If only I found a book that would teach me everything I needed in few hours, or a day or two.A book that instills the required confidence to start coding immediately

Highly recommended

I really do like this book. It's quite small but covers a lot on Java 8 Lambdas, Interfaces, Functions, Streams and Parallel processing. I like that the author explains these features simply and concisely, covering how to use each as well as why they are used and the benefits of each. There are plenty of code examples to aid understanding. I do think the prose could be improved though to flow better. I would have knocked off a half star if I could have but this didn't warrant a full star off. It's a good book to get up to speed quickly and I highly recommend it.

Good book written in easy language to understand

As the author mentioned, this book is for you if you have to get quick overview of Lambda Expressions in Java 8 over the weekend. You have to be an experienced Java developer to understand the concepts. This book has examples and snippets of code that would give an overview of changes to Java 8 APIs due to introduction of Lambdas. It also gives an exposure to functional programming. I recommended the book to Java developers who work for me to read so that they can be up to date with the changes in Java 8.

You see every twist and turn coming from a mile away

Grace, a voluptuous beauty with a Ph.D., is overextended from caring for her mother and working long hours at a museum. She decides to visit her friend Julia in Italy to relax. Grace hasn't found relationships to be particularly thrilling, so she doesn't understand all the fuss when she arrives to find Julia trying to trap her latest conquest into marriage. All of that changes when handsome Matteo shows up at the apartment. He instantly recognizes the sparks between them but Grace refuses to betray her friend by dating him--especially after Julia informs her that she's carrying his child. What's worse, because Matteo is rich Julia has no intention of telling him about the baby until it's too late to end the pregnancy, thinking it will force him into marriage. Grace promises to keep the secret but is drawn to Matteo and eventually reveals her feelings to him. However, she still refuses to believe him when he says that he has has been trying for months to convince Julia that what was really only a casual affair is over. When the women are invited to Matteo's family estate, things boil over. Matteo's love for Grace is so apparent that Julia finally plays her trump card and reveals her pregnancy to a horrified Matteo. Grace knows this is the end for them and quietly slips out of Italy. Matteo soon tracks her down at her apartment, but only to apologize and confirm that he's marrying Julia. Grace returns to work and is devastated when Julia turns up at the museum to show off her expensive ring. Will Matteo follow through on his marriage plans or will he listen to his heart? The answer is, of course, predictable but unfortunately so is the reason. Julia was such an obviously selfish, manipulative person that I couldn't understand why Grace was so devoted to her. Plus, it was uncomfortable to have Grace jump into a relationship with a man who had just jumped out of bed with her close friend. This book just didn't feel right.

The Baby Gambit Slows to a Halt...

The Baby Gambit seems an interesting enough book however it loses steam in the first chapter. The wonderfully beautifully Grace with a doctorate in art history can't even recognize her own beauty much less the fact that her best friend Julia is a gold-digger.
Matteo di Falco is presented as the ultimate Italian hunk. He is suave, sophisticated and wealthy. So why does he allow himself to be maniputlated by Grace's best friend?
The story lacks realism. Grace chooses not to involve herself with her friend's lover especially when she believes Julia is pregnant with Matteo's child. Matteo di Falco allows himself to be manipulated by a woman who is both shallow and selfish. Matteo is too weak to be considered an acceptable hero especially since he is determined to have a relationship with Grace without adequately explaining the relationship he has with Julia. The story rambles and slowly drags the reader to the end.

Meh! Didn't leave me with that warm fuzzy feeling...

This is one of those romance novels that reminds me of why I usually avoid romance novels and instead read meatier fare. Grace is just too self-obsessed with her good looks being a detriment to her own happiness, while Matteo's intense attraction to her while still entangled with her friend is implausible. Matteo knew Julia had a thing for him (gold digger or not) and should not have been using her as a vehicle to get to know Grace better, and Grace should have had more backbone. With his immense wealth, he should have extricated himself from the friend, given it a brief period of time, and then manufactured a bunch of excuses to go visit her museum or buy artwork for it or something to woo her once he was 'clear' of the gold digging girlfriend. A waste of my time.

About the Author

Bruce Wingerd is a member of the Biology Department at National University in San Diego, California. Previously, he has held teaching/administrative positions at Edison State College (now called Florida Southwestern), Broward College, and San Diego State University. His degrees are in the fields of zoology and physiology, and he has taught courses in medical terminology, human anatomy, advanced human anatomy, and anatomy and physiology for more than 30 years. He has written numerous textbooks, lab manuals, and multimedia learning resources in medical terminology, human anatomy, anatomy and physiology, histology, and comparative mammalian anatomy. His goal in teaching and writing is to provide students with learning tools that will help them reach their potential through education. He enjoys counseling students in the health sciences, developing novel approaches to teaching and learning, and leading faculty in the drive for excellence in education.

