a comprehensive treatment of key factors—including market, industry, and psychological considerations—and their role in successful and unsuccessful outcomes.

A vital handbook for professionals considering strategic growth, Maximizing Corporate Value through Mergers and Acquisitions provides sound guidance and illustrative case studies on topics including:

  • Ensuring that M&A is part of an overall growth strategy
  • Understanding and achieving synergies
  • M&A for diversification
  • M&A for horizontal and vertical integration
  • M&A in emerging markets
  • The impact of valuation and premiums on deals
  • "Deal reversal" strategies to mitigate damage when deals don't deliver as anticipated
  • Pursuing organic growth instead of growth through M&A
  • Alternatives to M&A such as joint ventures or strategic alliances
  • And more

An essential reference for boards, executives, advisors, and other practitioners, Maximizing Corporate Value through Mergers and Acquisitions offers an up-to-date guide for navigating the complex yet rewarding world of M&A.

From the Back Cover

Discover a solid, strategic foundation for analyzing and evaluating mergers and acquisitions

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) offer high returns, but at the cost of high risks that are often hidden until after the deal has closed. Understanding the wide range of growth options available—as well as which have worked best in the past, and which have failed—can help all those involved in M&A create outcomes with long-term, sustainable gains. Maximizing Corporate Value through Mergers and Acquisitions offers a comprehensive resource for analyzing the costs and benefits of any given deal.

This guide delves into the large (though often underutilized) body of research on successful and unsuccessful M&As to examine factors for both success and failure. Drilling down beyond superficial considerations, the coverage reveals the contradictions and buried time bombs in various deals that can easily slip by decision-makers, resulting in billion-dollar mistakes. Author Patrick Gaughan—a respected consultant to leading corporations—presents frank discussion of specific M&A flops with a critical look at the poor managerial planning and strategies that led to these failures, plus expert know-how to help your business dodge such bullets in the future, with discussion on:

  • Merger growth strategy
  • Valuation
  • Corporate governance
  • Vertical and horizontal growth
  • Emerging markets
  • Joint ventures and strategic alliances
  • Downsizing and divestment
  • Strategic alternatives to M&A
  • And more

Filled with detailed case studies, Maximizing Corporate Value through Mergers and Acquisitions provides a complete treatment of the risks, consequences, and benefits of various M&A deals.

I had to buy this book for an MBA class. It was a very frustrating read. There were NUMEROUS grammatical errors - some of them were even comical (ex. using the word "entree" instead of "entry" twice on page 127)!

The writing style, sentence structure, and grammar were so bad that I had a hard time focusing on the content. I would be embarrassed if I were the publisher - John Wiley & Sons.

I would strongly not recommend this book.

The writing in this book is awful for a textbook. The book is also full of more opinions rather than fact and research. I agree with the previous post, the grammar is atrocious and it was hard to concentrate on the content that was there to find.

The essential introduction to the theory and application of linear models—now in a valuable new edition

Since most advanced statistical tools are generalizations of the linear model, it is neces-sary to first master the linear model in order to move forward to more advanced concepts. The linear model remains the main tool of the applied statistician and is central to the training of any statistician regardless of whether the focus is applied or theoretical. This completely revised and updated new edition successfully develops the basic theory of linear models for regression, analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, and linear mixed models. Recent advances in the methodology related to linear mixed models, generalized linear models, and the Bayesian linear model are also addressed.

Linear Models in Statistics, Second Edition includes full coverage of advanced topics, such as mixed and generalized linear models, Bayesian linear models, two-way models with empty cells, geometry of least squares, vector-matrix calculus, simultaneous inference, and logistic and nonlinear regression. Algebraic, geometrical, frequentist, and Bayesian approaches to both the inference of linear models and the analysis of variance are also illustrated. Through the expansion of relevant material and the inclusion of the latest technological developments in the field, this book provides readers with the theoretical foundation to correctly interpret computer software output as well as effectively use, customize, and understand linear models.

This modern Second Edition features:

  • New chapters on Bayesian linear models as well as random and mixed linear models

  • Expanded discussion of two-way models with empty cells

  • Additional sections on the geometry of least squares

  • Updated coverage of simultaneous inference

The book is complemented with easy-to-read proofs, real data sets, and an extensive bibliography. A thorough review of the requisite matrix algebra has been addedfor transitional purposes, and numerous theoretical and applied problems have been incorporated with selected answers provided at the end of the book. A related Web site includes additional data sets and SAS code for all numerical examples.

Linear Model in Statistics, Second Edition is a must-have book for courses in statistics, biostatistics, and mathematics at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also an invaluable reference for researchers who need to gain a better understanding of regression and analysis of variance.

