Demanding proper marriages for all women, Martin Luther and his followers suppressed convents and cloisters as the chief institutions of womankind's sexual repression, cultural deprivation, and male clerical domination. Consent, companionship, and mutual respect became the watchwords of marriage. And because they did, genuine divorce and remarriage became possible among Christians for the first time.

"When Fathers Ruled" comes highly recommended by R. J. Rushdoony, and for good reason. (We should always take seriously the recommendations from a man who read 40,000 books in his lifetime). Steven Ozment begins this jewel of a work by informing us of the pathetic state of marriage at the dawn of the sixteenth century. Neo-Platonism* reigned supreme within the Church during the late Middle Ages (as it does today, except without the misogyny, that is, hatred of women--women were viewed then as less "spiritual" than were men, quite a contrast to Victorianism!), and this carried on past the Renaissance. Along with the neo-Platonic disdain for marriage (for "spiritual" reasons) among primarily the clergy, monks, and nuns was an equally unhealthy disdain from the lawless populace, those who preferred fornication and adultery in the local whorehouses. Not only did the Reformers have to contest neo-Platonism and its despising of the familial institution, but they also had to contest Roman Catholic marriage laws, which did more harm than good for European society. The Reformers found the allowance of "secret" marriages and the various "impediments" to marriage by the Roman Catholic Church to be most disruptive to European society, and they set about to change these laws. Reading this book is somewhat of an eye-opener if one tends to hearken back to the Reformation era with romantic notions of a near-perfect society. The Reformers, as Ozment teaches, faced much defiance during their perverse times. Ozment details many curiosities, including the "kidnapping" of nuns from convents and nunneries (Ozment calls them "cloisters") by their newly-converted, Protestant relatives. Perhaps the Reformers' best contribution to the family was the restoration of the biblical roles of husband/father and wife/mother. They attacked with equal vehemence the woman who usurped the role of her covenant head and the "lion" of a husband who terrorized his wife. Women were perhaps the largest beneficiaries of their reforms. With the help of the Reformers women began to see the convent, and its various abuses, as less than ideal, and they embraced biblical marriage instead. Prior to the Reformation some towns held eight times more cloistered women than men (this was primarily due to misogyny). Not so afterwards. Some, as previously mentioned, had to be "rescued" by loved-ones while a few escaped on their own. One thing was certain, though: there would no longer be convents and nunneries so full that many women had to be sent away for lack of room. The 1520s saw a transformation in how men viewed women. The young generation of women in the 1520s, at least in Lutheran Germany, shunned the convents and embraced covenantal marriage, arguably, unlike any time in centuries past. Ozment then goes on to detail the various marriage and divorce laws in several cities, e.g., Zurich, Basel, and Nuremberg, and their accompanying problems. He spends a whole chapter on wives' tales within the art of midwifery and early "medicine" and offers a fine chapter on child-rearing, which was then taught according to the Bible, for the most part. When Fathers Ruled represents the best historical work on the family that I've read. Ozment cites anecdotes that will make you scratch your head, laugh out loud, cringe with horror, and, perhaps, even cry. Ozment's main point of the book is this: if you want to reform the world, then you must first reform your own household. World-wide reformation will not occur as long as we fail to properly raise our children. The only deficiency of this book is that the discussion rarely extends beyond Lutheran Germany.

Neo-Platonism is characterized by an extreme exaltation of the eternal/spiritual over and against the temporal/physical. The spirit, soul, and body of man were all originally created good (as well as the created order in general), but neo-Platonists see the body and soul (even after salvific regeneration) as intrinsically inferior, if not evil (as well as the world); hence, they tend to be ascetic (self-abasers) and anti-intellectual. Moreover, neo-Platonists see man's problem as metaphysical rather than ethical. Man's not in rebellion to God; he is just trapped in an evil body. Thus, they reject biblical salvation. The telos (end) for neo-Platonists is their escape from the world (and all its responsibilities). For an excellent introduction to this idea, see R. J. Rushdoony's "The Flight From Humanity."

Ozment's _When Fathers Ruled_ deals in matters of the hearth

While most history of Reformation Europe will focus on the events in the pulpit, classroom, and council chamber, Ozment's _When Fathers Ruled_ returns to the hearthside to examine family life in the 16th century. Written in a scholarly but readable style -- and yes, the footnotes are worth examining -- Steven Ozment discusses the impact of the Reformation in the daily activities and home lives of both leader and follower in the pivotal era of the Second Millenium. Many of his observations are food for thought today, such as the impact of institutional childcare on the health (and longevity) of children in France. His quotations from popular books of the day -- the rise of which was as radical a development as the explosion of the Internet is today -- flesh out a portrait of a patriarchal society where most women may have been at home, but were most certainly not cut off from the thought and ferment of this tumultuous era. Many of the footnotes cite the original German with non-standard spelling (the correction of which was a later outgrowth of Luther's Bible and Gutenburg's press, incidentally), which either adds to their charm or frustrates the "babelfish.com" dependent.
Overall, an excellent companion to d'Aubigne's _History of the Reformation_. Four stars.