Great book, but you can get the book with a Pearson code for only $25 more.

Does NOT have the Pearson Code. Just so you know. I had to buy it separate and it cost me another $70. I thought where the both ISBN #'s were there, it would have both. Had I read the entire description, I would've known.

Good for class, bad for reference book.

Chances are if you are getting this textbook its because a class required it as a textbook. I've used other medical terminology books in the past and I've had much better experiences with them. While most books are typically the same, the way the information is organized differs.

Overall, you will learn the word roots, prefixes, and suffixes just like you would using most other books. I have two main issue with this book.

The way the material is organized is in a tabled format, with the medical term on the left in a box and a description/definition on the right in a box. There is nothing wrong with this and I actually liked how straight forward it was. My issue was the fact that many of the description boxes had the medical term bolded within it, so that means you cannot cover up the medical term to the left and practice reading the definition and recalling the term because its staring right back at you. You would have to make flashcards and rewrite every medical word with every single definition, so that you can practice reading the definition. This is very time consuming and annoying, and could easily be fixed by reorganizing the way the description/definition box is written.

Secondly, each chapter is essentially divided up into three sections: signs and symptoms, disease and disorders, and treatments. The book has practice questions after each of these individual sections before a full chapter review. My question is why are only some of the words tested? We are expected to learn all of the medical terms and become fluent in them, yet many of them do not have some form of practice questions to reinforce them. It would be very nice to see review questions on each medical term we worked hard to learn.

So if you need this for your class, you have no other option. If you're looking to look medical terminology on your own, seek another textbook.

Evolutionary Theory and Literary History

In the striking final chapter of this book, and further developed in several essays since, Franco Moretti proposes a theory of literary evolution inspired by Charles Darwin. As is well known, Darwin's theory of `natural selection' has two key components: first, it postulates that change is random, more prone to failure than to success, and not the unfolding of a teleological process progressing towards some final form of perfection (humans are not more perfect than the humanoids they evolved from); second, it postulates that only those changes which give the creature a reproductive advantage in a given set of external conditions survive (survival of the fittest means survival of the fastest reproducer). Adapting this to the needs of literary history, Moretti renders `natural selection' as follows: (1) aesthetic variation is the product of chance; and (2) the literary marketplace determines which formal variations survive. In later works, Moretti brings in `world-systems' theory to account for the peculiarities of the market, thus departing from his initial quite strict focus on Darwin, but nevertheless maintains the original evolutionary model conceived here. The other striking piece in this work is the essay on Dracula and Frankenstein -- Moretti argues quite brilliantly that these novels reflect two different perspectives on apital -- that of owners and that of employers.

Being an Unlimited member I got to read each story for free; then I bought the Trilogy to honor the authors efforts!

For as short and steamy as this trilogy was, the story was surprisingly well developed. It was fun to follow Jason as he discovers the truth about his past and the author made it easy to empathize with our hero. If this was a wine I'd guess I describe it as a wonderfully dark, full bodied shifter vintage aged with smoke from embers and lust.

This was a 3 interesting short stories. They were hot and steamy. I did sympathize with Jason and I'm happy he could avenge his father. There were some editing mistakes but it wasn't so bad.

Or, they can do as authors Leo Hopf and Bill Welter recommend - rethink, reinvent, and reposition their business.

Business renewal is an exceedingly important topic these days. The economic upheaval we've experienced in recent years has made it nearly impossible for companies to coast. Strategic bumbling can no longer be masked by perpetually rosy conditions. The consequences of tactical miscalculations are magnified tenfold. As a result, many companies are faced with an unfamiliar situation: sink or swim. For companies in that situation, this book can really help.

Hopf and Welter provide step by step instructions for guiding a management team through the business renewal process. They address the big strategic questions as well as delve into the real life tactical issues that are bound to crop up in any project of organizational change. The authors present 12 distinct renewal strategies, each shaped to address a particular set of organizational conditions. There really is something in this book for everyone.

Here are some things I really liked about the book. First, it's written in plain English. Third, the recommendations are pragmatic, sensible, intuitive and above all implementable - far from ivory tower philosophizing, this is advice you can use today, right now.

I've known Bill Welter for some time now. The breadth of his business experience in the trenches is incredible, and he is one of the clearest thinkers I've ever met. He and Leo Hopf have put their experience and knowledge to good use by bringing this book to market. Today companies need to break new ground, they have to get out of their rut. That kind of thing isn't easy: management teams will get a lot of help here, all in less than 250 pages.

Taking charge of your challenges

Rethink, reinvent and reposition is a solid book to help the reader move from reacting to challenges to taking a proactive yet thoughtful approach. It provides concepts that can practically be applied, used in any industry, and help one truly reinvent their thinking and their business. It's attention to the key stakeholders that must help carry out change is notable. I recommend the book to managers in small, midsize and large organizations. The principles and examples will help one see and stay "the way".