Good (not great) explanations, poor proofs, decent coverage
By Leicester Dedlock
Second year Ph.D. student at Iowa State University

This book was used in one of my Master's level courses. The book was appropriate. There are easier textbooks out there which may be more appropriate for undergraduates (although juniors and seniors would probably be able to handle this one) and there are more rigorous textbooks out there which may be more appropriate for Ph.D. level classes.

Omissions:
This book provides decent coverage of linear regression and ANOVA models, primarily from a theoretical matrix-based perspective, but it only covers extensions such as generalized linear models rather briefly. Topics such as GLM and logistic regression are important (even if they're not "pure" linear models topics), so the limited coverage was disappointing (which may be why my teacher required FOUR textbooks for the class). I was also disappointed with the limited coverage of diagnostics. It is discussed, but only briefly and it omits some important diagnostics. Also, though it isn't totally atypical for a linear models book that doesn't include "R" in the title, it doesn't integrate computing. This book also lacks anything related to non-parametrics.

Explanations and examples:
Aside from what I mentioned in 'omissions', this book covers just about everything else you would expect from an introductory linear models textbook (including a surprising long review of linear algebra) and it does so fairly well. The explanations are generally clear, but not always crystal clear. Graduate students should be able to follow it fairly easily, but undergraduates who don't yet have a strong statistics and mathematics background may have some difficulty, but I doubt too much. The book also does a good job at mixing mathematical rigor with simple explanations in plain English. However, it's a theory book, so don't expect to attain a full laymen's understanding from this book. What you mostly get is the dirty details explained rather well. Of further note, the examples in the book generally do a good job at furthering understanding of the material.

Proofs:
Very, very bad. For many theorems they simply tell you what book to look up the proof in. At least they're nice enough to give you a page number. Also, they over-cite theorems. Many times they simply list some theorems for which the proof would be derived and they don't even bother explaining how to piece these things together.
Theorem Z's proof:
This result follows from Theorem X and Theorem Y.
Theorem X's proof:
See Graybill (1976, p. 126).
Theorem Y's proof:
This result follows from Theorem A, Theorem B and Wang and Chow(1994, pp. 161-163).

Wow, how helpful.

Exercises:
Overall, they are relevant proofs of varying difficulty. They mix easy problems with hard ones, but I would say that problems are not often overly difficult. Most exercises are perfect for graduate students and an instructor could pick out a fair number of problems that are appropriate for undergraduates. Also, the problem set at the end of each chapter usually does a good job at covering most of the important items.
Note: the solutions to all of the homework problems are in the back of the book. Fortunately, they are not as lazy about these proofs as they are about the other proofs.

Overall, it's a decent matrix-based linear models book with an intermediate level of rigor.

A clearly written book, sometimes lacking rigor
By A Customer
Rencher's Linear Model in Statistics provides a good overview of regression and ANOVA theory in terms of linear models. Most concepts are presented in an extremely clear format - probably more so than most theory of linear model books I've seen. Moreover, for those who haven't taken linear algebra for awhile, the book provides a nice review of the basic concepts needed for most of the proofs throughout the book. Sometimes, however, (and I'm speaking as a graduate student in statistics) some of the proofs are not as rigorous as I'd like. Sometimes assumptions are made that are neither clear intuitively nor derived specifically from previously stated (and proved) theorems. The book may be a good guide for those learning the material on their own since it contains all solutions to homework problems in the back. For the same reason, it may not be the best book for a college course.

Grat textbook on this subject
By Christian Ponce
I started reading this book from the very first page, and when I got to the third chapter, I began to find minor mistakes in formulas, like (y-\mu') instead of (y-\mu)' (i.e., transpose is in the wrong place), jj'jj' instead of (1/n)jj'jj' (somebody forgot to divide by "n").

Great content, but I don't give it five stars because I expect to find less mistakes in a classical book like this.

Meaning, Narrativity, and the Real: The Semiotics of Law in Legal Education IV, by Jan M. Broekman

This book examines the concept of meaning and our general understanding of reality in a legal and philosophical context. Starting from the premise that meaning is a matter of linguistic and other forms of articulation, it considers the inherent philosophical consequences. Part I presents Klages’, Derrida’s, Von Hofmannsthal’s and Wittgenstein’s explorations of silence as a source of articulation and meaning. Debates about 20thcenturypsychologismgave the attitude concept a pivotal role; it illustrates the importance of the discovery that a word is globally qualified as ‘the basic unit of language’. This is mirrored in the fact that we understand reality as a matter of particles and thus interpret the real as a component of an all-embracing ‘particle story’. Each chapter of the book focuses on an aspect of legal semiotics related to the chapter’s theme: for instance on the meaning of a Judge’s ‘Saying for Law’, on law students training in varying attitudes or on the ties between law and language.