Early Protestant family life as loving and liberating for all members

Excellent historical study of marriage and family during the Reformation that combats the typical PC doctrine of university history departments ("the Reformation was oppressive to women!") by bringing German and Swiss primary source documents to bear on the subject. In doing so, Ozment shows that Reformation family life was both loving and liberating to men, women, and children. Solidly academic, but with good storytelling and a provocative thesis. Highly recommended.

Accomplishes What It Sets Out to Do

This book accomplishes what it sets out to do: establish for its reader a very basic understanding of the American Court system on both a state and federal level. However, I found the book to oversimplify many subjects, giving the excuse that "to go further into this topic would require an entire law school course". For a book that's main content barely approaches 80 pages, this sounds more like laziness on the part of the author than an honest attempt to explore the issues in a condensed format. Also, the author, under the premise of writing an objective text-book, inserts his opinion about various judicial processes in a manner I found rather subversive -- and at points even laughable; take his opinion about the contentious issue of Judges relying too heavily on support staff to generate judicial decisions:

"The best protection against inappropriate delegation of judicial authority, whether to law clerks or staff attorneys, is the conscientious dedication of each judge to his professional responsibility to understand the law and the facts in each case and to reach his own reasoned decisions" (59).

While I am no expert in the field, surely the best protection against these sorts of delegation is not just hoping for conscientious judges. Again this seems to oversimplify a complex issue in the interest of conserving space - or the author's time.

Overall, however, the book does establish a good base knowledge of the American judicial system and some of the issues that are at play in it, and with a main text only 77 pages long, it does that very efficiently.

Every American Should Own This Book

This really is a fantastic book. Professor Meador, having spent half a century as a teacher at one of the world's finest law schools and as a consultant and advisor to legal scholars and judges from state courts to the Supreme Court, manages to speak to everyone who hasn't had the opportunity to attend law school. Reading this book won't make you a lawyer, but you will understand exactly what happens in our court systems - a must for new law students, foreign lawyers and anyone interested in how their nation's legal systems work. It was an invaluable help in my first year of law school, and worth every dime.

Concise but pricey

This is a very short introduction to the U. S. court system. It is perfect as a first introduction to this subject. The author writes with great clarity, making a complex sytem approchable.

However, I expected it to be much more substantial considering the price. Small features such as including diagrams of all 50 state court systems in the Appendix rather than just four examples could easily be added and make it far more useful since every state's is different. Since lawyers need to pass bar exams on the particulars of their state further information would be far more useful.

This is a short book and the skills of the author allow for part of this, however it is far too concise for the price (even used)!

An excellent textbook on discrete mathematics

As the authors explain, discrete mathematics is supposed to be mathematics that uses only arithmetic and algebra but does not involve calculus. That gives the authors plenty of flexibility in choosing their topics. And I'll concede that the material on "propositional calculus" in Chapter Five does not involve "calculus." You can understand this book without having gone past high school algebra.

These authors have the right idea when they say "an undergraduate mathematics textbook should teach the student to solve problems." This text sure does! And they even advise their students to start by trying the homework problems before reading the text and read it only when they get stuck! Of course, I think many students do that in the first place.

A very good feature of this text is that it has over 600 figures and tables. We see Venn diagrams, Hasse diagrams, tree diagrams, graphs, flowcharts, state diagrams, and much more.

I liked the part on graph theory, including the "Hungarian Algorithm" to solve the matching problem. And there is a good chapter on Boolean Algebra, and the use of Karnaugh maps. After that is an excellent section on finite state machines and Turing machines, which is followed by a chapter on formal languages. And there's plenty about mathemtical games. The whole book is enjoyable, and I think it would be plenty of fun to teach from it or learn from it.

Exhausting textbook.

I used this book for the course "Computer Science 202a: Mathematical Tools for Computer Science," at Yale University in the fall semester of 1991 - 92, which I audited. This was a required course in mathematical foundations for the computer science major.

I didn't like this book. While extremely thorough, it goes to an extreme. Some of the exercises, especially in the chapter on Discrete Probability Theory, were extremely long-winded, and took many hours and pages to solve. My writing hand eventually got tired from writing page after page after page for some of the exercises, and I once wound up with a severe headache during that course. While this textbook definitely teaches the student to "solve problems," it does so by exhausting the student.

The problem with the book's approach of urging students to "start by trying the homework problems before reading the text, and read it only when they get stuck" is that this approach does not help to build self-confidence for students who do not already have a flair for this material, yet the textbook is used in introductory courses for non-mathematics (e.g., computer science) majors. At this level, many students who many be proficient in other topics (e.g., programming) may just be getting their feet wet in this material.

It does not make sense to use this approach to help build self-confidence in an introductory discrete mathematics course for non-mathematics majors. My professor once conducted an in-class poll of how much time the students were spending on each weekly homework assignment using this textbook, and the average was about twenty hours. (This finding caused the professor to revise the homework policy from long problem sets to weekly examinations [which was even worse for students with examination phobia].)