A 'must' read book for any business leader

Rethink Reinvent Reposition authored by Leo Hopf and William Welter is a remarkable book because they show us strategies how to grow new business and offers a link to the life cycle of business. The publication of this book is very timely during the current recession. The authors give us 12 strategies for organizational renewal. This is followed by the section on "Rethink" with a development of a short list of renewal candidates and the commitment to the reinvention effort. "Reinvent" is the second segment and discusses the structure of the reinvention phase, coming to grips with the 12 renewal strategies, and the decision on the best renewal alternatives. The third and last part is "Reposition" and offers the transition to new business model and avoidance to traps. The last chapter discusses the building renewal capabilities in the next generation of leaders. The authors discuss many case studies from major corporations including Apple Computer, Samsung, Kodak, Nintendo and Warner Brothers. The one I enjoy most is on Milt & Edie's Dry Cleaners in Burbank, California. This dry cleaner is open twenty four hours a day, and seven days a week. They have a spacious parking lot, with a koi pond and playing music. Customers smell complimentary popcorn and cookies as they enter and are greeted, if known, by name. They are directed to one of nine fully staffed counters. Each piece of clothing is inspected as it is cleaned and any repair (loose button or torn pocket) will be done by one of seven tailors. When the clothing is picked up, the customer is informed of the repair and asks if you choose to pay for it. This is an excellent demonstration how to grow a business like dry cleaning. This is a "must" read book for any business leader.

Part 1: Know Yourself
This part will focus on self-awareness and how the individuals learned to become aware of their needs and to set goals for themselves. We will also look at the families’ sufferings and challenges and how their crises helped them focus on developing their individual characters and become better people.
The most successful people are self-aware—they know their strengths and their weaknesses. They have written goals and they periodically evaluate them, amend them and revise them. We will also define real happiness and set up the model for working to achieve it. You will learn to go out and make happiness happen, rather than being passive and waiting for happiness to come to you.

Part 2: Like Yourself
We will see how our three families experience their frenetic lives—always on the go. They are active people, and we will watch how they learned to slow down and get comfortable spending time with themselves. We will see how they get in touch with their thoughts, core values, belief systems and character traits. Once they become aware of their strengths and learn to value them, we will see how they begin to like those attributes--and themselves.

Part 3: Be Yourself
Once our individuals learn to like themselves, they began to interact with others and the world in a healthy way. We will see how they learn to let go of resentments and manipulations. They learn how to be emotionally present in conversations and emotionally supportive of others. They learn how to become other-centered instead of self-centered. They learn to grow from life’s challenges and became more refined in character. They find meaning in their lives and become fulfilled and contented. We will watch them awaken from unconscious lethargy and autopilot lives and learn the art of self motivation. They will become less self-absorbed and more giving. They will take back control of their lives and create an inner contentment and sense of fulfillment. This is the work of making happiness into a verb.

The Characters in the Book:
Let’s meet three families who have learned the art of looking below the surface at the challenges of their lives. They have learned to delve into their internal systems—their psyche, their emotional selves and their souls, and have learned to reframe the challenge as an opportunity for personal growth.

Allison
Allison is a thirty-two year old woman who runs her own business teaching English as a second language to immigrants. Allison is divorced and has two children, Amy 8, and Greg, 6, trying to juggle her career, her family and dating. She would like to find a real man who is responsible and who knows how to deal with real life. Bottom line is, she is lonely and is starting to sink into a depression—which she can ill afford to do with having to support two children financially and emotionally.

Zack and Hope
Zack and Hope have been married for ten years and have three children. They were not connecting emotionally. At the office, Zack began an affair. . Hope became aware of the affair and was deeply hurt. Zack stopped the affair, and changed jobs, in order to help save the marriage. Hope, however, was too hurt to re-engage with Zack. She is trying to work through the issues in individual and marriage therapy.

Rick
Rick is a thirty-year-old marketing executive who is married and likes to hang out with the boys playing poker and having a few drinks at the bar. He comes from a broken home where he was physically and emotionally abused by an alcoholic father. He suffers from depression, chronic back pain and low self- esteem. He has turned to painkillers for relief and has become addicted to Percocet. He says he can deal with it “his way” and anyway, “there is no problem”.

Yisroel Roll gets the point across to the vast audience. I like the fact that everyone can relate to his writing. The married housewife, the corporate CEO and the confused bachelor. This book is as helpful as it is entertaining. Thank you for always hitting the nail on the head. I highly recommend this book!!

This book is absolutely worth reading for those trying to build a happier life. I finished reading this uplifting book smiling :) Happiness is a verb is unique in that it provides a step by step process to create happiness. The happiness tips dispersed throughout the book are invaluable and highlight an approach to working through life’s challenges. The vivid examples of families described in this book make it easy to remember practical techniques that can be applied to the reader’s life.