Part II of the book illustrates our general understanding of reality as a matter of particles and partitioning, and examines texts that prove that particle thinking is basic for our meaning concept. It shows that physics, quantum theory, holism, and modern brain research focusing on human linguistic capabilities, confirm their ties to the particle story. In contrast, the book concludes that partitions and particles are neither a fact in the history of the cosmos nor a determinant of knowledge and the sciences, and that meaning is a process: a constellation rather than a fixation. This is manifest once one understands meaning as the result of continuously changing attitudes, which create our narratives on cosmos and creation. The book proposes a new key for meaning: a linguistic occurrence anchored in dimensions of human narrativity.

Be an expert on almost anything. Fun, trivial, helpful and a valuable resource as well.
By Ryan Fisher
What's What: A Visual Glossary of the Physical World is not a book one ordinarily sits down and reads, it serves more as an invaluable visual and literary resource reference.
More than just a catalog of names of everyday items, What's What can help just about anyone sound like an expert whether they're writing or speaking about a given item.
It would seem that the world is full of nearly inexhaustible items to be dissected and named from the most simplistic to the highly technical. Considering that the most recent edition of this book dates to 1994, it is fairly concise.
Granted, you won't find "every" item under the sun, but authors by Reginald Bragonier Jr. and David Fisher should be commended for compiling all that they have. Remember, even Webster didn't get all the words in the lexicon on his first or second try.
A valuable resource and a fun book to browse through once in a while.

Excellent visual reference
By A Customer
Unfortunately, this book is now out of print, but if you can find a second-hand copy somewhere, grab it. "What's What" covers pretty much the same ground as DK Publishing's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary". If you own both (and I do) you'll find that they complement each other quite nicely. "What's What" covers areas that the other book doesn't (courtrooms and prison yards, for example, are presented with labels -- very helpful if you're writing a courtroom or prison story and you want to know what the names of everything are.) Likewise, "Ultimate Visual" covers areas that "What's What" doesn't.

In short, both books are essential to writers, researchers, or anyone who just wants to know what the name of something is.

The MBA Oath: Setting a Higher Standard for Business Leaders, by Max Anderson, Peter Escher

"As a manager, my purpose is to serve the greater good by bringing people and resources together to create value that no single individual can create alone..."

So begins the MBA Oath, conceived in early 2009 by Max Anderson, Peter Escher, and a team of Harvard Business School students. They saw that in the wake of the financial crisis, the Madoff scandal, and other headlines, MBAs were being vilified. People were angry because business leaders, many of whom were MBAs, seemed not to care about anything beyond their own private interests. Many began to question the worth of business schools and the MBA degree.

The oath quickly spread beyond Harvard, becoming a worldwide movement for a new generation of leaders who care about society as well as the bottom line. Thousands of graduating MBAs have now pledged to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity, just as medical students swear by the Hippocratic oath before they can practice.

From Publishers Weekly
The authors, not long out of Harvard Business School, along with many other classmates and supporters, are proponents of the hot new idea of an "MBA oath," similar in some ways to the Hippocratic Oath, as an inspiration and accountability tool for the jungle-like business climate. Shadows of Enron and assorted villain-companies, and the dire financial situation of the current recession drive the project, which they view even at this early state as a successful effort to clothe business managers with foundational ethics and morality. Now a global movement, the eight-point oath involves promises of responsibility, growth, development, honesty, and respect for the law. The authors dissect it thoroughly, with illustrations from a variety of interesting case studies and tests. As more than 10,000 schools worldwide offer MBA degrees, the writers caution that a business school ranking is influenced by the average compensation of a graduate during his first year after school and that compensation, rather than value, has become the keystone of an education. They also note that a sixty-four-page ethics manual proved powerless in the hands of Enron management. Suggesting that managers operate at a baseline level of doing no harm, The MBA Oath is a strong call for ethical reform.

From Booklist
In 2009, a team of Harvard Business School students started an impressive movement: to transform the reputation of business, one person at a time, through the construction of and self-adherence to an MBA oath, similar to the physician's Hippocratic oath. Truth is, it's about time. The recent $50 trillion global loss in financial assets coupled with a lack of integrity and personal accountability has created a huge crisis of reputation on Wall Street—and Main Street. Two of the oath's promulgators, Max Anderson and Peter Escher, have provided thoughtful arguments for realigning the profession, with equally strongly rationales for the oath's principles. To be expected from Harvard Business School–trained professionals, they cite case after case to buttress their points, both good and bad stories, the latter including the Tylenol crisis. The authors present their arguments rationally and passionately. Who could argue with young leaders who argue that managers must “strive to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental prosperity worldwide”? --Barbara Jacobs