My view is that many of the problems could have been designed to take less time each, while preserving the required ingenuity. There were simply too many steps required to complete many of the problems. In my opinion, this aspect was especially true of the chapter on Discrete Probability Theory.

The chapter on Graph Theory was fun, though, and the Venn diagrams were lucid. Also, the chapter on Propositional Calculus was relatively reasonable in difficulty, as well as being interesting. The chapters on Number Theory and Mathematical Games were interesting as well.

In particular, I felt that the chapter on Mathematical Games, which was independent of the other chapters, should have been placed earlier. That chapter, unlike some of the others, was relatively light and interesting, and would have helped to build self-confidence for students before they tackled some of the more serious material.

In sum, this textbook has a "tackle first, read later" approach toward learning, which is not always conducive toward building self-confidence: Its approach is like teaching one to swim by throwing one into a pool and seeing how close one gets to drowning before lending a minimalist hand. If you read it, you'll definitely learn how to solve problems extremely well, but you may not preserve your sanity. It is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant.

Excellent for self learners. Better than contemporary texts. Nice applications

This is an excellent textbook for self learners or anyone else who wants to learn the subject. The prerequisites are low, only high school algebra, but the coverage is thorough. The answers to the odd numbered problems are fairly detailed, many are outline solutions rather than just final answers. It is not as theoretical as Rosen, but has lots of nice applications. The authors philosophy is learning by doing. If you are willing to work lots of problems in this text, you will be just as well prepared as some one who studyied from a more advanced book.

Hearing helps us stay vigilant and monitor our surroundings. Horowitz contemplates the difficulty in defining music and how it influences the mind. He highlights the power of acoustics by invoking our usual reaction to the noise of fingernails scraping across a blackboard, the employment of echolocation by bats, and the love songs of frogs. He defuses the hype of sound-based weaponry that dates back to Joshua and his hundreds of warriors who blew on rams’ horns and shouted in unison to collapse the walls of Jericho. It must be myth or miracle, since physics alone cannot explain the magnitude of such a sonic blast. The science of sound is fascinating, and Horowitz is an author worth listening to. --Tony Miksanek

Sounding Off

Sound is all around us. Its meanings and contradictions shape our emotional responses. We have a hamburger franchise named after sound (Sonic) and we can supersize sound (Supersonic). Professor Seth S. Horowitz (aka Dr. Evil - a nickname he earned when he mounted a laser pack on the back of a brown bat) tries to explain the mysteries of sound in his neat first book, The Universal Sense. He begins with questions about the mysteries of sound, like "What is it about fingernails on chalkboard that makes us cringe?" Everyone who reads this book will likely add their own gnawing sound mystery. Mine is this: why is the sound coming from my iPad stronger when the device is fully cloaked in its iHome leather (more likely faux leather) bound casing, than when the device is taken out of its encasement and free to blare to the rooftops? A sound mystery.

Sound is technical as well as emotional, and we live in a world fascinated by big sexy words having to do with sound. The author uses one of these terms early, "amplitude modulation", our daily media is chock full of others, some of which have surfaced with the release of the new iPhone 5. Newspapers were running stories about "Circuit Switchback" the process by which consumers using 4G LTE networks will be switched back to 3G when they use applications involving voice and data, because 4G LTE can't yet handle simultaneous voice and data transmissions, but 3G can.

But if Professor Horowitz's book was just about fancy sound terms, it would probably be dull and listless: This is your brain listening to Metallica; this is your brain listening to the sea. Instead the author begins the other way - with sound itself. He brings a sound to our ears and describes how we are changed by it.

In spite of the complexities of audio terminology, the book is full of simple truths: there are many blind animals, but none that can't hear. Sound is relative - to a bat, the 80 decibel sound of a florescent light bulb is maddening; true silence doesn't exist because wherever there is vibration, there is sound.

For all its factual content, this is a work of the imagination - it takes imagination to describe how the Earth might have sounded during its development phase; how the first planetary rains might have sounded, or how the first cilia may have sounded - anchored and waving on algae as they were. The author creates an improbable galaxy of undersea creatures sounding off - choruses of snapping shrimp, the violin sounds of lobsters, and most endearingly, farting herring. His work on the behavior of bullfrogs and bats will make you rethink everything you've learned about them.

Music, quite naturally, occupies a key space in the book as do speculations on probable outcomes for ongoing acoustic research. One book can't by itself cover everything in such a vast subject as sound, but it would have been interesting to hear what innovations and discoveries in sound companies like Cirrus Logic are making. All in all, it sounds like fascinating reading and it is.

A very informative yet easy to read book

There is a perfect balance between humor and technical information in the book. It is kind of like having just enough sugar on your breakfast cereal so that you are not eating it just because it is good for you. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Turn it up to 11

Great book. Tackles sound from many and fascinating angles -- the shock waves of asteroids slamming into the young Earth; how Darth Vader's theme music drives the narrative of Star Wars; bacteria, frogs and bats. Mixes hard science and data with just the right touches of pop culture, humor and personal anecdote. This not a manuscript lowered down from an ivory tower. The author gets his hands dirty, and the book and readers benefit.