About the Author
Heather Holleman teaches composition classes at Penn State. Dr. Holleman earned the Moscow Prize for Excellence in Teaching Composition and Rackham’s Most Outstanding Graduate Instructor Award while at the University of Michigan. She also served as a Sweetland Fellow in the University of Michigan Writing Center. At Penn State, Dr. Holleman directed the Excellence in Communication Certificate Program for the College of Liberal Arts while providing leadership and training for the Advanced Writing instructors.

Learning to write with flair

This is, by far, the best grammar book I have ever read/used. However, this is much more than a grammar book; this book teaches you how to write, speak and think more fluidly and intelligently. Using this book, you learn how to use those skills naturally to make yourself more presentable to everyone around you: readers, interviewers, friends, family. Dr. Holleman takes a boring (often long-winded) subject and coverts it into a succinct, fun and interesting book that you can't put down (even though it's about grammar). The analogies used are easy to understand and apply. Her stories, quotes, pictures and text variation grasp your attention and don't let go. However, the best part of this book is Dr. Holleman's list of analysis verbs that will, with the help of the rest of her shared knowledge, transform any spoken or written word into a piece of art. Don't hesitate to buy this book! You will not regret it!

This book is definitely the most helpful, colorful, and engaging grammar book I have ever used! As a student, it has made an immeasurable impact on my writing. After using the book for one semester, I noticed a substantial improvement in my writing; what would have been monotonous papers were instead delightful pieces of flair, sprinkled with analysis verbs and punctuation marks. Like a chef props his or her favorite recipe book on the counter by the oven or stove, I would place "How to Write with Flair" on my desk right next to my computer, and would refer to the book constantly as I wrote. And, what a difference! This book is one to cherish!

The perfect ending to a perfect love story

I simply loved The Edge of Always. I was truly satisfied with the end of The Edge of Never but am glad that J.A. Redmerski gave us more Andrew and Camryn.

This sequel is clearly Andrew's story although there are alternating POV's throughtout. I loved getting more of their story even though they are dealt some more heartbreak.

But in the end this is the story of a beautiful, almost perfect love. Andrew Parrish has remained one of my top 5 bbf's for a reason. He lets Camryn be Camryn. No matter what, he is by her side and supports her 100%. And it's never a sappy kind of devotion. It's the kind of devotion that lasts a lifetime, that makes you know that this will be the couple that lives to their 80's or beyond and die within hours of each other because they simply cannot live without each other.

I really enjoyed getting an update about Natalie and Aidan and Asher and getting that glimpse into the future seeing how they all continue their lives.

Andrew and Camyrn's road trip was yet another great journey and I'm so glad to have been able to read about it.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It was the perfect continuation of a love just so incredible.

Its not the Edge of Never, 3.5 stars

Im having a hard time with what to rate this book although it wasn't horrible it wasn't great either. I wish we could do half stars on our rating, I would give this a 3.5. First off I love Andrew and Camryn for that reason alone I would give it high marks. However this book fell flat for me especially with the anticipation of it. It started off really slow and I was hoping it would pick up. It seemed like it was headed that way then it just sort of droned on and on. Also the road trips was just long and boring except for one really bad incident. Which I just thought was not really needed. There were definitely some memorable parts and great interactions between Andrew and Camryn, and Andrew was as yummy as always. I really wished it was a little steamier and just had more of something.... Small ****spoiler alert**** I also did not find the whole having to live free and on the move all the time very realistic. I love that they are both free spirits but it drove me crazy that they kept alluding to the fact that those who make a home in one spot have something wrong with them and are destined for unhappiness. Ultimately the book was more about Camryn and her feelings and what she was/is going through. I love Andrew and I love the way he loves Camryn and wants to give her the world, but it was like he never got to grieve over the miscarriage or even reflect on the fact that he almost died.

This one's hard to write. I truly liked and enjoyed a lot of this story, but felt a little like bits & pieces throughout, and then the end petered out. Or something. The story stays true to the Andrew & Camryn I fell in love with in The Edge of Never, for the most part. Andrew Parrish has to be the most supportive dude in book history. I mostly like Camryn, but she can be trying sometimes! I can't place my finger on any one example of why I feel that way about her, tho! Part of this storyline is SUPER sad, but the journey is great! And it was a lot of fun going on Cam & Andrew's latest adventures with them! : ) But then, the end... Okay, so, some of the adventure-time felt too drawn out, and then the last few chapters felt a bit too "fast forward wrap up." I like where JAR was going w/ the last few chapters & epilogue - EXCELLENT idea there. Just wasn't quite so fussed about the execution of that excellent idea.

Still, this was enjoyable & if you want more Cam & Andrew after the SUPERB Edge of Never, then I definitely think you should give this a read.