Review
"The MBA Oath...turns out to be a thoughtful response to the [recent] situation in which thousands of MBA students found themselves.... A generation of students went to business school to learn about business and found themselves portrayed as villains because of the misdeeds of their predecessors.... The authors draw on cases taught to Harvard MBA students to expand their view of business ethics from the narrowly legal to a wider vision of responsibility. They write meditatively about everything from ambition to leadership."
-The Financial Times

"Lawyers have their oath of attorney, and doctors have that Hippocratic one, but it struck Max Anderson. . . . that MBAs have nothing. And so he and several of his classmates created the MBA oath, a promise to 'act with utmost integrity and pursue my work in an ethical manner.' . . . These Harvard students have started an important discussion about doing the right thing in business, which is never a bad conversation to have."
-Fast Company

"In the post-Enron and post-Madoff era, the issue of ethics and corporate social responsibility has taken on greater urgency among students about to graduate. While this might easily be dismissed as a passing fancy-or simply a defensive reaction to the current business environment-business school professors say that is not the case. . . . Those graduating today, they say, are far more concerned about how corporations affect the community, the lives of its workers, and the environment."
-Leslie Wayne, The New York Times

I have been a signer but never had the chance to get the book. It is a very profound and usefull for any manager
By Denis Malaket
Ok so people are people and signing something might not change human nature, but that is not the point. The oath is about what should be. What is and how to fix it will not be done by government, by countries, by obligation, by law, by force, or by coercion. It will be done by people, or even one person.

If you believe like me that the zero sum game is always avoidable and can be transformed into something more than the sum of its parts, then sign up if you are an MBA, or buy the book, if you are a manager.

I went online to see what was said about the oath and the book before buying it and it is cinic in many cases. I am glad I did not give in to the so called realists, the zero sum gamers.

This book is a must read to all those who believe that they can make a difference, to all those who want to good for themselves as well as to others. It is not one or the other. It can be both.

If you are considering getting the book, you are probably already one of us, and think the same way ; but get it anyways, it will bring to the surface what is inside you, it will give you even more insight and direction and it will make your life and that of others a little better.

We can make a difference.

Send these Authors to Wall Street --- NOW
By Myth Man
This book could not be more timely. Someone ought to pack up a dozen copies and send them to the White House. This book carefully guides the reader through a moral inventory of what is necessary to make sound business decisions. Every CEO, business manager and business leader should have a copy of this handy reference tool front and center on his/her desk. The authors explore the difficulties of decision-making in business, the pits and follies of balancing bottom-line shareholder interests with the interests of the larger community. Had this book been written twenty years ago at Harvard Business School, we very well may have avoided some of the scandals which have rocked Wall Street in the past decade. Ultimately, the forces which shut down the economy were driven by individuals making individual decisions, one after the other. The authors explore case examples of decisions gone awry as well as decisions premised on morally sound reasoning. This book is probably THE book on the market today if one is interested in raising the bar for ethical standards in business. I have read every page of this book. Though the authors are humble and do not pretend that this book answers all questions, they have clearly staked out the boundaries of the discussion which every conscientious and thinking business person should be engaged in these days. Will swearing an oath similar to the Hippocratic Oath make much of a difference on Wall Street? If it causes even one CEO to stop twice and think before proceeding with a dangerous and foolish gambit (can you say derivatives?), the Oath is worth more than a fortune. Naive cynicism is not an answer to the Wall Street debacle. Managers and owners must take overt public steps to restore confidence at the heart of our nation's economy. The Oath is minimally a first such step. This book not only gives sound advice and wisdom, it's also a darned good read with some fascinating stories. I highly recommend this book.

No Man is an Island
By K. Newcomer
I always found it interesting the MBA program does not have any standard format that each school has to follow. I finished my MBA through the University of Phoenix which had a strong focus on ethics while some schools don't really seem to address ethics. The MBA Oath is a good treatment to ethics and a solid response to some negative press the MBA program has received lately.

The book starts off with the oath which stresses integrity, managing in good faith, responsibility for your actions, and safeguarding the interests of shareholders, customers, coworkers, and society among others.

The book interestingly touches on how MBA students are taught to "juice" returns with debt. Some students take on huge debt loans with the thought process they will easily be able to pay back the loan. This easy credit behavior may have led some down a path levering up their companies or units. A good quote from Teddy Roosevelt in the book is "to educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society." Along with finance, operations, and marketing ethics needs to be part of the curriculum at all schools.

The leaders who come out of business schools like leaders of the military have a responsibility to society and to protect shareholders, society, and consumers as their decisions shape the world. The book is good for business students to understand the importance of what they are learning about. Would be great to see some case studies built into this oath to better drive home some of the ideals.
